Liked having a small office and kitchen in my room. Would rather make my own breakfast than find a restaurant early in the morning. Decent WIFI. A couple of restaurants and a small grocery within a few yards of the hotel. Worked well for me to get some groceries and cook in the room.
TV was not great. Older set with standard definition (not HD). View from my room was not great - essentially the small space between hotel and apartments next door. Overall that wasn't a problem for me. If you are looking for a great view, then you may want to check with them about which room you get.
Great location, easy to move around. Good kitchen facilities.
Bed not terribly comfortable. We stayed in a front room and at times it was noisy. Perhaps double glazing of the window would help.
The ladies at the front desk were wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. The room size and comfort was great and the full kitchen was clean and well stocked. Nicely furnished with a bright and airy outlook. Loved the Art Deco style classic feel and the old school lift.
Lack of Air con but this time of year wasnt an issue.
Everything I needed was to hand. My hair straighteners didn't work, and they gave me a pairs. Facilities were great and location was just perfect!
Noise from the main road and the price
Close to were I needed to visit.
Heater and refrigerator were noise
Quaint Full kitchen. Small ( number of rooms ) Location. Murphy bed
Number of electrical outlets. Small bed Murphy bed No thermostat/ had to cool by open window. Pillows Shower height.
The hotel has all the necessary facilities on site. Although it has no eating places in the building, there are many eateries within a few blocks, three within 50 metres of the door. Location is great - a few blocks from Union Square, a few blocks from Van Ness and the buses running along it. Old-fashioned lift was memorable but fun. We'd recommend it to others.
The staff could have provided more information about the local supermarkets and eateries.
We enjoyed our stay. The apartment was as charming as you would hope an apartment would be in San Francisco and extremely clean. It was a quiet neighborhood but very convenient to breakfast restaurants. I would stay here again.
Size of apartment.
Because the room had a window on first floor with a street just outside, sleeping was difficult!! Room could have been furnished in a better way
I loved my studio apartment at the Steinhart. It was plenty big, and I walked to Trader Joe's my first day to pick up breakfast coffee and snacks. The apartment was very cozy, wifi worked well and it was very quiet. It is close enough to walk to Union Square, and the staff were most gracious and ordered cabs for me when needed. It was so much more comfortable than a sterile hotel; I'd return in a heart beat.
Very quiet and cosy apartment. Loved the entrance and ambience of the hotel entrance and lobby area. Having a laundry downstairs was appreciated although only one machine was in working order at the time. Staff member Nicole very helpful.
Bed bit on the small side. The location was a little far from Union Square.
Luxurious accommodation, a pleasure to come back to after a hard day's sight seeing. Very good staff, always helpful and courteous.
Location was ideal, kitchen was sufficient and unit was quite good. Loved the old building and the lift.
Noise from sirens as not double glazed being an old building.
Great size apartment Character building Helpful friendly staff
No fan in bedroom in sweltering heat and staff unable to provide one for the entire weeks stay Very shoddy paint and finishes Very noisy
We had an apartment at front of building on Sutter Street which was light and spacious with good furnishings. Because of traffic noise we closed windows and used ceiling fans. I am not sure if this would work all year. Steinhart is centrally located.
The lift while quaint often would at times not move between floors because someone had left door open.
The Steinhardt has a key code entry door so you know you are safe and secure. It is centrally located just a short walk from all the attractions including Union Square, Market street shops, great restaurants and bars and also the convenience of local public transport. The rooms are large, fantastic bed, full bathroom (with a tub), lounge, TV and dining table and self contained kitchen. There is a laundry in the basement for guest use. There is a small back terrace garden great for a private happy hour drink after a long day sight seeing. The hotel staff are very friendly and keen to offer information about the local area, taxis, cable cars, airport shuttle services etc.
There is no parking at this hotel but we stayed 7 nights and just walked everywhere. The kitchen was very basically decked out and could have provided more cooking utensils etc. There is no kettle for a cup of tea!! The room we were originally offered was on Sutter Street and was VERY noisy so we requested to be moved to another apartment towards the back of the building. There is a lot of road noise in San Fran - if you want to sleep well and enjoy this great hotel - request a room towards the rear of the building.
Close to Union Nation Square Cafes and groceries nearby Easy airport transfer (shuttle arranged from the hotel) Have suggested tours around city
Nothing. Avoid area Tenderloin nearby (easy to do so)
we stayed in room #1 it felt like we were home
Location Size of apartment Old history building and lift
For a hotel in a busy part of town we found our room very quiet.staff were helpful and pleasant. The building has obviously seen better days, but we enjoyed the faded glory feel of the place. Plenty of good coffee houses and restaurants around(try Polk St) S
Some might find the area a little on the rough side but it was no problem to us.
The apartment was in a great location for the city and spacious. Highly recommend for a longer stay!
No kettle but we worked with boiling water on the hob so wasn't an issue.
By no means a bad review the hotel is beautiful and a real experience to stay in, "personality hotel" is a great title to describe this place. Good location about 40 mins to the pier about 10 mins to union square i would recommend to anyone who like their food head down to pier one great market style places. The reception staff are brilliant and helpful, great at helping us sort the buses to the places we went further afield.
However a few advisory tips to anyone booking, we had a room on the fourth floor, very spacious dining room and lounge area, decent bedroom and kitchen but a real pokey bathroom which needs a update, nothing to look out of the windows except brick walls so would recommend requesting a higher level if this would bother you. Our biggest gripe would be the noise that comes from the room above (loud stomping - no exaggeration as we're very tolerant!) we let reception know but were told it was a family above. They were understanding but couldn't offer a different room. Fortunately we're early risers so not not a major problem but could cause a issue if you like a lie in/peace and quiet. Lastly if you book through a agent make sure you double check they charge the right amount tax - we agreed to pay 16.5%, got there and it was bumped up to 20% (all adds up when you have to pay for your room to be cleaned as well!) so just check the charges carefully.
The location,no parking
Ambience of the hotel, atmosphere, perfect!!!!!
The building was old and has a very historical feel to it which is kind of charming. The original woodwork is actually gorgeous. The location is fairly good and puts you central to lots of stuff. We became used to the place during the course of our stay and found it to be not that bad. Wifi worked well which was nice and a somewhat pleasant surprise in a building this old.
We were a little shocked at first as we typically stay in 4 star hotels and hoped this would not be too far below that mark. The reception staff was on break when we arrived so I waiting 20 minutes before I could check in. Things were made worse due to faulty instructions from booking, com which told us that we needed to go to a sister hotel initially to check in (but that's a detail). The staff when they arrived were helpful but seemed inexperienced and all alone! There is no parking in front of the hotel so your car is just on the street which worked ok but some guests struggled. No one to help w luggage but I guest that's the nature of this place. The elevator is ancient but sort of works. Taking the stairs was most efficient if not desirable. The rooms were clean but dated. The windows would not open and close--some I think are painted shut and another had no working lock. The area around the hotel is kind of dodgy with quite a few homeless (although this seems to be a major problem for SF overall). The hotel staff kindly highlighted the nearby no-go zone that is near the hotel which I really did appreciate. So overall, we were shocked when we arrived and stayed only because it was not refundable. After 4 days we found it tolerable enough but would never return.
