The main purpose of going to Franschhoek is to eat in some of the fabulous restaurants. Apart from that there is not a lot else to do and it can be very hot making it uncomfortable just to walk around the village. If self catering there are very good grocery stores including Woolworths Food and a relatively new and modern Checkers. There is also a large Pick n Pay but it is a much lower standard than the other two which are more up market.

We love Franschhoek and could easily have stayed longer.
We love Franschhoek and could easily have stayed longer. We love wandering along Huguenot Street with its many shops and small restaurants and the market on Saturdays and Sundays. We visited Haute Cabriere, Mont Rochelle and Mullineux & Leeu. We enjoyed an excellent lunch in all and had the best wine tasting in Mullineux & Leeu. On the way out we had “high tea” (at 10.30 am) in Orangerie at Le Lude which was quite amazing

Loved Franschhoek but 2 or 3 nights here would probably be enough as town is lovely but small. A great base for doing the winre tram and visiting the various wineries but many can also be reached just as easiliy from Stellenbosch which seemed a little livelier and more going on. Liked the market with drinks and music.
Drivers take note the pass into Franschhoek (the R45 from the R43 or R321) is closed 0900-1700 weekdays until the end of Feb 2024!

Franschoek is a gem!
Franschoek is a gem! Fabulous places to stay, a most beautiful Main Street with so much character, beautiful shops and restaurants, and the Wine Tram. This runs like clockwork and is a perfect way to visit several wine estates without needing to use your car. The estates are fabulous and you stop as long as you like, hopping on the next tram when you are ready!

The wineries around Franschhoek were lovely.
The wineries around Franschhoek were lovely. Would also recommend a visit to the Pigcasso winery - I know this seems weird for those there for the wine and food but for some reason the place is very nice and chill. If you are in town on Sunday, the markets were great and you could get coffee and listen to music.
I would suggest hiring a car particularly if your hotel is not in the main street. But there is a tram which takes you to the different vineyards and seemed very regular.
As to vineyards, we had a lovely breakfast at Boschedal winery.
Everything about The Last Word was exceptional, starting with the manager, Franklin. He was the consummate professional, dedicating himself to ensure every detail was taken care of. Fabulous very comfortable suites, with special touches - my room had a glassed in veranda next to the pool and my son’s room had a veranda that led into a small garden. Very magical! The breakfast was served in a quaint dining room, with gorgeous plates, and was excellent. We loved our stay in this wonderful gem of a hotel
Exceptional - my husband and I stayed for 2 nights and could not fault a thing. The grounds and pool were gorgeous, the room was immaculate and breakfast was absolutely delicious. This was the perfect boutique hotel for our stay in Franschhoek - 2 mins walk to fantastic restaurants and a lovely 12 minute stroll through the lovely town to the wine tram terminal. The staff were all so kind and welcoming, as was the owner who went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. We would highly recommend.
Lucienne and Roel are very welcoming and truly make you feel at home in their beautiful Plumwood Inn! Clean, gorgeous views and the perfect location in a calm street near the city center, with lots of restaurants within walking distance. The Franschhoek Wine Tram terminal is 10 minutes by foot, making this hotel the perfect location for a lovely get-away. Great breakfast included as well. 100% recommend!
Wonderful breakfast with a la carte options and a buffet with fresh products. The level of service is exceptional, the hotel offers a free shuttle service which is very useful if you don't have a rental car like we had. We could also take a shower before our flight after we checked out without paying extra. Location is in the middle of Franschhoek, very convenient. Overall we had a great stay, thanks!
I will definitely return to his property. Beautiful staff and decor! The staff are friendly and accommodating. Yolanda made such a great impression. The breakfast was very good. This hotel is situated in the heart of Franschhoek. You can walk to so many restaurants and bars. There is a pizzeria next to the hotel, making it great for a family.
So happy we booked this hotel in Franschhoek. The hotel is amazing. Loved the rooms. Super comfy beds. Most amazing and friendly staff. The restaurant on site is awesome - we had most of of our meals over the 4 nights there and they were all delicious. The waiters are lovely. The location is fantastic and surrounded by beautiful mountains.
A beautiful & small hotel on the edge of Franschhoek. We were treated very well by the owners & amazing staff and supported us to feel more comfortable. Amazing breakfast was served every morning with 4 different types of eggs benedict to choose from & cold buffet. We wish we had more time to spend here!
Beautiful view over the vineyard and across to the opposite mountain range.
The scene reminds you of the alps.
Various lodges to choose with or without self catering. The game park is an extra bonus.
First class restaurant and wine tasting are on the property but separate and very much worth a visit.
The hotel room was beautiful and the views from the dining / bar area across the gardens looking at the valley to the mountains were amazing. Felt like you were in the countryside when only a 10 mins walk to the High Street in Franschhoek with plenty of restaurants and shops.
Incredible, beautifully appointed boutique hotel in the heart of Franschhoek. Byron, one of the staff members, was superb and simply could not to enough for us to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Lovely breakfast and pool area, would highly recommend.
Fireplace in the room for the cold evenings, electric blanket on the bed, gorgeous bathroom. The wine tram is located right outside the hotel and there’s a gorgeous Italian restaurant attached to the hotel. The receptionist was lovely and friendly!
It was very comfortable, had fantastic views of the Franschhoek mountains, a sheep pasture and vineyards, and we were welcomed with a bottle of wine and several extras. Definitely recommended.
