Rydal Water

This crystal-clear lake is perfect for a waterside wander. There’s a path that skirts round the banks, winding past William Wordsworth’s old house. Here’s a tip: for the most atmospheric walks, head down just after sunrise, when the mist still hangs above the lake to create an intoxicating air of mystery.

There is a choice of paths running alongside this lake giving wonderful views of the lake and surrounding mountains/hills. For much of the way there were grassy wooded slopes full of bluebells and other wild flowers. It's a tranquil area.

Location superb. WIthin an easy drive of either Ambleside of Grasmere. Dove Cottage literally just over the road. And a 1K walk, crossing a bridge over the river, took you to the top of Rydal water and any number of paths for walking beyond that. Breakfasts excellent Riverside garden which was very nice to sit out in.

Breakfast was delicious and the serving staff were lovely. Our room was beautiful with a four-poster bed and plenty of space. Everything was maintained to a high standard. The location is wonderful, with fabulous views and an easy walk down to Rydal Water or through the grounds of the hall and gardens just up the road. Ambleside and Grasmere are both within easy travelling distance by bus or car (or walk if you have the energy). You can see badgers feeding in the grounds at dusk!
