the person managing reception for the weekend was very inefficient. not available. never at desk. Booked at Avondale. got there and told me booked at Florida which was incorrect.
One particular staff member by the name of Thembi who turned down the beds. very pleasant.
Found the room service slow and a little incompetent. Milk was absent from the tray when it arrived. We had asked for scones with cream and strawberry jam to accompany the tea. These arrived later after a second call to room service. My sister and I love our tea and we were issued with just two little sachets of milk a day. Had I thought of it, I would have bought a small carton on milk and placed it in the fridge - perhaps next time.
Whenever I travel to Durban I stay at one of the Quarters Hotels. It is ten minutes from everywhere and good value for money. I started out with Florida Road but having a bad back, soon discovered the joy of the ground floor rooms at Avondale Road. The beds are extremely comfortable and the bathroom facilities are outstanding. The verandah - wow! Relaxing with a cuppa tea or a glass of wine and watching the world go by. Love it.
We had an awesome stay. Keep up the excellent service.
A minor quibble only: no evening restaurant on site (though there was room service and plenty of restaurants a 15 minute walk away).
Helpful staff; Large, nicely decorated room; Good choice of breakfast; On-site parking.
nothing at all
Booking.com write-up of Avondale Road very inaccurate e.g. says it is 5 minutes' stroll from the beach, whereas in fact it's a 15 minute drive; it's on a main road, not quiet; the restaurant was only serving breakfast; and it's 30 minutes to the airport. Our room at Florida Road was very noisy at night due to the traffic outside and the restaurant was closed for two evenings (Sunday and a Public Holiday) but no one bothered to inform the guests of this in advance. The drainage in our bathroom was very smelly. On our last afternoon/evening, there was a 12 hour power cut - not sure how often this happens (the candle in the room, with proprietary matches that don't strike, suggests it's not a rarity): the emergency lighting provided helped a bit, but a generator would have been better.
When we arrived we were told we had been booked into the sister Florida Road Hotel instead, a few minutes' drive away. Initially irritating, in fact this turned out to suit us better, since it was closer to the eatery-packed Florida Road (where the Butcher Boys is particularly good) - but it was also at a noisy crossroads. It's a relatively safe area of town, handy for the centre and motorway access and for a rage of attractions. The Hotel was really well appointed, with attractive period decor in colonial buildings. The bed was comfortable, the supply of hot water was adequate and there was free WiFi and parking. The staff were generally very friendly (but might need to bone up their expertise on what is available to do in the area and/or put some information in the rooms) and the restaurant menu extremely good. We'd go back, but for a shorter stay than the week we spent there.
Unable to make outward international telephone calls from this hotel during my stay.
Personal feel. Goody Breakfast. Staff friendly.
Rooms were wonderful. Setting fantastic.
Not really a complaint, but they have been duped into fitting high end designer bathroom fitting, none of which actually work properly. A minor complaint in what is otherwise a wonderful hotel
Great breakfast Central location Friendly staff
Our stay at the hotel was fabulous. We enjoyed our stay and I will recommend the hotel to my friends.
