The Fairmont is an elegant, beautiful and a peaceful retreat in the city. The service is amazing and the staff takes extra good care of you. From Geoff and Rich at the front desk. To Juan and William as the doormen. The food in their on-site restaurants are culinary perfection. Room service is delicious especially the coffee and banana bread in the morning. I adored the beds and slept like a baby. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone. Jamie -Alabama

Nothing in particular, I expected so much more from the best hotel in San Francisco...The only nice thing is the city where it is located. The hotel itself is totally overrated. The room they first gave us, really small and old looking, had nothing to do with the one shown on the Internet that we were supposed to have booked. Then we complained and they assigned us a nicer, much bigger room on the second floor, but awfully noisy. There was a disco party the first night that lasted till midnight, and our daughter could not sleep. They tried to compensate us with a complimentary breakfast, which, again, did not meet our expectations at all (E.G., the orange juice was not fresh...hello, it is a 5-star hotel!!??). Really disappointing. We felt like they were pulling our leg. Never coming back.

It is a beautiful hotel in the style of grand hotels of a bygone era. Room was large and had lovely views. That is not to say that all rooms are similarly disposed Staff were either unhelpful or indifferent. I have not encountered this so consistently across all staff categories in a hotel of this calibre.

THe first night we stayed in the old section of the hotel which was quite dated. The second night we moved to the newer towers and the bathrooms were very spacious with both a tub and shower. We did not like the older part of the hotel and were upset by the number of additional fees such as a tax on parking that made the already expensive parking $57 per day.

location This hotel has been left behind by the current crop of true 5* hotels. It is dated/tired and does not provide many of the little things. Bars close before midnight. No complimentary water in the rooms - the $8 dollars for a bottle of water from the mini bar is a little steep, to say the least and $6 for a can of diet coke is a nonsense. It seems the hotel survives on providing the local community with a place to hold events etc, meaning huge numbers of non-guests at weekends, culminating in lower/slower service standards.

Coffee shop was excellent. Beautiful place and great location make time to wander the hotel halls and read history of place - amazing including the roof top garden. Cable cars on two sides. Day pass $14 and can see the city from early morning to midnight. We also took a tour recommended by the hotel staff and was excellent.

Great room, comfortable bed, and great location. Staffing at front desk was poor on arrival (2 persons) and at departure (1 person at 9 am!). The front staff had to apologize for the waiting both at check in and check out. Why don't they provide express check out like other hotels? After waiting and waiting to see my check out bill, I gave up, dropped the keys in the box and left so as not to miss my flight. How can there be only 1 person at the front desk of such a hotel at 9 am? At least have a manager available in case of line...

The decor was lovely and the front desk staff and doormen were very accommodating. If you need anything or have any questions, they are more than happy to help you. Not a place to stay if you are looking for a fun, place to stay. Security is everywhere and you feel like you are being watched. In fact, you are because there are cameras and hidden cameras. Also, you don't want to stay here if you intend to stay up past 11:00pm in your hotel room. Two of my friends had come to visit me in my room and we were just sitting there talking and not being very loud, at least to us. Twice we had security knock on our door and tell us to keep it down and they threatened to kick us out. Once again, we were not being loud. We had no music or tv on. All we did was talk. And we were not acting like annoying high school or college kids.
