This place was horrible. It was so dirty. The windows were broken. The toilet was broken and super dirty. There were bugs everywhere. Would never recommend it to anyone.
Good parking Helpful staff Quiet despite being busy Great ambience Clean Great use of iconic old trains Kids with baby liked everything
Dad - bed a bit short Sabie - one toilet door latch broken Area under train could do with a clean up
Close to everything in the city.
I stayed here because of a special price and the location.
good location and low price
It's ok for 1-2 nights, but not more
Experience train hotel. They had a good pub etcc
When there was no hot water facility no one told the guest. They were also not apologetic about the fact that there were no hot water.
No power point to charge mobile devices.
The staff and the cleanliness as well as comfort it gave me the peace of my mind.
The facilities not having the toiletries such as soap ann towels
The cleanliness left a lot to be desired. Newspaper stuffed into openings where the windows would not close. No locks on bathrooms or toilets. When asked about a refund, the staff member on duty was unsure how to do that - had to wait for the manager the next day. Will never recommend it to anyone.
Staff seriously wasted our time by informing us,upon arrival, that they had booked a function for 250 students at the lodge. They then tried to book us into another lodge with exactly the same problem.very poor service
-Very noisy. A whole bus load of people were partying till the early hours of the morning. - Bathrooms were dirty and the ones in the actual train didn't have seats or door locks. - When arriving back at the lodge after a night out the receptionist was fast asleep in the lounge in front of the tv and failed to open the door for me. I had to break in through a window just to be able to go to bed. - Overall hygiene and cleanliness is a problem - The walls need a wipe down - The bedding was ripped Unacceptable!
Both times I was charged more than what I booked for. And was just plain ignored.
Bar n parking area
That I only booked three nights and got.
I'll start this by saying I've stayed at some horrific places before, including a room in India where the "mattress" was a large bag filled with sawdust & 2x4 pieces. So I do not say this lightly, train lodge is hands down the worst place I've ever stayed. The logo for train lodge says established 1999. And while I do not doubt that, I do doubt they have updated the facility at all since. Well aside from the single wifi router, that contrary to what it says here is hardly available in all areas. Hell, it is hardly available within 10m of the router itself & there is no refunds for this overpriced add on, even when you can not connect at all. The room I stayed it had a broken window & the toilets in the car my room was on no longer had working toilet seats. I also had to shower far away, as there was no hot water available in the car I stayed in. There was also no soap in any of the fancy liquid soap dispensers, you know the kind that you are proud to show your guests. Well some time between installing them & know all the pride died. And that pretty much sums up this place. There is no pride anywhere to be found as there is simply nothing to be proud of here anymore. After paying 250rand a night they still expected me to rent a towel, like it was an awful by the hour hotel, which by the prices they are charging is clearly not what they are going for. Only the helpfulness of the staff sure does seem this style of guest is what they desire. I asked three of four times about tourist things to do in town and the only advice I could get was "I can call you a taxi". For a place that clearly is geared towards tourist consumption, this is unconscionable. And for a place called the train lodge, you'd think they would not nearly break out in hives when you asked if you could get there via public transit.
The whole idea to retire some sleeper trains into a travellers' lodge is excellent.
At time I stayedm the place didn't seem to be as popular with travellers as with local school groups.
Novel concept Cost--value for money Location
No air conditioning Wi-fi not working in the rooms
Close to transport
Shower was not hot
Twin sharing rooms are exposed to extreme heat in the summer. Hardly any space to move and need to be revamped. No airconditioning and curtains kept falling off when trying to open the window to get some fresh air in. Definitely not the kind of accomodation for people over the age of 50.
Staff we're trying their best.
Dodgy location. Obscure people walking past throughout the night. Noisy trains passing next to the lodge. Expected more comfort for the amount paid for a single room.
beds are small and rooms are hot.
Staff were all good and kind
It is insanely hot and cramped. I only stayed one day So am expecting a refund for second as I cancelled Second day on arrival I was told this would be done. Please advise.
Interesting place.. staying in train coaches was comfortable. All facilities available.
No Air conditioner in the twin sharing rooms. Gets hot in the afternoon as we went during summer.
We'll priced. It's a nice place to stay in if you booked it intentionally.
No body told me I was booking a train. I thought I was booking a room. The pictures shown on the website are a bit misleading. The hotel should be more transparent with their customers.
The idea of a train station, complete with train coaches, turned into a hotel/backpackers. The location is also good. Even though it is in the city, it was quiet.
I shared a double room with a friend, but the room was claustrophobia-inducing small.

Cold water shower Small room Their canceletion policy - no refund even if you have to leave three night early. After length negotiation managed to get 25% of 3 prepaid days.
