The hotel needs renovation and better management. Upon arrival, we stayed more than 30 minutes waiting to check-in. There was a huge line, only two employees at the check-in desk and lots of guest complaining. The manager showed up once or twice but didn't do anything!!! Also bad was the experience with luggage store after checkout. The bell boy took like 10 minutes to put our luggage in the room, and repeated maybe 20 times that "he wouldn't be there in the afternoon", when we would be back to collect the luggage. We didn't tip - usually we only tip when we collect the luggage, if the service was outstanding - and he started to complain. We were all day afraid that our luggage would disappear, but luckly it was there when we returned.

We liked the location very much - centrally located and we could choose either to walk or take the subway. The meals and drinks we had at the hotel were all very good. Your pillows are too hard. You need to think about switching them out to those used by Hyatt (Pacific Pillows). We could not get the a/c to work to bring the room temperature down at nite. The breakfast was included, but I did not like how you charged my debit card (pending transaction during our stay). I spoke with the front desk and she could not explain but told me I would receive a credit; but that was not correct. At the restuarant I also questioned it and the young man gave a different explanation about receiving a credit. After checking out, the pending transaction was removed and the proper credit given for those charges we did incur. Because of this confusion, we did not eat the breakfast on 3 of the mornings. I would recommend ny Helmsley but with a cautionary explanation how you operate. It's confusing and your staff are not properly trained on this issue.

Availability of amenities Lack of in-room conveniences such as coffee maker, dorm fridge, microwave. It was obvious the rooms were of an earlier era, fitted at the last minute with flat-screen tv sitting on the bureau and blocking the rather large, nice wall mirror.

The hotel is very well located, not so far from shopping areas and transportation, but the street is quiet and very accesible. Excellent elevators always very fast and available!! Dealing thru Booking allowed to get the best rate we have paid for a room in ny in several visits! The hotel is changing to a Westin. Front desk not so good, and luggage services neither. Doormans were a joke!! Ask him for a cab and he looks around and just went to take the bags of other client without any explanation. There are several hotels with so nice doormans in ny, that this was really unfortunate!! Our A/C in the room didn't work.

Midtown location, v close to Grand Central, and 5th Avenue. Views of Empire State Building. Some nice restaurants near by. I had stayed at the hotel before, that's why I chose it this time for the nyc marathon weekend. However we had a very uncomfortable stay this time around. The room was extremely warm. The first two nights we messed around with the temp dial on the wall, unsuccessfully. We were still sweating in our beds at night. The 3rd day we requested assisstance from reception. No one came up to the room as promised. The 4th day I rang reception repeatedly until 'the engineer' was sent up. He told me there was no air con, so the best thing to do was to open the windows the full 6cm. When going out for dinner I requested a fan from reception. This was promised. On returning from dinner, no fan. Another night roasting in our beds, with sheets thrown off. This is completely unacceptable for a $500/night room.

The Helmsley is very well located, we chose this hotel as we were a family of 4 and there aren't many hotels in NYC that allow 4 in one room. This made our stay much more affordable. Although not huge rooms we managed well as we were only in the room for sleeping. The staff were helpful and the concierge had some good advice for sightseeing. Next door is a Pax cafe which had good healthy well priced meals. Overall we enjoyed our stay at THe Helmsley.

The location was perfect for shopping, shows, nyc sights. We were traveling as a 3 adult family and the room was roomy and the beds were comfortable. Never ran out of hot water or towels for the showers..(3 women!). The staff was very friendly and accomodating. We would return! concerige wasn't that knowledgeable didn't seem to want to help us find places to eat, etc.

Central location, beds very comfortable and room of a good size Food and drink in the hotel was very expensive, we didnt book breakfast ($27!), there are many diners/restaurants near the hotel at a fraction of the cost. Air conditioning in our room was very noisy so we couldnt use it... would make the room very uncomfortable in the Summer months. This is a clean comfortable hotel but it is expensive

This Hotel is in a great location, the beds where very comfortable and the room was cleaned every day. The staff on checkin where not very friendly. The staff, as in the receptionists, managers porters and door men all seemed to treat each question therefore you never got the same answer ... very strange!! There was no consistency therefore very confusing. Room service was very expensive.

Established hotel - been around for a long time - still in pretty good shape - understand going under major renovation - that is good - just need to keep up with other hotels. Very comfortable room - great view - a little hot despite us turning on air conditioner. Pretty quiet on the 40th floor. Need to have a coffe bar in the am - very invonvenient to go to restaurant for coffe each morning. Had to wait.
