no bad experience.
Size of rooms. Inner rooms look out onto a brick wall. When room is already small is a little dull. Outer rooms better but subject to some street noise
Small room, bathroom really cold in the winter and there was no way to heat it up.
Really comfy bed and pillows, nice bathroom, perfect location on the 8th avenue, easy to go everywhere and you can find almost everything you need in the neighborhood.
Even allowing for the fact that New York is expensive for hotels this one was very expensive when spot checking to hotels of similar standard Room was very small for just one person and it was supposed to be a double. Extra charge for safe which is not very common any more and given how expensive it was overall seems a rip off.
Location close to attactions and subway stop with line direct to the JFK train. Staff were friendly and helpful.
The staff were a little snooty. The rooms were small (which is expected in NYC) but they could have had some hooks or something for outside coats. Also, even asking the girl if there was a bar on the roof, she said 'yes' only for us to find just a few benches. People smoking in neighbouring rooms: you could smell smoke in your bedroom.
The location was fantastic and the bed was comfy and linen changed everyday and fresh water. Free wifi was great and good signal.
Size of room
Staff was great; everything worked. We loved the rooftop garden!
The room was very small, even by Manhattan standards.
The room is nice, clean but very VERY small. I stayed with my fiancé and we had to live out of our suitcases. There is very little space around the bed. The staff was pleasant without being intrusive and the beds seemed to magically make themselves as we never even saw any of the ninja housekeeping staff that did a great job. The location is the real "gem" walking distance from Penn Station and many more interesting sights and restaurants. This was our second time staying at the Gem and I hope to be back again in the future. On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give the Gem a solid 7.5.
Very little space for clothing. We had to walk around our suitcases.
Excellent location in Chelsea. One block from the subway. Great restaurant right next door. Sunday brunch was great.
Sleeping area tight but bathroom nice size. Early check inn was not available. Bar not open yet.
Cleanliness, service and location.
The room was tiny. But I wouldn't call this a bad experience as I knew it would be as such from various reviews I read before booking. If you need to open a suitcase, you need to place it on the bed. Plus our window opened to a building wall so the room felt claustrophobic. But like I said, I don't consider this a bad experience because I had expected it. The pros far outweigh the few cons.
Friendly and helpful concierge Clean room Clean bathroom Good heating in the room Strong wifi Nice lobby Outstanding location—close to the subway and in Chelsea Has a lift
Well, where should I begin?! I requested early check in and I was told it won't be an issue. Well it was. Waited after an 8hr flight in the lobby for 4 hours. Interesting enough, nobody left with luggage but then a room was available. Made me think, perhaps out convenience it wasn't available. No parking available even though website states parking available (at a cost). Room 305 has a Crack in the door, so if your lights are on, passer-bys have clear view of you on the bed. Doors slam shut very hard. Heard more in the middle of the night. Can hear everything between the walls. The tub and sink drains don't clear up as quick as it should. (pooling water constantly). Lastly, provide pen and paper in the room....
The location was amazing. Wifi was good.

Location, location, location
Great location close to galleries
My room was a bit small but okay for a solo person. Would have preferred if there was a small stretch/weight room since my room was too small to stretch in.
I liked the proximity to Chelsea piers, Hudson river, Meat Packing and Greenwhich Village etc.
WE (not them..) realized we were being overcharged by 50$ for the last night and only got our credit card credited after we argued. 45mn wasted and no compensation was offered. not a good experience. Double check that they charge you the correct amount (don't forget the sales and city taxes). room very small, but average for NYC
good shower, good location
room was a bit small
front desk very courteous and helpful
No mention of a $25.00 Incidentals Fee was given ahead of time, either by Booking.com, or the hotel clerk. They simply debited my card and then told me, to my embarrassment, that my card had been declined.
The decor is lovely. tastefully done.
Chelsea has seen better days. Close to major art galleries though.
Cleanness, confort, rooftop
There was nothing I disliked.
First and foremost, the resion I tend to choose this hotel is its location. Second, the staff are always truly wonderful and attentive. Lastly, the guest rooms as well as the common area or lobby are always clean, tidy and well organized.
Attentive staff and small but perfect room. Plenty of heat, and nice clean bathroom.
Need more towels.
The staff is great. From the front desk clerks to the maid, everyone is so friendly and willing to help.
