Location, friendly staff!
We had a queen bedded room and found the bed rather small for two persons. It could have been bigger.
Staff was excellent and friendly, facility was clean, quiet until the following morning (nearby construction at 7 AM) nice lounge area with wine and snacks in evening, basic b'fast in AM
Room was mslaa which was ok for one preson but bathroom was difficule to work with. Nearby heavy construction at 7 AM the following morning was very noisy (they have no control over this of course) No view out room whatsoever.
Size of the rooms.
as soon as we walked through the door everyone was so friendly thanks me and my lady had a wonderful time we will be back. :)
the rooms where kind of small but it dose not even matter everything was really clean and nice classic :)
Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Room size and comfort was perfect. Nightly wine/cheese and on-demand coffee a real plus. Location was great (Just around the corner from Federal Bar).
Not enough accessible plug-ins at desk area. Shower curtains were a bit troublesome but manageable.
Good location, good price, friendly staff. If you plan to hang out in the hotel then this is not the place for you but if you want a comfortable, good value place to stay then we would recommend it. The bed was very comfortable. Better for single travellers and couples than friends sharing.
The rooms are compact which meant that the shower in our room was very small and a little annoying. Also no wardrobe in the room to allow us to unpack.
The staff was fabulous!
Size of room
My wife and I were extremely happy with our choice of the Varden Hotel for our overnight stay in Long Beach before catching a Carnival Imagination cruise the next day. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive, and the hotel itself has a colorful history that we had not expected. The vintage neon sign on top of the hotel, just restored to its original condition and declaring "a bath in every room" (which was a huge deal when the hotel was contructed!), added a touch of real class to the whole experience. Our room was spotless and tastefully decorated ... and the bed was absolutely fantastic. We left wanting to stay again and would recommend the Varden to anyone looking for a great hotel in a central Long Beach location close to all the fine restaurants and sights.
The staff are awesome, the best service we had during our visit to US! Everybody was extremely friendly and accomodating. For example, we asked for beach towels and were immediately provided with ones. Also they have lovely wine tastings with snacks in the afternoons, fruits, tee, coffee and bottled water are available 24/7. The rooms are recently renovated in a very modern style (I loved it!). They are a bit limited in space, by the design is so nice that there is nothing left but to enjoy :) Anyway, you are not going to sit at your room while being on the Pacific Coast...
The room was a bit small and on the first floor, so the window basically faced a wall of the next building, but it is just a minor detail which somebody might care about (we loved everything anyway).
The staff was above the top! As was the management! Very helpful and friendly!
The room was set up oddly with the positioning of the bed and the television in the living space and the relation of the sink and the toilet in the restroom. These were small issues in the grand scheme of things. When this building was built there probably wasn't bathrooms in each room so for that luxury space has to suffer. It was a nice room and did it's purpose for my two night stay.
Staff is what makes this place. They offered assistance with a smile from the moment we walked in, to the moment we walked out.
Staff were outstanding. This hotel is trying, and succeeding, to be different. If you hate chain hotels for their blandness this will be a refreshing alternative.
We were a family traveling through CA and had a fair bit of luggage. The rooms are very small with extremely limited storage. Definitely form over function, albeit beautiful form! The double bed was very small and up against a wall, so not ideal. This hotel would be perfect for a single business traveler, not so well configured for couples or families.
My wife and I liked the location to were we need to be. We also enjoyed the service from the staff. The uniqueness of the hotel is great. Its been around since the 1929 and the all the up dates are perfect and it has a nice feel to it.
Since the hotel was remodeled and keep in its 1929 charm it not very senior friendly. I brought my parents who are in their 70s and 80s. They could have used an elevator and since the rooms are small the bed being close to the wall made it difficult to go to the bathroom at night. My parents loved the charmed, the coffee, its actually as old as my dad but they said its a little past there time. So, if your a senior these would be two things to consider.
Staff very friendly and sweet
a 10 minute walk to the Long Beach convention center.
We could not get out tv to work.
Room was so small, approximately 8 by 12 feet!!
I've stayed here on a few occasions and now I plan this as my hotel when I'm over in the LA area. The staff is so friendly, rooms are put together well. Walking distance to amazing food.
I haven't found anything I don't like yet. $20 over night parking.
clean crisp rooms, staff were very helpful. wine tasting and nibbles and help yourself tea/coffee were a nice touch
rooms are very small
Hotel staff is amazing and very courteous. The hotel is spotless clean and smells very nice. The place is very cozy and everybody genuinely tries their best to make you feel at home. The bed is very comfortable. Location is pretty good and walking distance to many nice restaurants and the convention center.
This is a prime example of when beautiful design doesn't fit functionality. My major complaint is the bathroom area, primarily the sink. It is tiny, but right on top of it there is a shelf. Makes any kind of washing, brushing or shaving activity very difficult to perform without bumping your head into the shelf. The shelf is the only place where you can put your toiletries. There are no outlets in the room conveniently located. Except a small hanging rack there is virtually no additional storage. The desk is tiny and can hardly fit a small laptop and a notepad (no outlets next to the desk). Iron and board must be requested. In summary, the place is beautiful to look at and nice to be there, but if you need functionality and no hindrance to your daily routines as a business traveler, this place may not be perfect for you. For a romantic getaway weekend this hotel would do great.
Friendly and always willing to assist staff.
Super nice Staff, coffee (Keurig), proximity to our destination Beachwood Brewing, afternoon wine & snacks,
A really nice hotel, friendly staff, good location for the Catalina ferry.
Long Beach. In fact I hate Los Angeles and had hoped that Long Beach might not be so bad, but it is. This is a great place to stay if you avoid downtown, or, indeed, avoid all of it and just head off to Catalina,
Convenient location to where we needed to be
Tiny sized rooms Bathrooms are cramped Beds are small only a double and they have to be wedged in a corner, no room to walk around the bed Noise! Walls are paper thin, we could hear casual conversations that our neighbors were having. Over-priced for what you get. Continental breakfast not very appealing.
Very clean and love the free goodies in the lobby
There wasn't an elevator but that was easily overlooked by everything else that was great!
