Just a short walk from the center of the city, this guest house is nestled in a lush green garden close to Port Elizabeth Airport.
Score from 12 reviews Wonderful
The room with a balcony facing the sea was very comfortable and spacious.
Breakfast was disappointing. Tables weren't properly prepared/cleaned after use by previous guests. And there were no menus or information about how things worked. For example, we did not realise we could order freshly cooked eggs until we saw somebody else (presumably) ask for this on our final morning. And food was not covered, meaning you were in competition with the occasional fly!
I used to be the broker handling the Beach's claims in the '70's. Biggest treat was crayfish thermidor at The Bell. Delighted to hear Gino is still around. Great reception staff.
Having to leave earlier than planned, but that's how legal things go (postponements)
Pool area not great..cig ends on pool side and pool slimey! Ginger rest fine but bit more creative on snails and kudu!
Everthing was absoluely fantastic - thank you!
The location is superb, very close to the sea and atmosphere very friendly and accommodative.
Good hotel at an excellent location. Opposite of the beach and next to the wharf.
Staff was not especially efficient. Checking in was a nightmare because our booking had not come through. Also with regards to room price there was a lot of confusion. Fortunately this was to our benefit, we paid a lot less than we had booked for. Breakfast is good, but the service is slow.
ًnear the beach . Near board walk
They said 4 stars not true , 3 stars . Maybe!!
The receptionist who checked us in was exceptional. We were over 3 hours early and she checked us in immediately to a different room which was better located. A very good first impression.
I found the staff in the diningroom at breakfast somewhat invisible. Perhaps the diningroom is understaffed? I would suggest that coffee and tea making facilities be out in the open so that guests may help themselves. However the quality of the breakfast was very good.
Very friendly and always helpfull
Staff in the resturants are not well trained . A number of issues: clearing tables , manner in which plates are held (fingers off plate tops). Leaning over guests etc
the food was good
they were not very accommodating at first my husband wanted a room on ground floor, until they realised they gave us the wrong room and we told we had to move after settling in, we then got a down stairs room was not very impressed the toilet was not working well
Parking & porter
Booked a suite. Got a ground floor with no view except of walls with a Jacuzzi that did not work. Rooms were a good size so was safe rest no better than a good B&B. Reception not interested, took phone calls instead of dealing with customers did not act on my wifes notice of Jacuzzi not working.
I liked the location of the hotel and the friendliness of most of the staff. The restaurant was good too
I did not like the room I was given at first and requested to be changed. I was told by the receptionist that she would have to check and call me back. I waited 10 minutes with no phone call. I had to call 3 times until I was told the bell hop would come to change my room. I had to wait another 5 minutes for him to show up although I was just up the stairs. I gave up on calling down to the desk if I had a question or needed something and just went straight to the desk myself instead of calling. Phila was very helpful but trying to get staff to my room was a problem. The room also smelled as though a smoker had been there and they were trying to cover it up with a car freshener. Also the light switches stuck.
Our room was large and had all the usual facilities. It was clean but not very modern. It did have the advantage of having direct access to the pool.
We had asked for an early check-in but it was never confirmed. We then arrived early at 12.00 and reception staff informed us they would need to contact house keeping to find out if the room was ready so we said we would take seat on the terrace and have a drink while waiting. No member of staff come to inform us what was happening with the room we had to keep going to ask them every 30 minutes. Eventually they did give us the key at 2.00pm. If they had told us initially we couldn't check in until 2.00pm we would have left our bags and done something more useful with our limited time, instead of 'hanging' around for 2 hours.
Being given the wrong room that I did not book, very small and no view.they should have told me my choice of room was not available.dissapointed!!
Every thing from food to view and the room was perfect and the friendly staff, not forgetting Mariska they lady I made the reservations with she was very friendly and professional....The Beach Hotel Rocks....I'll be back very soon with my family.
The check in time was a bit of a stress, nevertheless,I enjoyed my stay.
The staff went out of their way to make me feel welcome and a friendly bar in the early evening was a nice change. Room good and comfortable.
Breakfast was not great and only got a coffee just before I left. Self service coffee may be good and staff to clear the tables. In truth a minor issue.
Old fashioned charm
Rooms in need of an update
Locely service, great selection of restaurants and SUPER wine list!
Quick check in All the room amenities worked Fresh fruit selection in the room Restaurant Ginger the menu and the service is so good Breakfast had a good choice and there was plenty of service
Quality fittings Great cuisine Feels upmarket
No hot water in bathroom. Poor bathroom towel quality, not fitting with overall experience.
Room was great, nice view, spacious and staff was friendly and buffet and restauarants's food was great
My shower was for the duration of my stay only luke warm and on three occasions i felt the service could be better on the terrace and the buffet breakfast. it seemed as though the staff forget about you on the terrace. That happened twice and once at the buffet i collected my own coffee after waiting too long
The so called beach view room is to far fom beach
Food at the veranda is excellent and the best address when doing Ironman.
Without working fridge for the whole weekend, after reporting it several times. Apparantly maintenance staff only work certain hours. Not acceptable for a 4 star hotel. Service in the breakfast area was very slow.
Large spacious bedroom and bathroom although lacking in style and character.
Superior room had only distant view of sea across patch of grass and a road. The cooked buffet breakfast was all served cold, apparently due to a problem with the heaters under the trays. Although we received an apology, there was no offer of providing us with any hot food. Staff appeared disinterested and were often unhelpful. Wifi not user friendly, requiring repeated passwords and frequently dropping out. Our worst value for money in a 2 week trip to South Africa, a real disappointment.
Upon entering The Beach you enter another world, one of the small elegant resorts from the 30s. The staff is attentive and professional and the vibe is understated elegance. We were last at The Beach in 2007 and were entranced. 2014 is better!
