Great size apartment Character building Helpful friendly staff
No fan in bedroom in sweltering heat and staff unable to provide one for the entire weeks stay Very shoddy paint and finishes Very noisy
We had an apartment at front of building on Sutter Street which was light and spacious with good furnishings. Because of traffic noise we closed windows and used ceiling fans. I am not sure if this would work all year. Steinhart is centrally located.
The lift while quaint often would at times not move between floors because someone had left door open.
The Steinhardt has a key code entry door so you know you are safe and secure. It is centrally located just a short walk from all the attractions including Union Square, Market street shops, great restaurants and bars and also the convenience of local public transport. The rooms are large, fantastic bed, full bathroom (with a tub), lounge, TV and dining table and self contained kitchen. There is a laundry in the basement for guest use. There is a small back terrace garden great for a private happy hour drink after a long day sight seeing. The hotel staff are very friendly and keen to offer information about the local area, taxis, cable cars, airport shuttle services etc.
There is no parking at this hotel but we stayed 7 nights and just walked everywhere. The kitchen was very basically decked out and could have provided more cooking utensils etc. There is no kettle for a cup of tea!! The room we were originally offered was on Sutter Street and was VERY noisy so we requested to be moved to another apartment towards the back of the building. There is a lot of road noise in San Fran - if you want to sleep well and enjoy this great hotel - request a room towards the rear of the building.
Close to Union Nation Square Cafes and groceries nearby Easy airport transfer (shuttle arranged from the hotel) Have suggested tours around city
Nothing. Avoid area Tenderloin nearby (easy to do so)
we stayed in room #1 it felt like we were home
Location Size of apartment Old history building and lift
For a hotel in a busy part of town we found our room very quiet.staff were helpful and pleasant. The building has obviously seen better days, but we enjoyed the faded glory feel of the place. Plenty of good coffee houses and restaurants around(try Polk St) S
Some might find the area a little on the rough side but it was no problem to us.
The apartment was in a great location for the city and spacious. Highly recommend for a longer stay!
No kettle but we worked with boiling water on the hob so wasn't an issue.
By no means a bad review the hotel is beautiful and a real experience to stay in, "personality hotel" is a great title to describe this place. Good location about 40 mins to the pier about 10 mins to union square i would recommend to anyone who like their food head down to pier one great market style places. The reception staff are brilliant and helpful, great at helping us sort the buses to the places we went further afield.
However a few advisory tips to anyone booking, we had a room on the fourth floor, very spacious dining room and lounge area, decent bedroom and kitchen but a real pokey bathroom which needs a update, nothing to look out of the windows except brick walls so would recommend requesting a higher level if this would bother you. Our biggest gripe would be the noise that comes from the room above (loud stomping - no exaggeration as we're very tolerant!) we let reception know but were told it was a family above. They were understanding but couldn't offer a different room. Fortunately we're early risers so not not a major problem but could cause a issue if you like a lie in/peace and quiet. Lastly if you book through a agent make sure you double check they charge the right amount tax - we agreed to pay 16.5%, got there and it was bumped up to 20% (all adds up when you have to pay for your room to be cleaned as well!) so just check the charges carefully.
The location,no parking
Ambience of the hotel, atmosphere, perfect!!!!!
The building was old and has a very historical feel to it which is kind of charming. The original woodwork is actually gorgeous. The location is fairly good and puts you central to lots of stuff. We became used to the place during the course of our stay and found it to be not that bad. Wifi worked well which was nice and a somewhat pleasant surprise in a building this old.
We were a little shocked at first as we typically stay in 4 star hotels and hoped this would not be too far below that mark. The reception staff was on break when we arrived so I waiting 20 minutes before I could check in. Things were made worse due to faulty instructions from booking, com which told us that we needed to go to a sister hotel initially to check in (but that's a detail). The staff when they arrived were helpful but seemed inexperienced and all alone! There is no parking in front of the hotel so your car is just on the street which worked ok but some guests struggled. No one to help w luggage but I guest that's the nature of this place. The elevator is ancient but sort of works. Taking the stairs was most efficient if not desirable. The rooms were clean but dated. The windows would not open and close--some I think are painted shut and another had no working lock. The area around the hotel is kind of dodgy with quite a few homeless (although this seems to be a major problem for SF overall). The hotel staff kindly highlighted the nearby no-go zone that is near the hotel which I really did appreciate. So overall, we were shocked when we arrived and stayed only because it was not refundable. After 4 days we found it tolerable enough but would never return.
Kitchen Accommodated 4 people
Liked proximity to trader joes and bus to fishermens wharf. Our room was very spacious and we liked having access to a kitchen. We felt safe with the door code and room key. The staff were very helpful, polite and friendly.
We felt that walking was the only option to union square as we couldnt locate a bus route and it took about 15 mins to walk there- too far as one of our group members had an ankle injury. The number of homeless people around the area around the steinhart meant that we felt unsafe to walk or travel after dark.
I stumbled upon this hotel online and was so pleasantly surprised by its historic character and charm. The staff were tip-top and extremely friendly and helpful. The room was beautiful. Liked the laundry, and it really felt like a private apartment.
While once-a-week cleaning is good, I stayed a week and would have liked additional room cleaning, sheet changes and towels upon request on day 3.
especially the beautifully restaurated apartment and whole building, the spacious apartment, the old elevator
old style building and nice furniture h
no daily services , it is a residence , only one person available part time.
Great location (near Union Square, an area that is not particularly interesting in itself but that is central) Beds were really good Great kitchen
A kettle could be made available in the kitchen
They are all large suites - so loads of space Jonathan at the frontdesk was just brilliant Washing/Dryer facilities for $1.50 was value!
Old and listed style - not their fault BUT wasn't that clear when I booked it and we are family who don't like old things :-( - so a total misfit (not blaming the hotel at all, but description could have made it obvious then I would not have selected this.
It's very well located. And the staff are great. I had something of a medical emergency when I was in SF, and the staff were really helpful. Many thanks to Kristol, Nicholle, Marx and Jonathan.
Close to union square
Good location, staff was friendly and helpful.
very nice, clean room. so kind service, especially a lade in the front dest
Having a kitchen on our city vacation made a huge difference - we felt much more at home in SF being able to whip up breakfast in the morning, or cook dinner and crash after a long day. Location is great - Union Square and Nob Hill are right in your backyard, and if you're an ambitious walker, all of the city's must-do sites and neighborhoods are within a (usually pleasant) 30-45 minute stroll. The building is attractive and generally well-maintained. Spacious rooms - even the deluxe studio. Loved having free access to the fitness center at the nearby Hotel Diva.
One hiccup with the staff: we had been informed a few weeks ahead of our stay that the Steinhart was air conditioned, but arrived to find out this was not the case. We were instead provided with portable fans upon request, which were much appreciated. Many thanks to the staff for being friendly and eager to help upon our arrival, but we wish we'd had better information over the phone about this important detail.
Location close to Union Square. Apartments of another era. Staff helpful.
Some appliances and furnishings a bit tired.
