The staff and location
When we arrived, we were taken to a "mountain lodge" or "cottage" firstly we had to walk a great distance on steps to the top. The lady at reception did not know how we could drive up close to the unit allocated to us. We were tired, having driven from Bloemfontein to knysna that day. We were told 2 bathrooms but only 1 had a toilet and the other just a shower and basin. The door to the shower had no latch. The main bedroom could not close. There was a stone behind the door to hold it close. I have a daughter in Knysna and she was coming over to visit us and to bring our meals for the evening. We just lazed around. The TV was not working initially but was corrected. The place had spider webs and insects. Very very poor standard of kitchen equipment and utensils. The bigger shock was when my daughter and her family left we opened the beds to sleep. To our dismay, the sheets were in a very poor condition full of stains etc. we removed the sheets and replaced it with blankets and made do with available coverings for the night. When we tried to complain we got answers like coz it is in the forest you will have to live the insects and spider webs. We asked about the filthy condition about the sheets and the responded by saying that the dampness from the forest causes this. Personally I walked away from the situation because I got sick and was spewing during the night and was rather angry. My family digested that I ho to my daughter whilst they speak with management to either resolve the issue or attempt to seek a refund for the coming night. They changed our unit and we were able to spend the next night there. We drove on to Cape town from there. Even the kids were awake early to get away from there. A family of five ready packed and handed keys before 7am. For R2000.00 a night, it's not an option.
All stated above
Poor service, quality of rooms not great, poor breakfast and overall value for money was poor. The room we were allocated looked nothing like the Internet image
The owner Remy was very helpful. The waitress Naziva was also very helpful.
We had to pinch ourselves when we realised we were staying here! Under the new ownership/management the lodge is thriving. The property is stunning and has the best view of the lagoon. The pool was pristine. The staff are thoughtful and engaging. Remy even took us for a walk around to show us the private forest on the property. The food at Die Gieter (the restaurant on the property) was beyond delicious and comes HIGHLY recommended. Do yourself a favour and stay here. Remy, Catherine and Vincent are incredible hosts!
Bit far from Knysna town itself but good if you want some peace and quiet!
Rooms were spotless and loved the flower pettals scatteredin the room. Everything worked no noise from the road.Owners were extremely helpfull and so sociable and the food was superb.
We had a most enjoyable stay. The staff was very friendly and the owners went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. The restaurant meals including breakfast were excellent.
There was no-one available for check-in when we arrived.
Loved the setting, the history and the French Couple who own the place!!
Delightful French couple Remi and Catherine are the new owners and made us feel very welcome. The rooms were newly refurbished and the forested setting provides a beautiful and tranquil backdrop. From the restaurant called "Die Gieter" one has beautiful views of the Knysna Lagoon. Breakfast which was included with the room, was a generous English breakfast (bacon, eggs, sausage and toast) with cereals, fresh juice, yoghurt, coffee and tea. Other meals were a la carte and an interesting mix of old favourite South African dishes as well as some emphasizing the French heritage of Remi and Catherine. Prices were very reasonable on all meals and the public support for the restaurant even out-of-season is evidence of the locals' approval of good food at good prices.
The tv in the room was not working and only a poor vision of SABC 3. No DSTV or sports channels, you are forced to join the crown in the lobby to whach the rugby which was very annoying and loud or were forced to go to another venue to watch sport which defeated the object of a quiet weekend.
It was in a beautiful setting and the restaurant and deli was lovely. I would back to the Knysna riverside lodge but i would not stay in the cottage. The cottage has great potential if re-done probably.
The cottage was an after thought with none of the light switches matching and the geyser broke so we had no hot water but these things happen. The accommodation was very disjointed. It was clean but had a funny/ mould smell. The microwave had a European plug but no adapter. It was cheap so i guess it is excepted. But I would go back.
The peaceful atmosphere
Friendly staff, comfortable room, good restaurant.
GPS unable to find. Street signage.
Quiet location, nice view.
Sadly, it didn't come close to the web site promise. We left an hour after checking in. It seemed isolated and old fashioned. Desperately needs updating. Sad and unpleasant.
We liked the size of the suite, the facilities comprising the restaurant with friendly staff and the swimming pool. Our suite provided a view of 'Phantom Forest', and we saw Vervet-Monkeys, Deer and Guinea-Fowl.
Wi-Fi was not available as indicated. The suite did not afford the river-view as we requested. Maintenance of the suite was not at the required level: leaking gutter on our deck, ceiling fan inoprative in the bedroom and various light-bulbs were not functioning. We have requested an invoice which has not been received as promised despite further requests.
The restaurant with the hotel die gieter was very good. Overall, a nice couple run the lodge.
The room could have been cleaner.
Rooms very dusty and generally un clean pool was like pee soup light fittings not working general maintenance very poor out door furniture falling apart bathrooms and shower not clean no soap or toiletry bits no coffee or milk in room.for the amount charged this establishment should have been faultless I have stayed at many guest houses in South Africa and this was the third worst, but the worst one we actually stayed at,over all a mark of 2 out of 10 would be a fare score on our experience.
View and location
Dishonesty... one of the rooms did not have a shower. And we paid extra with Bookings for Full breakfast. When we got there we were handed vouchers with a $ limit, then at breakfast we were only offered one selection as the compensation for the voucher and the offering was for less then the voucher was worth totally dis honest and very dissapointed
Welcoming staff, fantastic views across the River Valley, spacious rooms, very good cooking in the hotel restaurant which also had wonderful views, comfortable beds
Very friendly owners
room service didn't happen
Lovely views with nice pools and pleasant restaurant on site
Overpriced unit with very basic facilities and not serviced which is not acceptable at R2000 per day. Unit was musty with hard wooden beds and not suitable for a long family stay - very dissapointing for the price.
Beautiful setting and surroundings and lovely rooms - a wonderful place to relax! The management is very friendly and hospitable and went the extra mile to make our stay memorable. The restaurant, food and waiters are tops!
Very quiet and great restaurant!
The first room they showed us was very dated and worn so they moved us which was alittle better but the place really needs updating.
