The breakfast buffet was very divers and of good quality This hotel is completely out dated! Everything in my room was old, dirty, worn out, forced, fell apart....really, you can see that this hotel has been used intensively but now it is time for a serious renovation. I would never go back there in the state it is now. Also, the friendlyness of the staff could be a lot better.

Fantastic central location, in the vicinity of numerous restaurants (incl. The famous Bull Run) and just 10 min walking distance from Mandela Square; the hotel itself is a low-rise bulding set around beautiful gardens with a terrace and bar, giving it very homely look and feel. The fitness room is accessible around the clock. Most international flights arrive in Jo-burg during the morning hours, it is, however, almost impossible to check-in before 14:00 - this can be a drawback fro business travellers. On the upside the Balalaika offers a shower room for guests who have to leave for meetings before check-in time.

The Balalaika was just as I found it when I stayed the previous two times: elegant, old fashioned (without being the least inconvenient) small and deeply personal. It is still polished to first class perfection, but it hadn't changed a bit! Yaaaay! The staff are obliging without being servile, friendly without being phony about it, and the total experience is all that could be desired. The beds are comfy and the rooms quiet, well away from the traffic. This is my ninth trip to Africa and when my destination requires that I fly into Johannesburg (NOT the safest city in the world) I always try to leave an extra day so I can spend two nights at the Balalaika, and do some good Native Craft shopping in Sandton. Plus, the hotel gets me a very good (and very reasonable) driver, so I can go to the Native Craft Market in Joburg. I LOVE the Balalaika! Mary Lou Walbergh Nothing, actually. The Internet was a bit tricky to work, and when I asked about that, the clerk showed me, and then gave me a free hour, to make up for the inconvenience.

Conveniently situated, within walking distance, to the workshop I had to attend and also to the Gautrain station. Friendly, helpful and comfortable environment for someone who doesn't get to jhb that often - the trip was a breeze! The noisy fridge and air conditioning unit in the room was very annoying. I could even hear the air con unit from the room next door.

No mini bar, not even a bottle of mineral water (you would expect that for a 4 stars rated hotel). Some of the furniture is old an worn out. The swimming pool is very small. Definitely too expensive for what it offers.

Great location, comfortable bed, all facilites worked well and the bar was luckily open till quite late... Scenery out of our back window was really poor and the breakfast was overpriced,...they should offer a bed and breakfast rate even if you have to pay marginally more for it...

Petros, the concierge man, is a very gentle person, giving us all the hints and suggestions of what to do in Johannesburg. Ask them to reserve a room for you that is inside the building. There are rooms with its door to open areas, that seem to be very cold.

Fantastic bed and a well-appointed and clean bathroom. Generally, a very nice hotel. Had to walk miles from reception to get to the room. Debit card facilities didn't work Had to pay extra for parking Parking for hotel not clearly marked - parked in neighbouring parking area by accident, thinking it was the Protea parking and had to pay that also. Breakfast expensive for what was available.

Comfortable and classy, friendly but efficient - it feels like home after just one visit. I will come again. Thanks so much Balalaika for a great stay over in South Africa.BOB Bishop fun chick Only your sink plug in the bathroom doesn't let the water away really well. Such a small thing. This you can fix. Smorgasbord Breakfasts are always a bit cool. That is a hard one. When there is nothing to complain about I had to really dig to dream these ones up. Thanks You're doing great Balalaika. The hotel is situated close to Sandton city. We had a 44% discount through booking.com, but the room was also a discount room, it was a dark room at the back of the hotel with big trees just in front of the window. There was no hairdryer, we didn't get towels for 2, no minibar not even bottled water at the room. So the discount did not give value for money, but just a room for which the hotel will never be able to charge full price. This was not a 4 star expirience, rather a 2 star disapointment!
