Loved the location. Beautiful rainbow in the morning over the pier!
It's a great location and a beautiful building
TV wasn't working, parking was a big problem and no help at all no body cares, bathroom was never cleaned too much noise outside my room over night
First let me say I was bummed about the lack of parking in front of the parking but next door at Lowes I was able to valet park my car for 3 days without moving it for 40.00. Get ready to spend money for parking at any place near by. I live the vibe of the hotel and the price was right.
Location right near the pier and beach Not far to walk to town centre and restaurants Art Deco style of hotel Free breakfast Cost Great, helpful staff
Very draughty rooms with poor heating (but it was very cold when we were there) In need of updating especially the bathroom
The location is great, it has character, and the staff are friendly enough.
The hotel is old, cold, and far from modern hotel standards. When we arrived, the room was very cold, there was no heating within the room, and the kids were freezing. We spoke to reception, they tried to get the gas heater working in the room, failed, then gave us this tiny oil heater to heat the rooms - clearly didn't work, was hopeless. Warmth is a pretty basic requirement, and they couldn't even provide that. They gave us no other options, we couldn't stay there (too cold), it started getting dark and we had to quickly find a new hotel - really frustrating. Our advice is to not put yourself through that, and to look around at something more conventional. We ended up going to Marina Del Ray area and stayed at a far better hotel for less than half the cost! There were other gripes with this hotel too, but in summary, this place is below standard.
Beds were very comfortable. Location and staff were fantastic.
Quirky things like bathroom window that didn't close. No working heat in room so had to get a portable heater from the office. We were bitten by something the first night but couldn't find what it was--checked bed for evidence of bed bugs but never found out what it was that attacked us. Tub had a leaky faucet that was more of a steady stream. Sad to see in a state in a critical draught and no one seemed to care enough to get a plumber in to fix it.
Staff, especially James, was really nice. Room was clean and cool.
WiFi was slow and worked only in toilet.
its a quirky place to stay we like it...
could use a deep cleaning... tile grout in bath yuky, could use new caulking around tub....
The whole vibe and set up of the property.
A small property near the beach and close to downtown - the hotel was clean and comfortable and different to larger hotel chains. Quirky decor (surfboard shaped bed heads and vintage movie posters) and also free breakfast available in the reception area (coffee and bagels).
Noise of room and poor wifi
I loved the price, the cleanliness, the size of the room, the friendly staff, great basic yet delicious breakfast... This place remains the most laid back, professional, friendly place I've ever stayed. I will never go anywhere else!
...struggling to think of anything!
That we could travel with our adult son, who could have his own privacy, and a dog, drop our bags and go see sunset at the beach in 5 minutes. The location was awesome.
There was no place to park--few spots for the hotel and it costs $36 per night. Pet fee of $25 was not disclosed in the booking. Room was up a flight of stairs, uneven pavement.
for $200 plus, a poor value. hostel like feel. cool water shower. Fridge too noisy to leave on. small room. minimal bkft--bagels,bananas.
Location, able to walk to the beach. Comfy beds.
The wi-fi was non existent. The hotel advertises wi-fi but on check-in we were told that it was unlikely we would be able to logon and that was accurate. Either get the wi-fi fixed or state that it is not available. The hotel is old with lots of character, but it was also a bit noisy. We were on the ground floor and we could hear the people above walking around. The breakfast was really awkward with bagels and coffee in the lobby. Only 2 people could access this at once and there was a queue.
The hotel is in walking distance to the beach and all the restaurants and shopping in Santa Monica. Bagels at breakfast are fresh and delicious, and fruit is available if you are gluten intolerant.
Parking is a problem. The hotel prices are expensive although there are alternatives nearby. The hotel is also noisy and lacks air-conditioning.
No soap dish in the shower! Had to put soap on the shower floor! Install a $3 dish!
Welcoming Staffs Vintage room decorations Very close to Santa Monica pier and beach
I stayed at the Hotel California, Santa Monica, for six days in January 2015. I booked a suite and got upgraded to a bigger one. It was the first floor of a traditional house, with a living room, a bedroom, and a den with a second bed. It felt just like home, just right on the Santa Monica Beach. If you want a brand hotel, you can always stay in the expensive hotels, but the Hotel California can offer authentic Southern California experience at a reasonable price. The staffs are extremely friendly, James, Sarah, and Aaron, to name a few that I remember, and the rooms are cleaned & maintained very well.
The wi-fi connection is spotty at best. I used the tethering function from my cell phone, so that was not a big problem. But hey, who needs to surf the Internet when you can really surf right out of your door?
Central location near the beach, pier and shops nearby. Sweet HD TV with the best cable selection around.
The wi fi played up a bit and you have to pay for parking.
Friendly atmosphere, close to everything.
Couldn't stay any longer!
Great location, great staff, great decorations
Bathroom could use a make over
Great location, very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent location and very good value for money.
The only downside to my stay was that I was given a room at the front of the Hotel. There was a lot of traffic noise both say and night.
The beds were awesome and the hotel is just 3 minutes walking from the pier of Santa Monica.
The breakfast is not really a breakfast. It's just some coffee, juice, some beagels and muffins. The wifi is pretty Slow. It gets a little loud in the evening as the hotel is right next to the street...
