The hall and the staff are very welcoming: we were checked in in advance without problems and they could store our luggage when we left the following day. Clean and newly renovated rooms, double windows (rare in SF) to keep the noise from the street out. Good breakfast included.
The breakfast room is quite small and it can be difficult to get a table sometimes.
the decoration maybe
the shuttle service is really poor, it spent me almost 1 and a harf hour to arrive at the airport. I was charged 8$ at the front desk, they gave me a receipt without told me that I must show it to the driver when I pay the other 8$. I lost it when I got off at the airport, then the driver said I must pay him 19$ without the receipt. Finally, I paid the driver 20$ and I missed my flight.
Very light rooms, large bed
Very meager breakfast. The heat system is very noisy, unstable internet connection
We had a backside room so could not hear the din of the street. The room was spacious and clean. Breakfast as included and was adequate.
No complaints, at all.
Check in was excellent and quick and the people were super nice. She told us she would give us a quiet room and gave us room 208. The room had a view of the street but was not right on the street. Very private. The room was vey basic and simple but had everything we needed, besides being very clean. The shower was nice and warm. The bathroom spotless. Heating in the room worked great. TV was modern, nice size and at a perfect location. No odors at all. Windows in room and bathroom actually opened all the way and there were 2 windows in each one. We opened the first glass window and behind it, there was another window. It really kept the noise and cold out once you closed them. The one funny thing we noticed is that at night, the room shook as if there were small earthquakes. It happened many times during the night. It only woke my drunk husband once or twice, but it did me many times. I think it was caused by the electric cable buses driving by, but I am not sure since the room was so quiet. Having Mel's Diner right off the lobby was real cool. My husband went down and grabbed us a delicious seared tuna salad and an order of sliders that were amazing. I was shocked at how good and healthy the meal was for a diner, and quick!!! Opal offered free breakfast in the morning but we actually went out to Brenda's French Cafe nearby for some grits and biegnets. A tip about parking...If you are not going to need your car in the city and it will just be parked the whole time, don't do the hotel vallet parking for $42 a day. Go to the parking lot of the theater nextdoor, on Polk and Sutter, I believe, and it is $26 for 24 hrs but you can't take your car in and out as you please or you will pay more. There is a CVS real close to hotel and other convinience store. It's a great location. I will be back to Opal again, even though I only live 45 min from SF. Price was good and I felt very comfortable there.
The room shook during the night as if there were small earthquakes.
Staff were very friendly and helpful
Very very noisy. Felt like Motorway went through our room. Would not recommend for location either. Unsafe and area around hotel dodgy. Breakfast poor.
Location was good. Room was large. Friendly and helpful staff. Parking was secure. Gave a AAA discount that covers parking. Liked it was adjacent to Mel's drive in. A door from the lobby right to the restaurant. We ate there twice it was delicious. Beds were comfortable and clean.
Old - not updated. Was afraid to take my shoes off on the carpet. Shower was very touchy. Went from boiling hot to freezing cold in a fraction of a turn. No fan in the bathroom. Window that opened right to apartments in an alley. For the price it was really not a value.
Clean, large bed, great shower, all the basics covered
The area is a little dodgy so just get a taxi. Breakfast is basic like a hostel
Very old, and smelled like an old hotel.
Great place everyone was helpful.
Wish I was more preparedetails for the trip.
Easy access to BART, downtown, Golden Gate Park and beaches by various bus lines.
The rooms were very clean, and the mattresses were recently inspected for bed bugs. We noted that they have kept up with all inspections and marked them properly on the mattress surface. The blankets were warm, clean and plentiful. We were all warm as toast! The parking was gated and safe. Everything was under lock, including the front door. The staff was extremely friendly and the breakfast was substantial. The lady at checkout was very happy to help us split the bill with all of our friends. And in all, the entire establishment was professional, and seemed to run very smoothly.
There were many hidden surprises throughout our stay. While the room was great, and soundproofed well, we had to go out and purchase new pillows from target because the ones we slept on during the first night were very old and firm. Honestly, by the end of the night I rested my head on my laundry because it was softer. We got guff from the night manager when we asked for an extra pillow for our 4th guest. Apparently there is not enough supply for all of the guests that could be staying. When we arrived we were greeted with an additional bill for parking. I picked this hotel because it had wifi and parking included. When we booked this room, we were following a very strict budget. If it wasn't for the fact that we were all pooling together, I would have walked out from the reservation right there. The wireless internet was another surprise. Not that it was slow or anything, but you get your first night free, then you have to pay an additional charge to use their services. In a time where cellular networks have unlimited data, this is an awful waste of money. We opted to not use their services. The bathroom was extremely cramped, and appliances like the hair dryer had to be looked out for since they were easily knocked off. I can understand there were fire codes that demanded it be placed facing away from the shower, but there has to be a better location for that. The elevators are in need of servicing. There is a very disturbing shake in the front elevator that I believe could be fixed with some oiling of old parts. Wrapping up, this was a good stay, dont get me wrong. The staff was excellent, the room was immaculate, and the location was in the center of everything. There were just too many little surprises that made the stay uncomfortable. But for the most part, good job.
Location good staff welcome wine
Beds were comfy, staff was helpful, nice and ready to serve. Location was good, easy access to a wide range of SF. Room was overall clean. Parking was in a secure locked place. Coffee was great! Served us well for 2 days and we would stay there again, can't bet the price. Cheapest one I found after weeks of looking, but felt safe and wasn't afraid to lay our heads down on the bed :)
Room was musty, but this is a old hotel,so to be expected. We didn't mind but some might, that the rooms are small, Carpet is old, decor is as old as well.
toilet and towels are clean. bed are comfortable breakfast good
carpet is dirty, should provide slipper and kettle in the room
Despite the poor neighborhood the location was central and the price was right.
I read a review after i checked in about a bedbug infestation that someone from 2009 reported in my same room. I had trouble falling asleep thinking about it but woke up with no bites to report.
Location is good
Wifi connection is very bad
Clean and simple hotel which could do with a refurbish. We had a double room which was quite big with a large and clean bathroom. Decent location in SF is good too.
The hotel is old-style building and could do with a refurbishment. Lobby staff weren't very friendly.
Proximity to major points of interests, restaurants, shopping, etc. On-site parking. Free breakfast.
You can hear the wooden floors undearneath the carpet starting to creak. The free WiFi could benefit from extra bandwidth.
We didn't go to San Fran intending on spending a bunch of time in a hotel room. Just needed a place to crash. The room was clean. The location was within walking distance of Union Square. The price was more than fair.
Nothing that the price didn't make up for!!
Not in the center but convenient bus and train connection, 20 min walk to Union square. Very helpful staff. Good Wifi.
Bed a bit too soft for me. Breakfast grab and run style.
Wi-Fi keeps droping out all the time . parking is way to much. if you can get it cheap then it ok for money but not the best
Look, feel comfort.
Breakfast is rather poor with paper plates
We purposely chose an interior room so we wouldn't have street noise, and found it to be very quiet. Clean, comfortable room, decent size, high quality bed - slept well
