Decor of bedrooms and main building was very attractive, with sunlit private veranda. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and kept very clean. Food was very good. Continental breakfast was beautifully served with good range. Cooked was available. Dinner menu changed each night to give a good variety of very tasty dishes. Surrounding countryside was beautiful. Great opportunities for walking and exploring the surroundings. The guest guide was excellent; it was obvious that a huge amount of effort and thought had gone into writing it. The management - Anton and Joshua - were extremely friendly and helpful.
Remote location made it difficult to go anywhere else for dinner. Unfortunately we visited during an infestation of small millipedes. There wasn't much staff could do to prevent them and they did clean these from our rooms each morning. However little effort was made to clear them from the communal areas such as the lounge and conservatory which were littered with dead millipedes for most of our stay. There was a general lack of attention to detail eg toilet rolls allowed to run out in the ladies and a broken light above the cubicles there throughout our stay. Waiting staff didn't wear uniforms, which seemed unprofessional in a formal dining setting where waitresses were wearing jeans and hoodies or fleeces. Laundering service took 48 hours, had to be chased on our final morning and clothes were still very damp on return despite sunny weather.
Main gardens were pretty, waiting staff in the restaurant very efficient .
Cottages were a block of rooms with views of the water tanks on the mountain. The place had an air of decay and poorly maintained , the outside sitting area was unkempt and covered in leaves and debris.
I know this property well, and find this very hard to write. I love the area and the setting of Blue gum tree is fabulous. the gardens are stunning.
I thought the place was in need of a lot of TLC, dirty tiles in the bathroom, patio full of debris that could be easily swept. No Fan working on the ceiling but we did get a free standing one. Paint work not clean. We were the only couple their and found it quite a sad place to be.
Relaxed atmosphere and excellent food
Stunning retreat.Excellent staff and warm welcome. Excellent breakfast and very good activities for young children.
Everything!!!! The grounds were beautifully maintained, the rooms were spacious and very pretty with nice personal touches (personal welcome note, memory stick with childrens' movies etc.) The room had a nice patio deck with personal barbeque station and deck chairs. At night we saw so many stars and were not bothered by any mosquitos. The room's information pack even included a constellation map for us to enjoy. The kids had a simple play area with a trampoline and sandbox which they enjoyed for hours! The views all around were just amazing! The main reception/dining/bar/and lounging areas were beautiful too. The chef was impressive, passionate and gave us memorable dining experiences (we made a point of NOT eating out!). The owner looked after us in a particular way. He did with everyone. Even though most whale watching services had ceased for the season, he managed to find us a boat tour and we saw the last whales of the season. I must say, Blue Gum was without a doubt my favourite place in all of our South African trip.
I can't really think of anything.... perhaps the fact that the water on the grounds was taken from underground and had a brownish colour due to the high iron content. It was filtered and perfectly safe, but looked funny in a bath. If you took showers instead of a bath you wouldn't even notice. The route from the main road to the estate was also a bit alarming (meaning wild).... but what a pleasant surprise upon arrival!
Comfortable and elegant, peacefuland quiet. A good place to unwind after a hectic trip with relatives.
Acsess road not good, flood damage and sign post hidden by bushes
Fantastic Food - Compliments to Elsabe the chef ;-) Very peaceful and superb staff
Quiet location - space - laid back- huge room - wood burning stove
