Getting to Cat Ba takes a long time despite being only 160km from Hanoi. Difficult to communicate with hotel staff as they hardly spoke english. The diner room. The welcome drinks

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The manager arranged a special seafood lunch for our group. They went out and bought the fresh seafood and had it prepared for us. It was excellent. The beach location was beautiful and relaxing. The rooms are simple but comfortable. The facilities were immaculate. We loved the resort and wished we could have stayed longer. It is the best place on Cat Ba island.

It is farther from the town than other hotels but wasn't a problem for us.

Some of the beds were hard - perhaps reflecting local tastes but perhaps some comforters would help? Slightly bizarre encounter with who I presume was the owner in the gym who appeared not to want people to use the machines which were new...

Very warm welcome, all the staff is really friendly and attentionate. Our room was upgraded because we were on our honeymoon, so we had a big room with an excellent view on the bay. The evening of our stay the hotel offered a honeymoon cake, which was really a nice attention. Facilities are very good, beach just in front of the hotel was clean.

As we did not have dinner at the hotel we cannot say if the restaurant is good, but breakfast was OK (buffet), fairly adapted to western style.

A lovely hotel in a fantastic location with good rooms and grounds with a fine swimming pool and its own pleasant beach. The breakfast is especially interesting with a range of chinese dishes as well as the usual Vietnam breakfast fare.

This is a difficult review to write as there are so many good things about this place and we enjoyed our stay despite what I am about to say. Whilst customer service is not great with poor staff English and a lack of understanding of guest needs this can be understood given the relative immaturity of the tourist market on Cat ba and, to be fair, is no worse than many places in Vietnam Less difficult to excuse is the staff's inclination to turn any guest transaction they can into a request for money. The prices in the resort are already high for its class for the rooms, food and drinks but we encountered the following: - On asking directions to some attractions on the island; 'Here is a map - that will be $2 please' ( for the sort of thing given away elsewhere) - After an ok massage in a cold room: please tick this box on the satisfaction survey and give me $5 tip (total focus on the tip rather than the customer's unsatisfactory experience). - On enquiring about a shuttle-bus into town: yes, that would be $5 (for 1.5 km - we ended up walking or getting moped lifts). - On finding out that much better rates were available to walk-ins than we had got just the day before through booking.com: Tough, cancel on booking.com and we will then give you the walk-in rate. - At check-out the receptionist's preoccupation was getting someone to check we had not purloined the contents of the minibar rather than addressing our needs with luggage and onward transport. Unfortunately when one is treated as a source of revenue rather than a valued guest what could have been an excellent stay becomes merely an adequate one.

The food was awful and the facilities tired. Plus the sea water is filthy and either side of the hotel is a building site.

The only hotel on a beach on Cat Ba. The beach is small, but clean. Very friendly and discreet personal. Vietnam is not Thailand, but they try hard to compare to a Thai boutique beach resort. We never ate there. The walk to town (15 minutes) is pleasant and there is a lot of Vietnamese restaurants at much lower (more Vietnamese) prices. Superior rooms have very pleasant balconies. Not very inspired breakfast buffet (typical 4 star), but nothing to complain about. Very good cakes!

Be warned: The matrasses are really exceptionally hard.

Location great, private beach, pool, spa facilities, spacious and clean rooms, nice place to relax for a few days. Our whole family enjoyed our stay at this hotel.

It is the only resort in Catba with any beach whatsoever. Upgraded our room. Staff generally very friendly.

Upon our departure they put us in the wrong van and on the the wrong boat and we had to pay twice for our transport back to Hanoi. They blamed us for this - and said that even though they spoke to the driver and told us what time we were to be picked up and put us in the van - that it was our fault that the driver was actually supposed to collect another family of four (who also apparently had no names to distinguish them from any other family of four - even though they had boys and we had girls). They refused to take any responsibility for this and actually blamed us for the mistake. The food was pricey and very average. The whole town only had one decent restaurant - thank goodness for The Green Mango (also in Hanoi) and both restaurants are wonderful.

Amazing location with beautiful views and a near private beach. Friendly staff and a clean, comfortable and large room (executive suite). Access to boat trips in Halong Bay.

Price was not cheap for Vietnam, although we did go for a more expensive room and cheaper options were available.

We liked everything, even though this is a relatively big resort it is not too aggressive with the environment, right in one of the very few beaches in Cat Ba while still very close to the town. Breakfasts, rooms, swimming pool, everything was great, would totally recommend it.

Maybe a bit pricey compared to other similar resorts in Vietnam, although it is true that this is the most solid option in Cat Ba island so worth the premium!

The location was ideal, on the beach, a short walk from town. The beach and the view were amazing! Lovely pool, comfortable, clean room with ocean view, good restaurant, friendly staff.

We loved everything about the Catba Sunrise Resort. We are two older parents (60+) with adult children (in their early 20s) traveling from the United States throughout Southeast Asia (China, Vietnam, Japan). The staff was incredibly accomodating, arranging transportation from the hotel to the ferry, making sure hotel arrangements in Haiphong were in place, and getting us a tour of Halong Bay where we could go kayaking and see Monkey Isalnd. The walk from Catco Beach 3 to the other Catco beaches is stunning. We had one day of bright blue skies and one night of heavy rain and lightening which lit up the karsts in the bay. The food was superb, the view from the bedroom overlooking the bay spectaculatar. But, again, I come back to the staff. All were so helpful. Thank you Cat Ba Sunrise Resort.

Good beach with pleasant tidal waves, but water is not clean.

No elevators. Staff in the reustarant is not professional. Overpriced.

Rooms were nice, beach was well kept and food in restuarant was albiet quiet. Good location and within walking distance of local area.
