First, I had to wait over 15 minutes while the clerk made mistakes and "chatted" registering a walk-in. Second, the first room I was registered in already had an occupant, who was in bed, when I walked partway into the room!! Disconcerting, to say the least. I almost left then, but it was getting late, and I had traveled 750 miles that day. Third, the carpet was dirty, especially along the baseboards, to the extent I didn't want to walk on it in bare feet, or even my stocking feet for that matter! Fourth, a little thing, but the room had 1 cup in a double-occupancy room. Fifth, towels were threadbare and gray from overuse (made me wish I had my own towels). Sixth, plumbing fittings, like the showerhead, were badly corroded. Seventh, one electrical outlet had a six-plug converter in it with everything plugged into it (microwave, small refrigerator, alarm clock, etc.). Eighth, wannabe "gangsta" punks with backward caps and baggy clothes hung around in the parking lot smoking--I wasn't sure I wanted to leave my car there overnight.
