Location, easy parking
Only 1 person in locked lobby, minimal bathroom, poor space design by lousy architect long ago
Close to the MAX light rail, very clean and comfortable room-flat screen TV, mini fridge, microwave & coffee maker and nice linens
Wi-Fi was a little hard to connect to, but I wasn't there for Wi-Fi
The bedsheets were very clean as well as the room. The room has a fridge and a microwave. The MAX station is just in front of the hotel and you're getting really fast to Downtown.
The internet connection was really slow and sometimes it didn't work in our room (on the first floor).
Close to Mississippi
Wifi was practically nonexistent
It was very close to the rail.
It was durty, sticky carpet and mold everywhere.
Bed was comfortable and got a good nights rest.
Bathroom a bit cramped.
I wanted to be close to downtown Portland, but the room prices were ridiculous! The Palms Motel is just a few minutes from downtown, and the rates were very reasonable. I have stayed in much worse places. The bed was huge and comfy, and the room had a microwave and a fridge. I was pretty satisfied
The bathroom was tiny and a little dirty.
We wanted a reasonably priced place to stay. There was a letter from a man who gives tours of neon signs at the front desk commending The Palms for its impeccable upkeep ('50's neon sign). Near a really fun Tiki themed bar called Alibi (you can walk to The Palms from there) and right near a bus stop. Not a 4 star hotel but fun. We went for a long weekend (live in San Francisco) and it was perfect for us. They should change the photo on booking so that the neon sign is lit. The current pic makes the motel look like a place to meet your pimp. In reality it's cheap and cheerful.
The person at the front desk tried to charge my credit card again. But I got on the phone with Booking and customer service set things right. I didn't like his attitude (he was impolite when he insisted that this was how things were done). I'll admit I felt a little bit of pleasure when he was told that, in fact, there was no need to charge me again.
We did not realize that it had a second floor. I'm disabled and can not climb stairs. They found us a downstairs room at check-in. Customer friendly. Was quiet in the evening and parking was outside our room.
The room had not been cleaned by 3:00 pm when we checked in.
Reception staff were very happy to give us plastic forks so we could eat our takeaway. Suspected 'transaction' in the parking lot.
3 ants in the bed (thankfully not more!) Spot of blood on the sheets. Didn't dare use hot tub.
Located near a MAX stop, walking distance to Mississippi St. bars, restos (cute area). Good price and only hotel charging less than $300 that had rooms during a busy summer weekend. Retro neon sign Big parking lot (although we didn't use, it's convenient). Good Wifi Having a sense of humor makes this place at least worth a few laughs.
Only available room was a smoking room, so I expected it to smell but the room was much worse than expected. It was on another level. Everything, especially the carpet that felt damp to bare feet, was gross. Felt like a crackhouse. Difficult to feel comfortable, clean, or relaxed. We couldn't wait to leave.
This older Portland motel makes you feel like you are staying in a motor lodge from the 50's. The building overall appears pretty run down. But, I have to say the room was VERY clean given the age of the motel. The beds were a bit saggy but the linens were newer and again, very clean. I would not hesitate to stay again.
The clerk at the front desk was not overly friendly and when I wanted to pay with my American Express he was noticeably perturbed. He requested I use Visa or Mastercard. I told him I preferred to use AmEx if they accepted it. They do and he eventually ran my card. The whole thing left me feeling like I was bartering to stay at the run down place. After that experience, I was worried. But as I stated the room was fine. The WiFi was hard to connect to but then was fine once I figured out the password.
It was fine and the price and location was good. I'll stay there again. I don't spend much time at a hotel I sleep and shower there and both were fine.
We stayed twice in a fortnight - rearranging travel as we were confident with staying there again. The bedrooms have everything you need to be comfortable - comfortable beds, kitchen facilities, clean bathroom, good air-con, and excellent wifi. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a decent and reasonable motel on Portland then this ticks all the boxes.
- cigarette burns on all blankets - seedy characters knocking on your door at 4am - staff charges per person over 1 guest - will not refund if you feel unsafe - be sure to bring flip flops, towels and pillow cases. Would not recommend using theirs - left after one night and paid for two more nights after leaving to find another hotel. Did not feel safe in any way - staff forced to work 16 hour shifts. - multiple guests in line in the office to complain or ask for refunds - manager refuses to speak to you in person, rather shouts through a closed door - not centrally located unless you plan on spending time at other dingy motels - not worth the cost. Seriously airbnb or hotel tonight for a more valuable comfortable stay
Great location... A no frills brilliant stay!! Love the neon sign out front!!
The room just stank of smoke not sure anything in there had changed in 30 years
I stayed here about 4 years ago and not much has changed. The beds look nice with blindingly white sheets and colorful bedspreads (no cigarette burn holes) but the rest of the room was old and decrepit. The AC/heating unit and satellite TV receiver are the only modern updates to the room. AC worked very well on a hot day almost 100 degrees. Palms is near the Overlook Park Yellow Line MAX station. They have a small coin laundry on site.
You almost have to sit sideways on the toilet in room 34 as it is so close to the wall. Shower stall is small and looks unreliable but worked ok. There are no hooks or medicine cabinet space or even a ledge on the sink to put stuff. Fridge was full sized, missing the door handle, and the inside top of the freezer was thick with ice. The TV is the old tube type (STILL no flat screen in 2014?) but it's on some kind of satellite system that gets a lot of channels. The nearest convenience store (Plaid Pantry) is a long walk or one MAX stop away to the north. They used to charge $40 per night here and even had a weekly rate of $210 in 2010 but now they're taking advantage of the fact that a lot of Portland hotels charge $200 to $300 per night in the summer so they charge $70 or more per night and when they have a weekly rate it's $325. Way overpriced, considering the decrepitude of the property.
Updated rooms, fair price Wifi Moderately comfortable bed, Coin-operated laundry on site. Convenient location.
Poor towel quality (small, scratchy), could hear neighbors and outdoor activities a bit too clearly for solid rest, no weekly rates available. 11am check out time; facility INFLEXIBLE regarding that time;,late check out fee not even offered as an option.
excellent value for money great motel for one night's stay
front-desk not very friendly
didn't want a smoking room. bathroom door would NOT close. bright lights outside, curtains would not shut tightly. Bathroom smelled like mildew(I'm alergic to mold) pillows were hard and flat..room smelled like smoke.
Really nice and helpful staff, super quiet rooms, great cheap place
Great value for the money. The curb appeal leaves a little to be desired but the rooms are nice.
Easy to find and close to downtown. Comfortable bed and pillows, good shower. Very clean. Good value for the Portland area. Although the motel looks decent on the outside, the rooms are even nicer. Plus, as everyone says--an amazing neon sign!
Only complaint was that the king-size bed left only a very narrow space at the foot of the bed to get to the bathroom.
Room condition, air condition, cleanliness
I paid $100 extra for the jacuzzi room and it didn't even work. The room layout was super awkward with the bed right in front of the bathroom. The jacuzzi was in the living room too which was weird. The mattress was super firm and not comfortable at all. Probably the worst night of sleep I've had. I had to go back to office 3 times for them to reactivate the room key. After the third we just gave up and settled with just one key.
