Staff was not helpful. I needed to FedEx something and they had no packing tape and I had to call and arrange the pick-up myself. My room was not cleaned in the two days I was there-no fresh towels. Overall dingy and kinda dirty. I would not stay here again. My room overlooked an alley and it was loud.
Had a great view from the 4th floor balcony..
Terrible interior!! Very old and Dated.. Not worth the price.. Parking was terrible.. And the service wasnt good.. Overall, it was a learning experience to not pay more for a place cuz you may be disappointed...
Great rooms, amazing building.
Great location right on Nob Hill. Comfortable room. Old SF charm. Free drink on arrival was a nice touch.
Room was clean overall, but noticed dust on door molding. No milk for coffee or cereal at breakfast-- when we inquired, we were told the hotel was out of milk.
Wifi was weak; shower head was too low (I'm only 6' tall); I didn't get the wake-up call I requested for my last night for during my last night; no room service (food)
Coffee maker. Staff.
No AC. Room was small. No bathroom counter space. No fridge or mini bar. No ice bucket in the room.
European shabby hotel room feel. Loved the central location. However. . .
The fan was filthy when we checked in and was not cleaned despite our requests. At checkout, the darling front desk person could not remove a duplicate charge for the rollaway bed. After 30 minutes we left, hoping it was fixed. Don't bother with the breakfast, walk to Chinatown or North Beach and eat there.
Location and old collegiate feel. I liked hearing the cable cars passing my room.
Rooms could use a little attention. No AC in the building which was ok, but our ceiling fan sounded like it was going to shake itself off of its brackets so the room was too hot for me.
Great location and views from the dining room Good value for money
Poor WiFi in the rooms. Had to go to lobby to get decent coverage. Bar not open on weekends
Good size room, clean and tidy character building.
We were supposed to be able to use Wifi but couldn't connect.
location and breakfast
things were just a little tired. well kept and clean but a little past due
Unfortunately our stay here was one to remember....not for good reasons. Upon arrival we found our room unclean with basic supplies not available. Used unmentionables were found in the nightstand drawers from the previous occupants. The shower had mold surrounding the base. The towels were spotted. The furnishings are old and worn which made one reluctant to sit and be comfortable. The windows to the street were stuck open. These things were brought to the attention of the staff and although they were kind, their response to these items was weak and incomplete. Apparently management was gone for the weekend and the staff seemed unsure how to respond to any request. Being awoken abruptly at all hours was our experience every morning and every night at this hotel. The thin walls, squeaky floors and noisy hall ways provided a disturbing atmosphere. This was only topped off by the fire/smoke alarms alarming just after 6:00 AM on Mother's Day morning. They rang intermittently until our check out later in the morning. The staff indicated they were aware of the problem but were unable to solve the problems. The location of this hotel is the best thing going for it, right next to the trolley line in Nob Hill. Even this benefit was outweighed by the constant noise of the sight-seeing filled trolleys that were heard at all hours when the window to the room would not close. As well the WiFi was spotty at best, and was unavailable. The TV only worked sporadically if that..some technical connection issue. Oh well, this hotel needs an entire remodel. Could this possibly be a four star hotel as rated? Absolutely not! Its charm is no longer.
Nice atmosphere, great location, quiet, very comfortable bed, tasteful decor, not too big, classic woodwork, friendly staff
clean, good wifi, nice staff and comfort
too warm in the room
Amazing 4th floor with a very formal sitting room and library of very old books available. View was great. A piano and a pool table. Location was very near China Town.
Breakfast was only ok and I ate out most days. It up the hill so walking back can be a chore. Also, it's on the corner with a cable car track on each street. Made it pretty noisy all the time.
Good location, decent sized room, fast wifi
limited breakfast options, bath too small to bathe in (although fine for showering)
The location is great, the hotel is beautiful (is like a time-machine to the past!), the room was very nice, and the staff was excellent!
Top floor and terrace - excellent. Staff was very accommodating.
The continental breakfast could be a bit more elaborate.
A little frayed around the edges.
Inner hallways are nice and clubby. The interiors are true old-school.
Dusty, cheap bed and pillows, blanket without duvet cover in the normal form (just a cheap sheet under the blanket). Breakfast is also weak. At least place a $50 microwave owen so people could heat the milk or other food. Think how to get better, not only how to save money! Will not go there anymore and will not advise it to my friends.
Great location. Clean. Nice room. Old school.
From and earlier generation. Classic gentleman' s club feel. Wonderful location.
Facility, rooms and furniture is tired. Place needs paint and polish.
old university feeling
no waiters in the morning at the breakfast
I liked that it was "old SF". It was a find...born and grew up in SF, never knew it was there. Old world charm.
Quiet. In a beautiful neighborhood. Close to the business district.
Internet to the rooms was spotty. A router or access point is needed on the 2nd floor. Internet from the 3rd floor was good.
