View over Durban and out to sea is quite magnificent. Particularly convenient if you have interests on the Berea and very close to the Musgrave Centre.
I recently spent time in a few hotels in Durban area. Essenwood was one of the best in a picturesque leafy part of Durban with homely service. These were truly 5 star services!!
That I could not stay longer!!
Comfortable, secure venue. Lovely hosts and delicious breakfast. Felt safe and secure. Will definitely go back for another stay.
- The view from the balcony is wonderful, - the garden is terrific, - the staff was really friendly and respectful, - the breakfast was very nice, - everything was put with attention in order to give satisfaction to the guests, - the owner makes you feel really comfortable. - easy access to the beach by car.
- the access to the property is a little bit narrow.
If you are the sorts who likes security, warm people around and a helpful friendly host, this is it. the location is away from the city centre hustle bustle, and thus also away from the security concerns which plagues travellers to Durban. It is in an upper end part of Durban and the great food joints are all nearby. Your ever warm host, John, will guide you. Away from city centre does not make it difficult to go around. Easy to call cabs. John will guide you. He is always there. What a wonderful man! Must add a little story. A rare tale in today's world. This was our first pit stop in the 4 city hopping vacation. As we were departing from Essenwood, one of us discovered that the passport was missing. We had already settled our accounts and commercials were closed. As soon as John heard of this, he jumped in. He made us re-check bags. Was on the internet/phone to find our Consulate. He got out his car to guide us to the nearest police station. He was genuinely concerned. Fortunately, a last minute brainwave made us call the airport and we found it there. But John made us realise that virtue is still there. And there are still those who go beyond commercial deals. Way to go John. Thank you. Will be back!
Durban has the beach and an initial experience to South Africa. It is near to Imfolozi game reserve, which is less crowded than Kruger. However, if you have to choose between Durban and cape town - it is cape town!
A wonderfully comfortable and characterful old house staffed by friendly people.
No complaints whatsoever. I will definitely be back.
Friendly, accommodating service, great location and sea view, beautiful garden. Lovely room. Will definitely go back.
Friendly and helpful owners, beautiful views, spacious rooms and bathrooms, quiet location, good breakfast.
It's so old. Needs renovation fast. It's Dark. No butler service. You have to carry all your luggage up the stairs with no assistance. Not 5 star treatment at all. The breakfast was too ordinary. There is a resident dog that loves guest a bit too much.
good location nice breakfast cool garden
no wifi in room only main house BIG mozzies in the room WC not built for big ones
John the owner really kind person the position is ok , in the middle of a a nice quarter breakfast super
Hospitality, view, atmosphere. Everything unforgettable
What a fantastic establishment. Our host could not have been more accomodating and the rooms are exquisite. A little haven in the heart of Durban. As we missed breakfast on the morning of the Comrades, we were given the most delicious soup and bread on our return that evening. What a treat!
Very friendly landlord, "John", who manages the guesthouse. Somewhat british style, lovely furnished rooms. Nice view from the balcony of the corner room over the skyline of Durban direction harbour entrance. Old house but clean. Lovely garden view with small pool.
A little piece of heaven with fabulous staff. The house and gardens are beautiful. Every request I made was met with the reply - of course we can. I do hope to return one day.
Lovely setting and very peaceful.
Staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Comfortable well equipped room. Everything was of a very good standard and I would definitely stay here again.
Great ambience, pleasant owner, room opened directly onto the garden.
Electricity cut out a couple of times - though the owner moved mountains to get it resolved.
