Great PR pimping this hotel chain... Andre Balazs business savvy.
A fresh coat of paint on a rundown hotel and a few "quirky touches" make this a hipster hangout that appeals to the fashion and art world that look for things that are clearly popular at the moment. Not enough substance to justify the prices... But you can't beat the location ;)
Cool place. Buy new ping pong paddles.
There was not a lot to complain about besides the bed.
Not as nice as the other Standard Hotels
People the food the booze and location.
One Elevator always seem to be being worked on
THE BED AND THE BATHROOM
Professional staff room bar and pool ambient very cool
Great service, location, and quality customer service. Hotel has a lot of personality.
Great service and location - the restaurant was terrific and the pool and bar looked great - never got a chance to check it out though! Fun and groovy vibe and very comfortable room. Loved the retro decor - especially the cork wall tiles in the bathroom. Amazing mini bar too!!
Quite noisy (but I am an Aussie country girl so anywhere in LA is going to be noisy!) Since I logged onto the free wifi, I have been bombarded with lots of spam which is really disappointing - don't forget to tick the box that stops them from sharing your email address with anyone else!
Good location, fancy lobby
Very loud due to night club/bar in-house, may need to ask for room on the other side of the hotel
Good Location, No noise from the outside
The staff were very helpful with tips of where to go and directions. The valet was great too - also very helpful. The pool is terrific and the rooms were cosy with very comfy bed (particularly our upgraded king bed). The cleaners were fantastic too, the rooms were cleaned to perfection every day.
Upon checkout, we realized we had left some items behind in the room. I contacted the Standard who said they had located the items and would post them to our next destination. Unfortunately these items never arrived and the hotel have not been particularly helpful in chasing these items up. They are still missing.
The hotel was overall very good but it felt a little faded it felt like it could go with a bit of a face lift The restuarant wasn't great nothing terrible but just nothing special.
This was my third time to L.A., but this time I wanted the full Hollywood experience and that is exactly what you'll get by staying at The Standard. Before I booked my room, I read a lot of reviews about noise complaints and snobby people. The fact is, it's a very classy place, with it being on Sunset Blvd, and it attracts a lot of young partiers. The lobby does in fact turn into the likes of a night club on the weekends, so I would recommend requesting a room on the top floor if you want something a little quieter, which is what I did. My room faced Sunset Strip and there was some noise at night, but it wasn't nearly as bad as what some people have complained about. The worst you'll hear is an ambulance or firetruck siren every half hour or so and drivers honking their horns at each other, which is something very common about L.A. drivers. The street sounds didn't bother me. If you shut the door to the balcony and have the TV going on at night, you'll barely notice the noise. The location couldn't have been more perfect. Being a solo traveler, I wanted to save as much money as I could, so I didn't rent a car. If you're young or able, I would recommend walking to the hot spots. If you leave the hotel and go left, you'll walk towards The House of Blues, Mel's Drive-in, The Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy, The Rainbow Bar, etc. There are lots of different restaurants to have dinner and drinks at. The walk is about 10-20 minutes, and it's completely worth it. If you leave the hotel and go right, you'll be walking towards the lower part of Sunset, which is right by Hollywood Blvd. The walk is about 40 minutes, which I did, but it's also a quick cab ride. The point is, The Standard is the perfect place to stay, as it's near absolutely everything you need to see in Hollywood. The staff was very helpful and polite. They answered any questions I had and always made sure I was taken care of.
I wasn't a big fan of the food. I found that I didn't know what half of the items were on the menu, and at that, the food was a little over priced...but so is everything else in Hollywood. I'm also young and haven't really been exposed to that kind of food because I've never stayed at such a classy place before. I would definitely recommend the food off of their breakfast menu, though. There are many, and I mean many, places in the area to eat at, whether it be fast food or sit down dinners, so you don't have to always eat at the restaurant. Upon unpacking when I arrived, I noticed that there was no dresser for my clothes. I had to use the desk drawer for a few things and otherwise lived out of my suitcase, but that wasn't a big deal. The wifi was a little slow at times, but if you're in Hollywood for leisure and want to spend a lot of time on your computer, you're better off not going on vacation at all.
the funky vibe of the hotel, the size of the room, the shower, the views from the pool-facing rooms
it does tend to get noisy at night, so if you're looking for peace and quiet, this probably shouldn't be your choice
The staff was really nice
There are much better hotels on Sunset. Stick with hotels that really do set the standard for comfort and style. The standard is a wanna be hipster place that reeks of weed and God only knows what was happening with the people that kept going in and out of the bathroom at the pool. It would be nice to have a chair on the balcony and the bathroom sink is a small cheaper version of an IKEA display. The Best Western down the street was probably a better option from all angles. By the way I'm not an old person, I'm in my late 20's.
Great atmosphere & decor, the diner had awesome food & the rooms were large & comfy. The pool area &bar were a great place to relax and have drinks. Highly recommend!!
The first night we had crazy loud neighbours going until 5am, we complained in the morning and they quickly and easily moved us to a much quieter and nicer room. Worked out well but not sure what they would have done if the hotel was full. Really amazing food.
Loud neighbours on the first night but hotel sorted it out well.
Perfect Location in WeHo. Bed is comfortable. Effective valet parking.
Very noisy - Poor isolation between rooms and exterior. Hotel is old and has been cheaply renovated. Pool looked dirty and not well maintened Valet parking is expensive (34$/night)
Location was great, food and staff in the diner were great
Reception team were very 'boring' and unhelpful, 34 dollars a day for parking on top of room cost, rooms although trying to be modern are actually very cold looking and basic, hotel looks like it needs an overhaul but is just using its past reputation and location to attract guests, would not recommend this hotel very disappointed and would actually tell people to. Avoid this hotel at all costs
- young and hip hotel - friendly staff
The shower head was amazing, I mean the thing that spits water at you. Lovely staff and loved the decor and vibe of the place. Will definitely stay here every time I'm in LA.
- Room was very big, very clean. - Free Wi-Fi in both the pool area and room. - Valet parking was available all the time. - Very fun if you're there with your significant other and you're just there for fun. There's always a DJ playing good music in the lobby and pool (although the music coming from these areas may wake you up). The hotel has its own club. - There is a 24/7 open restaurant in the hotel. I personally haven't been to it but it looked good enough. - 24/7 room service. - Location is excellent. I walked on Sunset Blvd. both day and nighttime (so no safety issues). Quite number of shops and restaurants around. - Staff was very friendly and helped me plan my short amount of time excellently. - I arrived at around 22:00 to check in and they gave me a room on the ground floor that had absolutely no view. It was a quiet room. They told me that they held this room especially so I could sleep comfortably, as they presumed I would be tired). I do believe in there good intentions but I also wanted to get a nice view. So they upgraded me to a room overlooking LA and the pool area for absolutely free! So that's a huge plus. Even though the room had some noise in it due to the music and the people in the pool area, it was worth it for the view. - As I was in LA for semi-business reasons, I went to bed relatively early and woke up early, so I couldn't enjoy the hotel to the fullest. If you're in LA to party and have fun with your friends or your significant other, definitely stay here. Otherwise, you might be more comfortable staying somewhere more conventional and quiet.
- There was no safe in the room. How do you not have a safe in a hotel room? - The hotel, while being intriguingly decorated, had certaing design quirks. The corridors had this very distinct 'old building' smell, Which I presume was the byproduct of the carpets and the corridors not being exposed to fresh air a lot. - The bed was...weird. I wouldn't call it uncomfortable, but it was weird. And it squeaked. - As I've stated, if you plan on going to bed at 22:00-23:00 and get up early, you'd probably be more comfortable in a more conventional hotel.
noisy and parking fee
Valet was prompt in bringing my car around.
Room was very out dated looking and the bean bag chair looked dirty and used.
