The staff made our stay comfortable and define toy fun! The area offers great game viewing and our game driver and trackers were always on the lookout for where we would see animals. Great experience!
We stayed in a suite at both lodges. The little things were lacking. Everyday the staff should be checking for burned out light bulbs, drapes not hanging properly, the pool being filled and clean. Proper maintenance is part of the daily cleaning.
We stayed at both lodges and liked Billy's Lodge the best. We loved the organic design of the buildings of both places. We loved the game drives and the good food. We loved meeting up with the other lodge land rover for coffee in the AM and sundowners at sunset. We loved a wine tasting evening at Billy's Lodge. We loved the suites and the outdoor showers. The staff at both places were great!!!
The AC and indoor shower in our suite at the River Lodge did not work well and there was not enough lighting on the path to our suite at night. The drapes in both suites we stayed in were heavy and had come loose from the rods in places. Routine maintenance of this sort should be taken care of daily.
The service and the way the staff treats you
The other guests- all that made it tolerable. Leaving
This Lodge failed in almost every aspect. The management was almost never in evidence. Rangers were surly and spoke very little English. They did not answer direct questions about the game we saw and nor offer any spontaneous comments. They also refused to stop when we saw things that interested us such as birds even though we often saw little else. They drove too fast to spot wildlife and often fast enough to risk damaging cameras. After everyone in the lodge complained, the manager did start driving the game drives and he was knowledgable and engaging but he was not around apart from the drives. The food was so basic as to be embarrassing- a choice of vegetable or beef stew for Christmas Eve dinner, a choice of jelly or ice cream for dessert. Food was incredibly slow to arrive and individually plated which meant you ate alone as if you waited for the whole table to be served the food would have been cold and congealed. On Christmas Day they managed a very limited buffet saying the meat choices were chicken, lamb or goat! Goat in fact appeared to be ham which was probably slightly better except for all the Jewish guests who were understandably upset. There was no wine list and they promptly sold the entire stock of wine which we had enjoyed to departing guests even though it was Christmas and there was no chance of replacing. Smoking was allowed anywhere which meant that much of the lodge was out of bounds for non-smokers whilst a party of chain smokers set up residence. I could go on but I think this gives the flavour of it. We discovered that almost everyone who stays there has bought the trip by charity auction which means they may not have researched beforehand. If you have done and can change, I suggest you do so.
