Staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, and we felt looked after ... like a member of the family. The thoughtfulness of little extras like mosquito repellant
We were aware of some road noise but not that we couldn't sleep. The shared bathrooms worked, especially that the hotel was very cost effective.
I can't really put my finger on why we enjoyed our stay so much but we did. The establishment is an institution which every South African should experience at least once; a real live museum
No duvet cover, just 2 sheets. Room was dark and uninteresting
The pub is great fun with excellent food and a good variety of drinks to choose from. The bed was so comfy and the room was really spacious and well equipped.
there was no en-suite bathroom so had to share a bathroom and toilet with other guests but at least these shared spaces were clean and tidy too.
Love the new bathroom facilities (I say new, but we haven't been to this hotel for three years so they are new to us!) - excellent! Love the historic charm of this hotel, the service and food is good quality pub fare. The en-suite rooms are spacious and the upgraded, luxury baths, toilets, showers and taps etc. are a perfect mix of modern with old-world charm
Double bed in room 8 in historic part of hotel is a bit creaky and wobbly, and not as comfortable as the twin beds in the other rooms. Didn't use the wi-fi so can't rate it ...
We only stayed for one night but wish now it had been more. The staff were great, the food was excellent. The locals were wonderful too and we were made to feel like long time friends rather than tourists. Just wish we'd been there the previous night for their Halloween party which sounded like a riot!
The hangover I had the morning we left
Good service, lovely old furniture - very quaint! Good food - value for money
willing to assist.
I loved everything. From the time we arrived to the time we departed everything was just perfect. Lucille gave us a warm, friendly welcome and made us feel at home right away. The hotel reception rooms and pub are delightful and everything is spotlessly clean. Our room was magnificent (we stayed in Room No. 1). It was spacious, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The bathroom, too, with it's beautiful slipper bath was lovely. We could not have wished for more (except perhaps a longer stay). We had breakfast in the beautiful dining room, which was beautifully presented, delicious and cooked to perfection. The service at breakfast was simply outstanding. We left feeling we had stumbled upon a real gem. I will recommend the Pig and Whistle to whoever I can. It was truly wonderful. Thank you so much, Lucille and your magnificent team.
Nothing. Everything was outstanding!!
I think its a nice authentic place and felt honoured to stay in the famous pig and whistle.
We were there for Grahamstown festival wich I understand is a busy time bur it is very annoying when other people come in at 1 or 2 o'clock in the mornings on the noisy wooden floors and beds creaking in the rooms next door. You can hear every movement which of cause wake you and keep you awake.
Quite clean and easy going.
Cleaning took a personal towel from my room to have it washed without my knowledge and I had to look for it on the day of my departure (two days after having communicated this to front of house) - Although I appreciated the idea of a clean towel I feel that communication could be better. Two mornings there was no electricity in the room where I was staying.
Nice vibe. Pub and food was good.
Managers 'take it or leave it' attitude. We appreciate antique furniture, but worn out old matress was poor.
The staff and food
Good food ,good decoration great ambiance
Noise of bar
This place is great for the value and it is a great old building.
The flexiability of staff and friendlier environment.
There was no water in the bathrooms in the morning, despite the staff confirmation that breakfast starts at 7h30 in the morning.
Bathurst is an interesting but small village and the hotel is in the centre of village life. Live music in the bar was good and not intrusive. Good value for money.
It's a very old building and therefore presents some problems but reflected in the rate. Fish for dinner was inedible but replaced with good grace. No wi fi.
The hotel is historical and beautiful
Stopped for the night,. The pub is charming and pleasant rooms on the first floor. In spite of rooms being upstairs from the pub the rooms were quiet. Supper was above average pub food. Breakfast not available.
Good location for stopover. Value for money was ok.
The staff at breakfast seemed annoyed. We also had security concerns at night as the level of security seemed very low generally. Overall slightly run-down atmosphere.
Felt like we were at home It was our anniversary and they gave us free champagne and really helped to make the evening special
