Nice bungalows. Friendly staff. Beach wit coral. Good choice of food. Walking distance to ash field.
Staff and local villagers were genuine, kind, hospitable and very friendly. The village tours were interesting and we felt very comfortable and welcome. The accommodation (authentic Melanesian huts) were fun and comfortable, located on the beach surrounded by jungle. Meals were basic but filling, the banana pancakes were the best I have ever tasted.
The surf at night got loud at times but ear plugs sorted that out.
Remote location, no phone/internet/tv. Places like this may not last long.A real chance to unwind and experience the real Vanuatu. No choice of dining but quality much better than we expected, considering lack of infrastructure. People wonderful. Roads hair raising but great fun!
From New Zealand, we found prices high. We stayed 4 nights ; probably one day too long but needed two chances to see Volcano due to weather
I liked it that the villagers are involved. The visit to Lonasuna village to learn to cook and weave the traditional way was awesome and the people were very welcoming. Great that the money was going straight to the villagers rather than a tour company managed by westerners.
The volcano tour and accommodation is overpriced. The reef in front of the bungalows is thrashed by the locals.
The trip across the island although uncomfortable and cold (back of the ute) was spectacular. The accommodation was of interesting local construction. The location, right on the beach was great. The volcano was awesome, but do rug up, it is cold!! The visit to the village for cooking, weaving and dancing was very good value and really well put together.
Guests should receive prior warning that the airport to Friendly Bungalows transfer and trip to the volcano may be in the back of a ute over some very rough roads. It was uncomfortable and cold over the mountain ridge, bordering on dangerous, but the scenery was spectacular. Transfers are quite expensive and at the convenience of Friendly Bungalows, not according to the paying guests timeframe. We had an unnecessary 3 hour wait at the airport, I suspect so that the driver could conduct business in town before collecting the return guests. At least there was no likelihood of missing the plane!!
Villagers were involved at all levels. This is where you see how the people really live, not the staged village shows they do at Port Villa. The volcano tour of course. Friendly bungalows involves the villagers in running the hotel. They have a tour which shows you how they cook their meals, how to weave mats and lots of local dancing. Friendliest people in the South Pacific. Felt very safe.
The roads are 4wd only, and very rough.
Simple bungalows on a beautiful, secluded beach. Run by the local villages for the most part. Much closer to the Yasur volcano than White Grass. Staff were wonderful - warm and friendly. The traditional cooking experience was amazing, and completely traditional.
Fairly long drive from airport, but through beautiful country with great vistas.
Enjoyed the completely different perspective of the isolated location and communications with the local people in their traditional lifestyle along with moderate technology.
The roads through the bush to get anywhere were something we were unprepared for - the necessary use of four wheel drive vehicles was novel. Got used to it after the initial realization as to how things are in this part of the world.
Volcano tour, john frum tour and the fact the bungalows is so connected to the village
Rats, lack of hot water, not as close to volcano as thought (1.5hrs walk plus extremely isolated from other sites), food was inedible except the bread. Incredibly expensive for what it was. Stayed at whitegrass one nite - although more expensive miles better value
Remote, primitive, beach front escape
No snorkelling gear
The bungalows are so beautiful,as well as the location. It's a project to help local people. People are so friendly there. We had an ungorgettable time eg. on a waterfall tour,we saw the kastom dance in a local village and climbed up the volcano.. Local guide Donald - such a funny, friendly and helpful person. Good food
staff very friendly and helpful. they can organize nice walking tours in the nature.
the ride to/from the airport is very long. I got very anxious on the way back to the airport because the car left very late from the hotel and we arrived at the airport only 40 minutes before departure. They waited for the people to have lunch and then spent also 30 minutes to do the bill.
The people are truly lovely. The island is very beautiful and peaceful but also amazing and enchanting. A truly magical place.
Everything. The staff were truly lovely. The food was amazing, and so nice to not have to choose. 3 courses served up after a day in the jungle was just what we needed. We loved how remote this place is. The bungalows are fab too, comfy and clean. The luxury of this place is in being totally off the grid. The world of work is forgotten! Oh, and the reef is great for snorkeling. Don't get me started on Mt yasur, Wow!!
