Protea Hotel OR Tambo AirportCorner York and Gladiator Street, Rhodesfield, 1627 Kempton Park (Show map) Very good, Score from 284 reviews“I was pleasantly surprised at how nice our room was. Very comfortable and modern. We stayed there for one night as we were en route to Cape Town from London. It is very close to the airport. We hadn't organised a transfer so just caught a taxi and used the hotel shuttle in the morning to return. I would recommend it for this purpose.”

I specifically asked prior to booking about the availability of a shuttle. I noted that we will arrive at 11:30 at night from Amsrerdam. Upon arrival we waited 45 minutes for the shuttle which neve appeared. I called the hotel and they said sorry they will not be sending the shuttle. I paid a taxi 300 rand for a 2.7km ride. It would have been nice to be informed upon booking about the services, rather than waiting for 45 minutes with a screaming toddler and a tired pregnant wife. Regatds,

Very pleasant reception staff and excellent transport service from the airport. Nicely appointed room. Tried to shower later in the evening and the water was bordering on coldI. The biggest issue was someone trying to come into my room at 2am. When I approached the door, rather nervously, from a deep sleep, was told he was checking vacant rooms for the following day's intake. He apologised and walked off. Had I not double locked my room, I would have had someone walking in on me. Reception confirmed that the room checking was legitimate but they had given the staff member the wrong list. Seems like a crazy time of the night to be doing room checks. Nice hotel but management need to sort these sorts of things out! Would give it another go, just

Comfortable room The shuttle service did not operate even though I mentioned it on my booking form and phoned to confirm the requirement, for around 00h30. Was not advised the service was not available. A stranger had access to my room in the middle of the night. The cleaner appeared in my room at 09h00 without warning.

You should explain to guests the cost of transport, and how far away from the airport 200 Rands was a lot!

The location. The attempt by Malinda to help sort our some very real problems during my one night stay The fact that I booked and paid for a double superior room on-line, but was put into a standard room instead. The fact that the heating/air conditioning unit was not working in my room.

Cleanliness of Room Organised a taxi with Nlonglanhlala @ reception for 4:30 am the next morning. Not documented in the occurance book for the night staff so they did not know about it. Taxi driver did not pich. Hotel staff had to use hotel transport. Drop off /pick up shuttle bus collection point not accurately described.

We stayed here for 1 night following an evening arrival from Europe. We wanted somewhere close to the airport to get our heads down before travelling on to the Kruger National Park. Unusual design of reception and restaurant area, based on an airport warehouse was novel. Room was clean, modern styling, providing usual expected amenities for overnight stay. The restaurant area seems to be almost a seperate enterprise to the hotel so that having had breakfast I was expected to pay there and then rather than at check-out. A little awkward since I didn't have my money with me at the time!!! The room while perfectly adequate was long and narrow rather than squarish, so a little 'tight' moving around.

It was a very brief visit but fulfilled its purpose very well: a convenient, comfortable and inexpensive place to sleep, refresh and eat before catching an early flight. The transport to the airport does not cater for early morning flights.

Breakfast variety was excellent During the construction of the building the could have used double window glass to eliminate the noise level from the highway. Luckily I stayed there on the weekend

Service. Comfort, style. No shuttle pre 6.15am. I had an early flight, as did a few other guests from same hotel...forced to take cab at inflated rate.

Close to OR Tambo airport. Excellent shuttle service with polite, helpful, drivers. Meal was delicious. Arrived to find that the room I had requested in writing when booking, was not the room I got given. I had asked for a room facing the quiet side (not highway side), and was told that they did not have one for me.

The hotel staff are very friendly and professional. You get free day access to the internet if you book a room. The rooms are pretty clean, look very nice and fancy, and have good amenities. The location is also very good. Not really walkable from the airport, but only a very short shuttle service away (shuttles run every 30 min). Hotel also has coffee/tea always available, along with lemon or lime water... and marshmallows (which do seem a little out of place, but a nice touch anyway?). This hotel is very close to the airport, giving a downside of lots of noise from airplane traffic. Other downside is that breakfast is not included, and the only breakfast they offer is a buffet for ZAR 145.00. That's a pretty expensive breakfast. However, the buffet is very very good.

I liked the discounted price I managed to get through the web. I was very impressed with the airline associated decor, I liked the cargo boxes in the reception area as well as the gas mask in the bathroom. I was also very impressed that I could not hear the planes taking off or landing. The hotel is impossible to access from the hotel, one requires a shuttle which takes a while to drive across to the hotel and back, the shuttle does not cater for very late or very early flights and although I could see the airport from my room, I was unable to get to the airport building without paying a significant fee for a 5 minute drive.

The security person was most personable and kind, and I am in great remiss for forgetting his name. I asked if he had seen any mushrooms around the property after he met me walking around the inside perimeter of the hotel grounds. To my astonishment, he came back with a a fresh Agaricus species for me to examine. Then, when I wanted to walk around the neighborhood, we went on a foray together. He was enthusiastic about learning about the rocks, minerals, and mushrooms we found on our hike. He and a colleague told me touching stories about the pictures in the wonderful book on Nelson Mandela they have in the lounge. The desk clerks were cheerful and friendly and apparently in training on thier own time. They seemed to have a difficult time completing simple requests like understanding the difference between a residential and "yellow pages" business phone book; finding a residential phone book took at least 20 minutes. The restaurant could use consultation about how to turn their food into excellence; not very difficult. The food was edible to very good and reasonably priced.

Convenience from the Jo'burg Airport. Poor Service by Reception Staff. Wake up call not followed through on. Taxi request not attended to. Email confirmation did not show up on Hotel computer! Frustrating experience when already stressed in transit between flights. Web site gives no information on shuttle from airport.
