Kind of hard to encapsulate this! 2 day stay of a whirlwind car tour of all of Brittany then off to Paris. Great starting (and ending) point for a tour of southern and western Brittany.
Being the capital of the Brittany region, Rennes offers a vast choice of activities to travelers, despite its relative small size. It is extremely easy to get around, as one can easily walk the city center and the bus services (STAR) are very reliable, clean and punctuate. Price ranges in restaurants are quite affordable, offering very good quality as well. Solo travelers may enjoy a tasty galette the historic center or attend various events on their hobbies (for instance, I enjoy board games and I attended a couple of related events). The locals are very friendly and welcoming, providing a great experience to tourists. Overall, recommended!
The Cabeston restaurant was delightful. There are not many restaurants open in the evening in Carantec out of season and it appears that all of France is closed on Mondays!!! Think you really need a car for this part of Brittany. There is a bus but it is only once a day.
Roscoff is an historical port in Brittany. The architecture of the buildings is stunning as many of them date from the 16th Century. As you stroll around the town and the port, do look up - you'll see many carved faces and animals where you least expect to find them! There are plenty of restaurants at prices to suit all pockets and tastes. The beaches around Roscoff are absolutely stunning - lovely expanses of beautiful sand and amazing rock formations. There are interesting towns and places to visit which are not too far away and you can find something to do at any time of the year. Enjoy your visit, we certainly do every time!
Not the biggest of towns , but that's how we like it . Plenty of things to do in the area , and a good base if you are house hunting in Brittany . The market is not huge but adequate , with hot food stalls aplenty .
The Fest Noz , which happened to have taken place where we were there, was absolutely wonderful, people in their regional attire, coming from all over Brittany, dancing for several hours in the square in front of the cathedral. You can see Breton dancing on the internet. Seeing it in person is captivating. The music, the choreography, the unity of all the dancers (there were about 500 of them, in costume, each group attired differently, representing a Breton department (each dept has a number, something like a zip code). Quaint, picturesque city. Charming to the nth degree. Many interesting restaurants, creperies, shops and stores. Friendly people. One of the quaintest small cities in France.
Exceptional city of character and charm- medieval buildings, the street down to port is one of most beautiful streets ever, enjoyed shops, artists' galleries, excellent food. Two very nice restaurants to try: Carberry in historic center and Las Terraces down at the port. For those not driving: after arriving at St Malo on Brettania Ferry from England, we took bus into Dinan from St Malo and then bus /train combination leaving Dinan for other parts of Brittany- public transportation network is excellent.
Great first night after flight from western US. TGV from CDG was convenient and relaxing. Rennes is easy to walk around, and the buildings, squares and landscaping are beautiful and fun to explore, especially early in the morning. After enjoying cafe et croissant, a short walk to catch TGV onward to Brittany coast at St Malo.
Vannes is a wonderful city to stay to explore the Gulf of Morbihan, Carnac and The Brittany coast. The old walled town has a wonderful charm. People very friendly. Try the local sardines.
We spent one day in Rennes at the end of several days in Brittany. It does have an old center, fun to walk around, but to us very cool thing is this is a real living city and not a tourist place. Many people did not speak much English so we got to experience something a little more off the beaten path. There is a lot of very high-end shopping if that is Your thing.
Dinan
This was our final night in France and what a wonderful place to end our Brittany road trip. The room was beautifully appointed looking straight onto the River Rance. I was a bit worried that we were directly above the restaurant but it was absolutely fine. All the staff were very friendly and even though breakfast wasn't until 8am they ensured we could have an early one in order to shoot off to catch our ferry. We also ate our evening meal there (make sure you book!) which was delicious! We would love to return and stay a while longer.
First of all we had the suit. The room was absolutely gorgeus. The view was like from a postcard. The whole hotel looked very recently renovated and very tastefully decorated. You can have a dinner in gastronomic restaurant or just have something small on terrace. Both delicious and with wonderfull views of red rocks. 10 minutes walk to phare. Out of the 5 hotels we had in Brittany this was definitely the best experience.
Excellent hotel although the look from the 70s gives doesn’t look too promising. The staff is very competent, very friendly and the breakfast, especially for the price, outstanding. Very clean, we are looking forward to staying there again when finishing our cycling trip through Brittany. The shower could be a challenge if you are above 2m but that’s the only negative aspect I could think about. 😀
Vannes
The facilities are superb. But the staff was exceptional. The best we've experienced! When we had to depart before breakfast they prepared a delicious take-away breakfast. The restaurant is also truly exceptional. The cooking was original and truly outstanding. This was the best hotel and dining experience I've had in many years. A must stay for anyone visiting Brittany!
Just fantastic. Ultra cleen rooms and french ladies doing the room service. Breakfast was delicious and for a breakfast in France really a lot!. Real good coffee, nothing out of a big machine, but brewed classical! Balcony overlooking the hot spot of Brittany coast. Will come back again. The short extended weekend trip was perfect because of this hotel and people working here!!!
A wonderful hotel in the harbor of Cancale overlooking the dramatic ebbing and flooding of the tides ... a reminder of the circular nature of life. We had dinner at the hotel - oysters, of course, followed by a risotto with coquilles St. Jacques ... a great treat polished off with an excellent bottle of wine ! A highly recommended stop along the Brittany Coast.
Well equipped, cozy little appartment on 2 floors. It was November and appartment was very quiet (it may be noisier in the summer months). Location is about 30 mins walk from Dinard centre but we came with our bikes which is ideal to see the area. Good small kitchen and Internet TV with Netflix (good for rainy evenings in Brittany!). Reserved parking place for 1 car.
Comfortable quiet room with everything required for a good night's sleep. Very clean throughout. The staff were kind and helpful and cheerful! Good value continental style breakfast. Carantec is a lovely place well worth a look if time permits. Location 20 mins from Brittany Ferries at Roscoff. Will stay again when next travelling to France from Plymouth.
Really pleased with our choice of an apartment to stay in Vannes for a three night visit this area of Brittany. Spacious, very well furnished (very comfy beds) and good location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Not an obvious choice for where to stay when on holiday but very pleasantly surprised.
We stayed at the Hotel Atlantic for one night after a trip through Normandy and Brittany and wanted a reasonably priced hotel a short walk from the train station. It was a very good find, and is also a quick walk to the metro station to easily access all the main sights of Rennes.
Fantastic hotel so clean. The breakfast was really good and the check in facility is very good. Key card given out of key box. Hotel is sanitised to a high degree. Lady in reception was friendly and attentive. Would recommend to anyone visiting this part of Brittany
Dinan
We arrived at the the hotel on bikes as we were doing a cycle tour of Brittany. The Guy at reception was very friendly and helped us the park the four bikes securely in the garden. Hotel is very nice and only a short walk to the centre of Dinan. What a lovely place.
Amazing property. I would call it a Boutique Hotel. The decor, the extreme attention to detail in every aspect of the room. I would recommend this to any person visiting Vannes. This is the best property I have stayed in during my holiday in Brittany.
We had an apartment on two floors with a big bed on second floor. The private spa was very nicely made. Breakfast was one of the best we had. The staff was very helpful and gave us not only restaurant tips but also awesome traveling tips in Brittany.
We were upgraded to a larger suite. For an older building in France I was pleasantly surprised about the size of the room. It was larger than the other hotel and chamber d'hotes we had stayed at while in Brittany.
Intra Muros, Saint Malo
The apartment was excellently located with a great view on the sea. Round the corner is good Crêperie and a Boulangerie. April is usely a cold month in Brittany but the heaters in the apartment did their job.
Cancale
This was the most comfortable stay during my trip in Brittany. The apartment is very close to the port, it is very nice and convenient, everything has been thought about. Would definitely stay again.
Good solution for visiting Rennes or stop by while travelling to/from Brittany. The hotel can be easily reached from the highway and offers a free parking. Good place, clean, cosy. Recommended.
The room was a suitable size. The breakfasts were sufficient. The sea views from the bedroom and hotel gardens were good. The location was suitable base for motoring tours of west Brittany. Quiet.
Concarneau
The apartment is perfectly located to explore the nearby attractions in Brittany. Close enough to walk in to Concarneau centre and there are a couple of nice restaurants on the doorstep.
