Everything....Accommodation and food was top notch. Staff were attentive and nothing too much trouble. Game drives were exciting and productive with Rangers and trackers who were helpful, informative and knowledgeable.
Having to leave!
The Great Fish River Lodge is a luxury resort within the Kwandwe Game Reserve. After checking-in and parking at the Reception building (which is a 5 km drive down the dirt road from the main gate), my wife and I were taken to the lodge in a 4x4 vehicle; about a 25 minute drive. The lodge is first class in every respect; attentive staff, delicious meals and well-appointed rooms. As a large reserve our thoughts upon entering Kwandwe was how would we ever see any game animals. But our guide for our two night stay was Doc, who certainly proved us wrong. From lions feasting on their Kudu kill, to separated Cheetah brothers looking for each other, to a herd of 20 elephants crossing the road right in front of us, the game drives will be memories for a lifetime. With the exception of a leopard (where we only saw its kill), we saw the Big 5; and the tops of hippos that wouldn't leave the water. Kwandwe Game Reserve and the Fish River Lodge are a little off the beaten path, but you won't be disappointed with your stay. Albeit on the expensive side, this is an excellent choice for a malaria-free game experience in pampered luxury.
Everything- best safari by far
We didn't have much time so spent only one day and night at Kwandwe - at Melton Manor. To start with, Melton Manor is amazing and beautifully decorated. We were pampered by a staff of 4 who fulfilled all of our wishes. Everything (good wines etc.) is free of charge. The highlight were the 2 game drives with Ranger Wes and tracker Wussi. We managed to see elephants, giraffes, kudus, oryx, springbok, warthogs, etc. The absolute highlight were 2 cheetahs close up, first watching their prey and then starting to hunt and a white rhino mother with her baby playing. Another highlight was breakfast in the middle of the bush, where Wes and Wussi made delicious pancakes with all sorts of toppings for us. It can't get any better!
The game drives were superb, manager excellent food good staff quite friendly
We were booked into wrong lodge and never notified extreme dissapointment, work being done on Great River Lodge, so stayed one nigh at Eco Lodge, not what we had paid for. Manager was so very helpful and did a good job on moving us next day to Pumba reeserve, superb
Great location, accommodation and Safari. Knowledgeable guides.
We had the impression that the staff, particularly in the restaurant, had not been properly trained on communication and procedures. For example, our waiter at breakfast had to check with the kitchen before advising us on th daily special. At dinner there is a set menu and a choice of two main courses. We chose ours and to our astonishment it was the first thing to arrive. The other two courses had been left out completely. On our final evening safari we stopped in the bush for hot soup and some BBQ snacks. We declined since we did not want to spoil our evening meal. However, at dinner we were advised that only the main course and dessert would be served since the first two courses were already served in the bush. Nobody told us ! We weren't the only guests to be bemused by this. With more attention to details like these Kwandwe could justify its membership of " Leading hotels of the world". At the moment, it falls short.
Staff was great and helpful
