private clean old style charm
Comfortable, clean bed.
The area is a bit dodgy but well located. It's about 10/15min walk to union square and about 40min walk to fisherman's wharf. The hotel / hostel is good for the money there's a sink and fridge in the room and enough toilets and shower s on each floor so you are not stuck queueing. There's no communal area or kitchen so if you are planning on cooking your own meals this isn't possible. There's no lift and reception is up a flight of stairs . There is also a band practice room in the basement which you can hear a dull sound from in the rooms but nothing too bad and it stops around 11pm. Overall I would stay at this hotel again as it was one of the cheapest and it was clean and comfortable.
The parking is a nightmare if you have a car. The street parking is confusing due to the street cleaning at specific tines and the car parks are really expensive. San fransisco is easy to get around on foot or using the trams.
bed comfort price
neighborhood loud outside noises dirty sidewalks small bathrooms
Staff very nice
The only thing we did not like was you can here everyone talking in there rooms through the vents and through the walls very loud when you are trying to sleep
Nice staff Centrally located
Seedy part of town Antiquated rooms Few electrical outlets Wifi only worked in lobby
Throws was right next to Japan town and about 20-30 min away (with traffic) to the airport.
One of the nexts rooms had either the TV on all night or had someone there that they were talking to-all night. Could hear them very loudly.
They didn't have my reservation. Thanks booking.com
IT's 15mins walk from major attractions of SF. Room service (cleaning) was good. It is quite place though we had a ground room floor right next to road.
The street hotel is on (greary) street gets full of drunks on the weekend night. That is Saturday night. Walking back or going some where seems really awkward. Carpet seems little dirty so we were careful not to put things on floor first day. There is no parking howevere there is a service garage back of the hotel who charges 20 dollars for 12hours.
For the price and convenience of location it was well worth it.
There was a $50 hold put on my account upon arrival as a deposit in case we trashed the room. There wasn't any warning of that prior to check in and is the priciest deposit I've seen for precaution like that at any hotel I've stayed at.
Nothing to like about this place, run by family, very rude, when you book once price, next day your card will be charged double no internet, very bad place
I booked on line for 119 dollars, they charged me 159 per night. Very rude people, people outside are all sex working, they come to hotel and leave. This place have bed bugs, I had to go to emergency room for treatment, develop rush I did not know what it was, thankfully was bed bug Again the worst place to stay, and they will charge you more, than what you book for I will never ever go their again M
This is a beautiful old hotel in a great location, 6 blocks from Union Square. We traveled with a group of 8 friends, 4 rooms with King Beds. The hotel was quiet and the beds were very comfortable. We were on the 6th floor and had a great view of the city! The lobby is an inviting space with nice couches to have coffee in the morning before heading out for your adventure. They were also gracious on moving our check out time an hour up so we could have lunch before we left. Nice little bar caddy corner from the hotel too. $5 cocktails. Good value for location! Highly recommended!
Lovely set up rooms with attention to detail
The building noise early in the mornings were annoying when on holidays.
Location Noisy No breakfast Poor value for money
The room and facilities were good value for money.
Close enough to Union Square, yet with all the homeless people hanging around the streets are smelly and messy. Amazing, how close to top hotels and posh shopping streets you find this.
The Monarch Hotel is a great location for walking to union square. It's not too far from Pier 39 (Fisherman's wharf) or even Pier 33 (Alcatraz cruises). The hotel staff were very nice. The elevator was old but it had an old school feel to it (one of the ones where you had to open a door to get in and the capacity was 5 people). Mel's diner was right up the street plus there were some hidden gems on geary street in the form of restaurants.
The room was very small and the hallways have a very old smell to them. I don't think that the room was worth the price but other than that my stay turned out nice.
The rooms are cozy, nice flat screen TV and great views.
No heat, refrigerator or air conditioning...well its an old boiler system that didn't work well. I would still stay here though.
i started to scratch within minutes of sitting on the bed...the cover had little stains..walked into the room an the smell...no security lock for the door...hated the night there....so what did i like nothing..absolutley nothing
Overpriced hotel rates on the week I arrived. Just don't have a choice as all other hotels were fully booked. It's a worn out hotel overall. Good thing the staff were excellent. Other than that, I don't recommend this hotel for business travelers.
Great deal Perfect location Friendly staff Cleanliness is good Love the elevator XD
Wifi coverage is fair The shower head need to be fixed
I think it just could all use a good updating. Scoop it out clean it up then it would be outstanding
Oh man I slept so well! Quiet calm private cozy room the best deal in town when I book online.
Hotel evening reception attitude is very bad, 尤其岐 depending Chinese people, we later learned that after the Taiwanese people have a good point, but still use the card every hotel room Daytime reception attitude is much better, but there told him that we want to extend the stay, deal with the results of the evening counters (and before the same individual), as will lock the card, we have to rerun harm down the hall told him, feeling too bad Hotel soundproofing is poor, noisy room next two nights, the hotel no treatment, aging facilities across the tramp lot, late back to the hotel felt very safe
staff was really helpful hotel has atmospher, soul nice elevator 6.0 magnitude earthquake :)
noises travel easily thru the building at night you can listen to dialogues on the hall sometimes a serious noise of industrial kind
Bed was comfy.
Checked in early and told our room was not ready. No problem; left our bags and took a walk. Later upon return were given a key to a lesser room than the king reserved. No mention of quality change nor an adjustment made in rate. After checking the room and seeing it was not a king, tried to get the front desk to make the correction. Told there were no kings left, but a rate adjustment would be made to the queen rate. Had I not pressed, I would have wronged twice: once in being cheated out of a nicer room experience that I was early for and told was not ready and secondly for not being given a lesser rate for a lesser room until I challenged them. The ladies room in the lobby was filthy. Street people partied late into the night right next to the hotel. Bed comforter was very hot. Blanket in the closet smelled of cigarettes. When I asked the desk for a new blanket, was told they didn't have any more. In the morning, while waiting for the relic of an elevator, noticed a blanket in the open housekeeping closet.
