Staff on reception were very very friendly - and happy to help out with enquiries such as directions/booking taxis etc. It was nice to see that the hostel put on events in the evenings and I think I would have taken advantage of this had I been travelling alone. Breakfast was quite varied and it was good to have so many options (although there weren't really enough staff to manage the volume of guests at breakfast - eg. Had to wait 5mins for mugs/no coffee available). If we had paid half the price I would have found 40 Berkeley just about bearable - but this is Boston, and therefore value for money regarding accommodation doesn't seem to exist. I have stayed in many budget/backpacker places over the past 16 years, and this was one of the worst. The hostel also seems to operate as a residence for elderly ladies who have fallen on hard times - great that they are doing this valuable and necessary work, but gave the hostel an extremely depressing air. I recognise the limitations of working in an old building etc - but the bathroom facilities were very poor. 2 showers/3 toilets were just about clean enough to use (if you could ignore the poo/menstruation blood smeared on the walls)! - but shared between far too many people and with men always walking into ladies bathroom by accident etc I think some people would feel unsafe. Rooms had no air conditioning, though to be fair this was noted when we booked - if you want the window open the noise from the street/communal garden causes problems for light sleepers. Room extremely basic - bed/wardrobe/ceiling fan/chest of drawers/1 towel for both of us (sure reception would have been happy to provide another one had we asked though!) The bed linen was clean, as was the floor area - but underneath the bed was another story. 40 Berkely will undoubtedly continue to do well, as accommodation in Boston is so expensive that it's really one of the few affordable places there....though if you want more than a bed and a shower in the morning you'd do well to spend the extra money to have somewhere that you looked forward to returning to after a busy day of sightseeing. Probably an ok option if you're backpacking alone and looking to meet other young travellers, but definitely wouldn't recommend for anyone who wants a bit more comfort.

I liked that there were so many different kinds of people from all over the world there in just one small building and that they all were very nice. Well, except for that creepy old guy who asked me to make out with him. He was too nice hahaha. Other than that I loved it there. Ran out of coffee at breakfast.

Cozy, perfect location for our trip, and affordable. It had all we needed: a bed for two. The staff was great too, however. Very sweet, endearing, and helpful. Breakfast was included in the price and was also quite nice. REALLY cute New Year's Eve party! Somewhat cramped room - The entertainment system set up was kind of in the way and useless. (Empty; No tv, just sitting in the room taking up space.) The Shared Bathroom was not really to my liking, though I dealt with it. I like having a personal shower, and the set up in the bathroom was a bit strange. No doors on the stalls and unisex; Could cause some uncomfortable moments. We got lucky and never had anyone else in there when we were, though.

The only good thing about staying in the 40 Berkeley was its location to the centre of Boston. Everything was well within walking distance! The cost - it was not value for money, I have stayed in much better accm for much much less. The rooms - dated, not comfortable and certainly not clean. The ablutions - dirty and dated. The food/kitchen - not appetising and dirty looking. We walked in and walked straight out again and chose to take our breakfast down town instead of using this facility! There are clearly people accommodated within this hostel that are there for a prolonged period of time and are housed there by the local government.

The lobby is spacious & you can get your own free coffee in the pantry corner. The complimentary breakfast is great-bacon, sausage, eggs, cereal, juices etc. There is free wi-fi too. Really need to increase the number of toilets & showers. 2 each for the entire floor is not enough! The automatic flushing toilet flushing system is weird; they should also come with a manual option! Need another person to backup the front desk. I waited 20 mins to collect my bags while an employee was tied up with 3 guests waiting to check-in. One employee is engaged on the phone; not sure if it's work related since he didnt mutter a sound! He also plainly ignored all the guests queuing at the front desk; not even acknowledging our presence! That better be a labor-intensive and important call! Lastly, the lifts made clicking noises & is too slow to service the number of people at the hostel! A lift upgrade is necessary!

Good location. I suppose Boston is just a pricey place for hotels, but for this price I would've expected something a little nicer. If you're trying to save money I'm sure you could find a hostel for much cheaper.

The staff were quite friendly and there was quite a community feel in the areas. The breakfast was really nice - well cooked and very well attended by the other residents. The rooms are very basic with just bed, wardrobe and very basic facilities. Not ensuite, and the ladies toilet and bathroom was quite a way from the room. In comparison to other hostels that we stayed at in the USA, this was amongst the most basic and not good value for the money spent.

Good location, walking distance to everything. Everything is clean enough. Some of the rooms are rather nice and comfortable. The breakfast is really awesome! No electric sockets in the room, which is really uncomfortable. Also some rooms are pretty small.
