We were originally just expecting a rest stop for the night but we ended up having a fantastic time with wonderful SA hopitality. We had dinner with family and met more SAfricans and were made to feel at home. Superb!!
My only small gripe is that internet was terrible, but that's not their fault either as they are right up against the mountains
The owner was welcoming, a very interesting lady and awesome. She went out of her way to make sure I was OK and that everything was comfortable
Great hosts in a unique location
We chose Emahlathini as a transit stop on our way from Kruger Park to St. Lucia. The drive is definitely an adventure! Emahlathini is hidden away about 15km from Piet Retief and 300m from the border to Swaziland. As we arrived we were greeted by the very friendly owner who showed us around and let us choose which room we want to accomidate (after upgrade of ca. R150 via Booking.com). Also we were offered a beer to cool down upon arrival and rented out fishing equipment and started relaxing by the little sea on property. Emahlathini offers anything a weary traveller could ask for, especially a very comfortable bed and very cute and friendly dogs that kind of just hang out with you. Very recommendable and anytime again!
Nothing negative, everything really very good!
The hosts and the food!
Bad Wi-Fi connection.
Many animals (dogs, a pet monkey, birds, etc.) and a nice view.
Elsie is a perfect host. The place is just next to Swaziland. Beautiful view.
Some people have complained about the poor state of the road from Piet Retief to Emahlathini, but let's be logical here. Our half hour, slow (therefore safe) journey from Piet Retief took us through one of the most breath-taking and awe-inspiring sceneries that we have experienced in South Africa to date. All too soon, our attention was drawn to our guest farm, nestled in the mountains close to the main road. Our hosts, Pieter and Elsie, greeted us like old friends, upgraded our accommodation at no extra cost, and offered the use of their fishing rods, for us to go Bass fishing in their dam, perched on the edge of the complex. We were barely settled, when we were visited and greeted by their menagerie of geese, chickens, peacocks and dogs, who all became an integral part of our whole stay. Emahlathini is certainly recommended for a break away with the kids, and is ideal for a quiet, romantic getaway for a couple - or just a group of friends, as we were. Thank you for the experience!
Not the fault of the owners but the gravelled road towards them was a bit difficult.
The nice reception from Elsie and Pieter, the Flexability of them, the nice Deck on the Lake. Whatever we needed or wanted: they helped us out so nicely.
The road to get there and I would suggest pathways be paved as there is a lot of sand and mud if it rains so you always have to take your shoes off to enter your room, I think this will really make a big difference and will look neater.
The layout and hospitality .
Kitchen was not fully equipped.
Wonderful location, rustic in the mountains near Swaziland Excellent stopover with the border to Swaziland close by Good braai place Nice and friendly owners Very good bed Superb shower Great WiFi for SA standards
What a shame we only stayed one night! Elsie, the host, was so friendly and welcoming and the beds so comfortable that we would have happily stayed a week. Huge rooms, beautiful scenery, great for adults and children alike.
Eating in the room. Would have liked to meet other guests in a dining room or lounge
Accommodation very good and very clean. Nice area. Lovely dogs.
We were very happy with our overnight stay. Peaceful surroundings with a lovely view. Made to feel very welcome by Elsie and her son.
Stayed here a few days ago and we came back for more, this time we had the jacuzzi room (very nice) Elsie made us a South African dish for tea called bobotie, (first time we have had it ) and it was excellent, the servings were more than generous as is the breakfast. My wife especially appreciated that Elsie was more than happy to change a meal - being a particularly fussy eater - to ensure that she too enjoyed the farmhouse cooking.
Excellent location and we were made to feel at home, Elsie and Pieter are the perfect hosts and we enjoyed a few beers late into the evening with them after a delicious traditional South African braai.
My wife and I were served with plenty of delicious food at very reasonable prices. The staff were very friendly and helped us to transport our bags in and out the suite. Everything was perfect...The jacuzzi was the cherry on the cake.
The road from Piet Retief to the farm - a lot of pot holes and in places the tarmac surface has all but disappeared.
Quiet rural location with mountain views and a nice outdoor deck. Welcoming hosts. Spacious and well-equipped room with good kitchen and braai facilities. The guesthouse is 1km from the Swazi border and 20km from Piet Retief. We used it to break our journey from KZN to Nelspruit airport.
Far from Piet Retief, 20 km on a bad road Breakfast not included and expensive Neither wifi nor telephone connection
Nice, spacious and clean room Helpfully lady
(avoid if you are on a diet or bring your own food as meal portions are very generous!)
Elsie &Pieter and all their dogs came to welcome us very warmly. We had our best braai ever, the t-bone was incredibly tender & tasteful. The place is bucolic with a small pond and a hut on it!
The countryside location and the whole getting away from it all experience.
There is nothing I can add here!
A place to 'break away' from your busy, daily routine. If you want to get your head 'clean' is this the perfect place to go! Thanks to Elsie and her family for making us feel at home! Specialy for that outstanding breakfast we had!
The host was wonderfull! He made us a bbq and breakfast because he didn't want us to drive to the shop in the dark
Hospitality was fantastic! Breakfast was excellent, views stunning.
We loved this place. We only stopped over for one night on our way to Sodwana bay but it was totally worth it. Elsie the owner went out of her way to make us feel comfortable- there were chocolates and hot water bottles on the beds, she checked up on us a few times and even brought us roasted potatoes for dinner! The beds are huge and very comfortable, decent bathrooms with hot water Would definitely stay here again on the way to the coast
