Score from 7 reviews Excellent 8.8/10
It was very old fashioned. We were told the owner traveled to other countries collecting old furniture to furnish the rooms. Very unique with a Victorian feeling. The rooms were comfortable. It was an older hotel but was clean. Clean bed, shower, bathroom.
Since it was built in the 70's the entry is a bit difficult to maneuver being on cobblestone. They did open up an area to the right of the door for handicap access and for the luggage carts which helps a lot.
Central location with many things to do in a 3 mile radius.
Poor service. The premises were in shambles. I felt like I was in a hotel from a cheesy 80's horror flick. I will look elsewhere next time.
Loved the antiques in the lobby. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Will definitely be back!
The staff was nice.
This place is like traveling in a time warp. It is old, dated, and feels like you have stumbled into Hotel California, hoping that you'll be allowed to leave. The booking.com directions link with GPS lead us to a field and we were instructed to "walk to our final destination." The roads to the hotel were under construction and were difficult to navigate. The hotel itself is a Germanic reproduction with etchings of Neuschwanstein Castle in the windows, which could be nice, but the place has fallen on hard times. The hallway smelled of marijuana. The carpets are 40 years old and the portrait of a woman in our room had its eyes poked out, lending to an eerie haunted house feel. The bathroom had clean towels, but the vanity and tiles were cracked and stained. The sheets were threadbare and my kids opted to sleep on top of the covers. We left in the am without showers and were happy to get on the road. I understood from the clerk that the building has been sold and will be renovated. I'd skip this place and reconsider after the update.
We picked the hotel because we got the room for $53. We were on vacation and just wanted to save some money and perhaps have a unique experience in what appeared to be "a themed hotel."
When we saw the room, we realized it was only worth about $53. Everything in the room was pretty much worn out and needed to be replaced. The mattress was comfortable, however. (In the interest of full disclosure, we have owned a three-star hotel, so we have a very critical eye.)
Ease of reservation
Room was EXTREMELY outdated. Cords/wires were exposed and/or laying out in plain view; would have asked for another room if I had my child with me. Wallpaper peeling off in bathroom.
People smoking pot in their room as we were walking down the hallway that's all you could smell
cold air conditioning good water pressure/shower
not clean, used toilet paper in bowl; hair on sheets; no bedspread; horrible decorating, i.e., carpet/drapes/bathroom all very old and in much needed upgrading; unfortunately, only hotel available due to Deere Classic golf tourney; will not stay again unless they remodel
Price was right. Staff did everything they said they would and promptly.
Property is pretty run down.
We really liked our room with fireplace, fridge, and microwave. Front desk was very helpful. Felt like we were staying in a German castle!
Just needs some general upkeeping to keep it a place where travelers will return to.
How old the hotel is makes it interesting. Has great features. The lobby is grand. It has a indoor pool so kids had something to do.
The road construction made it difficult to get out. The hotel outdoor pool is still under construction after a year +. The parking is off to the side and can be out of the way depending on what side you are staying on.
The staff was excellent, kind and helpful.
It looked scary approaching the hotel, almost didn't stop, but the kindness of the staff helped calm any fears. The re-do that is to happen will be a great improvement
Quaint decor and large room.
WiFi would not connect.
location Sunday brunch
Needs serious updating of facilities.
Like the mansion feel.
Needs some updating
This is a unique hotel--not a typical chain hotel. No one would confuse it with a Holiday Inn or a Marriott. It is old, and full of old German antiques. I enjoy staying somewhere that doesn't blend in my mind with every other hotel I've ever stayed at, but it won't be everyone's cup of tea.
I really like this place, and choose it whenever I am in the area. It is one of the least expensive, has very good wifi, and is unique. It is not modern and new though, and that will bother some people. It's almost more like staying at your grandparents' place, if your grandparents live in a somewhat run-down old German castle :)
We loved the whole hotel. Yes, it's a little bit worn, but the antiques and the atmosphere are wonderful. It just needs a little updating.
We didn't like to hear that a big chain had bought the hotel and was going to "renovate" it to be just like all the others in the chain. We are so saddened and disappointed that this beautiful and unique hotel is going to be just like everything else out there.
Friendly staff. Clean room.
The lodge looked old and in disrepair. I don't think they were prepared in some areas, for the large crowd of people in town for the 2014 HotRod PowerTour . I did not care for the breakfast and the service was awful.
I liked the Decore!! Staff was friendly and helpful!!
We liked the looks of The Lodge from the outside and the décor inside. Just like an old hunting lodge. We took several photos.
Several lamps did not work in the room. Ceiling lite kept flashing off and on obviously a electrical connection problem. Tv too small. No ice machine working on our 4th floor. No assist bars in the bathtub/shower.
This place must have been a classic at one time. Though time may have passed it by, and it is a bit eerie, the service and the room were too notch at a fantastic price
The place is old and obviously doesn't get enough business to afford the grounds and lobby to be kept in top notch condition
TV didn't work, table cloths were dirty for the bridal party and staff weren't accommodating.
Wasted time and money
The setting, the privacy of the room assigned, the atmsphere of the setup.
The high cost of food forced us to go down the street... Flat Screen TVs are the order of the day...
Nothing. The place was filthy.
We went there to get married and intended to use the room for the ceremony because of the pictures which showed a beautiful fireplace, which "Loretta", the person who we spoke to about the rooms was well aware. The rooms were dirty, light bulbs missing, bugs crawling out of the heater. The fireplace (we had a fireplace suite and a junior king suite) would turn off and on by itself, necessitating a 45 minute visit by the maintenance person who said there was a short in the electrical unit (this was a GAS fireplace). He did not have a ladder tall enough to replace the broken light bulb in the fan. There was so much dirt on the fan it looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in months. The iron leaked water from the bottom all over the jacket we were going to use for the ceremony. The carpet was filthy, the steps going upstairs had gum on them, the railings were dirty and left filth on your hand trying to hang on. We asked to see the manager. A sour man came out, and after we told him our concerns, made no apologies and said "I'll get maintenance", turned and walked away. We ended up spending two hours with our friends cleaning the room so we could decorate before the officiate arrived for our ceremony. The light fixtures in the hallways were broken with wires hanging out on the third floor where the junior king suite was. There was a smell of gas throughout the building. The elevator doors were damaged and closed on us as the 'safety' bar did not work. We had no where else to go as everything had been arranged, so we cleaned the room the best we could and had our ceremony. We then went to the bar afterwards for snacks as the restaurant closes at 9. The chairs are falling apart with metal frames exposed. We couldn't even get coffee for a 'Bailey's and Coffee'. The "Live Music" was a guy with a karaoke machine singing.
