Staff Room Location
Wifi was only availeble in the backroom.
The crew ! Always totally dedicated and easy-going personalities. The intimate courtyard setting and proximity to everything in Santa Monica.
Breakfast does not deserve it's name. It's a plastic wrapped bagel thnat one has to stand in line waiting to have toasted at the one and only bread toaster in the receptionhall every morning. (- Buy one or two more toasters, for heavens sake !!) Cleaning of rooms missed two full days which was blamed on a power outage one night. But that does not excuse waste baskets not to be emptied for 2 days and in one of our rooms (we had 2) we had no towels at all when room service finally attended. wifi very erratic. Clearly the hotel lives on it's charm and that of it's crew. But too many technicalities out of order to really be acceptable for a 3 star hotel, - cooking plates not functioning, safes niether etc. - And floors in bad need of grinding and oiling as they look filthy. - Having said all this, we might consider returning, but are then hoping to see improvements.
Price for location, felt like a friend's home rather than hotel, reminded me of Beach Boys with surfer and Hollywood decor, close parking at night.
Noisy location of my corner room, not insulated from outside noise, cold coffee in morning, but overall would stay there again because of great location and price.
Location is Good.
TV - Not working Shower- over 100 years old and no hot water. Bath. Towels are ripped and have holes in them. Dirty rooms (Cob webs, hair everywhere)
Here you don't have that feeling of dealing with 'automatic machines' as in most hotels. Staff is friendly and slightly non-professional.
Katie was extremely helpful and friendly. Charming older property. Easy walk to beach and pier. Good restaurants within walking distance. Clean and quiet. We had the Mermaid room.
Wifi only worked when we sat outside. Parking was so stressful, my niece wouldn't leave once we got a spot. So, we only saw what we walked to.
Perfect location. Friendly staff.
Very, very nice and friendly staff! Differently from the other hotels where the staffs always answer you in formal words, hotel California makes you feel like home. We met two guys on the counter, DJ (or JD? so sorry I forget your name) likes Chinese singer Wang Fei and showed us his picture with Gong Li :) It is really very warm and kind of him. The younger guy (Sorry again I also forget your name...) is also very friendly and help us a lot. The room is not that kind of standard hotel rooms, pictures and other interesting things on the wall make it so special. Chairs just in front of every door so you can easily go and sit there having coffee or smoke (without interfering the others). The location is very good, just one minute walking to the beach and no more than 5 minutes walking to the 3rd street. And, the price is lovely, its totally worth this price! Next time I visit Santa Monica, definitely I will again choose this hotel!
In some rooms the wifi signal is not that strong, anyway its not a big problem. We come to Santa Monica to enjoy the beach, but not coming here to play online games in the hotel room :)
Next to the Santa Monica Pier, across from the famous Chez Jay ( a dive par excellence) and just steps from the beach. The junior suite had three separate sleeping areas, awesome high thread count sheets and comfy pillows. Shower was nice, too. Spotless and stylish. Breakfast is only bagels, but they are proper ones (even everything bagels) and they have a slicer and a toaster. Orange juice was concentrate, though. Tip: Park across the street at the lot that is behind Chez Jay's -- it's one third of the hotel parking cost.
The WiFi was pretty much non existent, but I have a hot spot on my phone so I didn't care. The thermostat didn't work (only a little chill in the SoCal air) but the desk clerk brought us a nice heater and some yummy blankets.
Stayed here because we 'could'! Staff couldn't have been more helpful! Loved the surfboard headboard on the bed! Loved walking to the beach and pier (great dining on the pier!) Incredible value for money in the area...
Minor points - Rooms were a little 'crowded' and not noise proof... Brekky is more of a 'grab-n-go' in the foyer at checkin ...
Front desk staff Location Reasonable value for locality Bike hire from SM Pier
Parking - a nightmare in SM. Drove round for over 30 mins and found nothing. A space eventually opened up on the limited parking space at the Hotel California.
The California feel of the place. Location was brilliant. Staff were very friendly and most helpful.
The position was fabulous. The hotel had charm and a bit funky. It was very relaxed...
The parking was very limited, but worked out ok for us and the wifi was pretty bad.
Hotel location near restaurants and shopping and accross Santa Monica Pier. Very charming place overall and friendly staff. I would come back.
paying 36.00 USD for 1 night stay, Location of my room near stairway and traffic noise could have been avoided as the reservation was made way in advance. Breakfast should be served in a separate room to accomodate the guests, not in the front desk area where people check out. too crowded in the morning.
Location location location was excellent
Location was great!
I've stayed here a number of times and this latest visit was the most enjoyable as they've really updated the rooms. Beds were very comfortable - in fact my junior suite had two rooms with beds in each one. Worked for me as I invited some friends to stay with me. If you want to be close to the beach, Main Street and downtown Santa Monica, but don't need one of the premium hotels, this is the spot!
Location, friendly staff, comfortable bed, free breakfast.... everything really!
The proximity to the beach. The funkiness of the hotel. It reminded me of how Santa Monica and the Southern CA beach area looked decades ago. With a big, fancy hotel next door I appreciated the simplicity of this hotel.
Could have used a few updates.
loaction is good. hotel is at Santa monica. it close to santa monica pier. nice staf. nice breakfast.
wifi is bad.
Location couldn't be better and friendly staff - thought good value and loved the fact that its a one-off
Breakfast was hit and miss - sometimes available sometimes not. Ordering enough in advance cannot be that difficult and let the hotel down as price didn't alter.
Bed was cozy, the location was amazing! The staff was very friendly, had a great time!
The hotel was slightly outdated, and not the cleanest.
Location and staff
Size of the room and the refregerator froze all my fluids in there
Hotel California is a great value for the money in a super location. The desk clerks were very helpful and courteous. The whole vibe of the place was great. I'll be back!
The cost of parking at the hotel is a little outrageous at $36, but there are less expensive options nearby.
Great location, friendly staff. I really can't say anything bad about the place. Parking is a bit of a challenge but nothing that would prevent me from staying again.
