Friendly nice management. Reasonable rates.
No restaurant close by for breakfast. No coffee machine either! Coffee offered in room too limited. No real food (sandwich, etc) in vending machine.
Danny was very friendly and helpful on check-in. this location is convenient to all locations in and around the Santa Cruz/Capitola area. For me the convenience of a full kitchen far outweighed the glitz of larger more expensive hotels. I'll check in with Danny next time I stay in the area.
Old but comfortable, good bed and helpful staff
needs some TLC such as paint inside and maintenance on bath room fixture.
Service, functionality, professional staff,I'm always impressed with the Mgrs. can do attitude (Danny).
overall, the room was clean
sheets were stained, requested new ones, which were also stained, bought cover to avoid sleeping on sheets.
Friendly staff & the room (kitchenette studio) was a great size for the price. The decor is pretty old, 70s maybe, but I thought it made it more fun. Would definitely stay here again.
the washroom door is facing to the bed, it is very uncomfortable to people
Great location. Large Kitchen, take leftovers from restaurants back to your room. Warm up on the stove or in the microwave!
Very noisy Bathroom fan/light system.
This is my second time staying at the Hitching Post, and it definitely won't be my last. The location is great, being a few miles away from Downtown, the boardwalk, and UC Santa Cruz. The rooms are comfy. The staff is very nice and great at their jobs. Parking is included. For the price, this place is a great choice.
There isn't anything too bad. The wifi is ok. It does its job, but it isn't excellent. It's not the best hotel/motel, but you shouldn't be expecting a 5-star hotel. The Hitching Post is a great place to stay at if you want a comfy bed and a really nice location. For it's price, there isn't really anything you can argue about. You get your money's worth, and then some.
The location is great and the price fits I would stay there again.
The only thing that was bad for me was the shower had some mold in it.
simple, clean room, reasonably priced, overall quite enjoyable! long as you aren't too high maintenance. Something tells me if you look for bargain motels you aren't and will therefore enjoy your stay here. Good restaurants, theater and bars nearby at if you're up for a short walk
bed too soft for me (back problems). little remodeling could go a long way here. touchy shower temp
Inside the room was great- from the outside it looks depressing
Exterior looks old and cheap
The location was great, close to everything we needed to do. It was quite for being on a busy street.
What you pay for you don't get much, they could do a few things to make it better, like putting a roll of paper towels in the kitchen, easy and cheap but needed. And we wanted to go swimming, but the pool is seasonal, whatever that is... it was beautiful warm weather for Santa Cruz and couldn't use the pool. The outside looks nice, but the rooms need help. In the kitchen there was a panty, but it was just a closet that looked like where the water heater would go and it was dirty, should just close that door up so no one can look it. The closet in the bedroom has a funky smell. The kids had a good time, but they also don't see any of those things.
I would say it is a "best value" for a motel in Santa Cruz. The rooms are very clean, staff polite, and quite during the night. If being on the beach isn't a top priority, I would highly recommend the " Hitching Post."
Location not on Beach
It was very affordable.
Very old, and a bit creepy.
Cable, wifi, remote control ac , microwave , fridge, coffee maker, and comfy beds.
We had to wait outside for 20 minutes while they cleaned our room. The night stand was sticky and we found an old box of hot pockets and garbage behind one of the beds. The double bedrooms are full beds and not queens. Not enough towels.
lots of space and comfortable bed
wish the lighting in the room was better and adjustable. also they're a little beat up.
very nice and incredibly comfortable rooms and beds
breakfast was quite modest
Air conditioner old and very loud. Fridge very loud. Furniture worn and old. No breakfast. No smoking room smelled as a smoking room. The linen had wholes from cigarettes. Very poor value for money. Worst accommodation within 14 days trip!
Place is a little rundown.
Needed a reasonable place to stay while moving my son into his dorm at UC Santa Cruz. Was shocked to see how expensive rooms are. After researching dozens of hotels and motels in the area, booked 3 nights at Hitching Post. The property is located in a business strip of Soquel Ave but is only 5-10 min drive from everything (Downtown, UC Campus, Target, Costco, the Boardwalk etc). The single story buildings appear clean and freshly painted, each room has a small front patio with flowers planted as you walk up to the door. Parking is right outside each unit. Rooms are dated but spacious and clean, big new windows allow the breeze in (no AC in our unit but fan was provided) Linen is old school but the bed and pillows are comfortable. Bathrooms are small (in our King suite) but have brand new fixtures. Shower only, no tub. Second room in our suite was a kitchen/dining area. Original cabinets and countertops but new fridge and microwave. Everything very clean. If you plan on cooking or eating any food here, you will need your own pans/dishes/utensils/soap. We kept fruit, snacks and drinks in the fridge and made Starbucks Via each morning. There is a coffeemaker with standard "hotel coffee" supplies. Other meals were all eaten out. Overall this was a pleasant stay in a clean, quiet, conveniently located motel. We paid over $100 per night which is overpriced for a motel of this quality, but for Santa Cruz it's about the best value around. I wasn't willing to pay $250 per night at Best Western... used the money saved to outfit son's dorm room and explore the shops & restaurants along Front and Pacific Street. I would definitely stay at The Hitching Post again.
WiFi is slow, kitchen has no dishes or utensils, parking spaces are snug for larger vehicles, exiting the parking lot is a bit tricky. Look at your itemized bill as you check in, the computer system tried to charge me 20% sales tax and when I pointed it out, the owner apologized and said it must be a glitch. He corrected my bill but it could have been easily overlooked.
Clean, comfortable reasonably priced accommodation. The manager was very pleasant and helpful and it had a clean well cared for pool.
Thoughtful resident who started up his truck at 5.30 and left it running for 5 minutes before driving off!
Easy access to HiWay, restaurants, and wine tasting rooms.
All was good.
The staff was friendly and the room was clean. It was basically quiet and close to everything. Good parking!
We got a kitchenette but all the cupboards were bare. You expect to have to pots and pans etc to use the kitchenette while traveling and only having to provide your food. Noone travels with pots and pans and dishes. Not friendly at all for this ammenity. Also the TV had 2 stations and all the rest were paid per view or informercials. Sad TV watching.
