Kamikochi is really beautiful!
Kamikochi is really beautiful! Surrounded by many mountains and has rivers/streams/forests too. There are also a lot of informative boards around that provide more details about the nature/environment around e.g. types of trees, altitude, geography info. Many signs around so you won't get lost too. Kamikochi is quite popular as there were quite a lot of people around when we went. I would recommend going early so you can have a leisurely stroll and see many areas around kamikochi without worrying about the time.
Do make sure to check the weather forecast beforehand. We postponed our trip to kamikochi by a day because it was raining the previous day. When the weather is clear, the mountain views are really amazing! The temperature can be quite variable, it was really cold in the morning (around 10 degrees celsius?) when we reached at 7+am, but it gradually became warmer and got quite sunny and hot towards noon (around 26 degrees celsius?). We went in late June. Anyway, so do be prepared for both cold and hot weather on the same day, ideally bring both thin clothes and thick jackets. A cap would be really useful for blocking the sun too, because it can get really bright.
Most of the tracks are relatively flat and easy to walk on if you don't intend to climb the mountains. It is quite a nice and relaxing trek around. Do still wear sports shoes for a more comfortable trek since the ground still tends to be soil and sometimes with rocks around. It's a nature area so do expect that there will be some insects around, they don't pose much of a big problem though. Around kamikochi there are many spots around that are good for sitting down to rest, some with tables too. For us we also brought onigiri to eat for lunch, which is good because we can choose to stop anywhere on the way and eat. Of course, do bring your own trash bag to keep the trash first!
Enjoy your trip to Kamikochi :)

It’s close to the train station and lawson next to the hotel. Direct Bus to kamikochi is 3 min walk and there is a supermarket on the same buildings as the bus terminal.
Amazing guesthouse in a wonderful location. The rooms have a specific style reminiscent of old Japanese style. First time sleeping on a tatami, it feels like in a movie. There's also a little Onsen included for 300¥ extra. It's a great accommodation after returning from a day hiking in Kamikochi. The personnel are very kind and do their best to accommodate any request.
Mind that it's a small mountain village at the gate of a national park, so plan your timetable wisely.
The best value in Japan! The included dinner and breakfast was among the best "Japanese" meals we had. This is an authentic lodge, with exceptional attention to customer service. If you have already done the Tokyo/Kyoto/Hiroshima tourist thing, Kamikochi should be on your list in your second trip to Japan.
- Very close to Matsumoto station just walk across the street. Alpico, bus office (to Kamikochi) located next door to the hotel. Can walk to Matsumoto castle and other focused areas.
- Nice mountain view at the dining room
- Friendly hotel staff.
Everything was fantastic and very beautiful, clean and stylish.
The manager gave me a few good pointers for my hike in Kamikochi and I am already looking forward to my next stay
