Mine was a booking for a single person. On the booking.com site it said: Standard Double or Twin Room - Single Use. With my booking I requested a double bed. Since I prefer a double bed, I chose Mariu over another guesthouse that only had twin rooms. However, only AFTER the booking had gone through and had been confirmed, was I informed per email that I would have to pay an extra R175 per night for a double bed. I replied that I thought this should have been mentioned before booking, and received the following reply: "The choice on booking.com is not to mean it will be without cost. Single rate is for Twin beds, if you book single and prefer a queen then you have to put it under special requests, on which the guest house will respond to the guest if it is a request to be met with or without cost." I am not convinced by this, and I feel that the offer was misleading, and that such an extra cost should be clearly indicated. However, I am also not sure whether the responsibility for this lies with the guesthouse, or with Booking.com.
Apart from this initial hiccup, there are a few things to be aware of. There is no full length mirror in the room. Although there are many TV channels offered, almost all are Sports channels, I could find no CNN, BBC or any of the regular ones. Finally, the room was not very soundproof. My neighbours were having a little 'domestic' and this was a bit awkward.
Finally, read the small print! This is a guesthouse with rules. When you arrive late (after 7pm), there will be a R250 late arrival penalty. (I have never before heard of such a thing actually.) Also it was mentioned that having reserved a single room, I was not to bring overnight visitors to the room.
In all, although the hosts were friendly enough, I found the guesthouse did not answer to the easy-going generosity that is a hallmark of the South African hospitality industry.
Well organized guesthouse run by a Dutch - South African husband and wife team. Thankfully the husband was on hand to carry my luggage up some very steep stairs!
The room was spotless, with a nice little balcony.
WiFi was exceptionally good and free.
