A Stately Home for LionsThe 1st UK stately home opened to the public, Longleat House is most famous for the fantastic safari park in its grounds. Dating to the 16th century, the house is still lived in by a noble family, but you can visit many wonderfully decorated rooms housing antique furniture. Highlights include the huge library with over 40,000 books, and a blood-stained vest worn by Charles I during his execution. Within the 900 acres of grounds are a maze, children’s playground, and magnificent gardens landscaped by the ever-prolific Capability Brown. However, the main draw is the huge Longleat Safari Park, whose most popular inhabitants are the lions, descendants of the park’s original residents back in 1966, at which time it was the only drive-through safari park outside Africa. Longleat’s pioneering spirit continues today, and it is at the forefront of UK breeding programmes for gorilla and giraffe, just 2 of the more diverse animals that now call the park home.
