눉We did not have enough towels in the room and could not find an obvious way to get in touch with the reception (but I just had to have a wander around the corridors and enjoy being a bit nosy looking around, and the first person I found was able to help me, so no complaints there at all). I also thought it might be useful to have some information about the castle's history in languages other than English. But all, we enjoyed an absolutely fantastic stay.
눇Simply very special; not like any other place I have stayed in. The moment we entered the gate the magic started, and everything became even more colourful and lively when we were given a tour of the castle full of interesting stories. I was slightly anxious about staying in such an old building, thinking it might be not very comfortable or it might be cold or damp, or full of creepy crawlies, but there was no need to worry. Both my elderly mother and young child loved the stay, which was made particularly special by the welcoming and helpful staff. Oh, and loved the Jacuzzi bath, too.

눉We arrived near to the end of breakfast service, with 25 minutes to spare. We were asked to wait whilst a table was set and provided with tea in the old Chapel. Brilliant so far. However, when told the table was ready we found the breakfast room to be absolutely "un-ready". Our table had not been set, no condiments, no plates. Other tables had not been cleared, and this made the room appear shabby and unkempt. The buffet breakfast had all but dissappeared, plenty of beans and sausages, but no bacon, black pudding, mushrooms, and the fried eggs were like bullets. The cook did offer fresh eggs, and they were lovely. The toast we asked for came after we had finished breakfast. Service in this area needs serious attention as it totally detracted from the overall experience. This castle is a fantastic place to stay, it truly is a lovely, welcoming, comfortable, building. The staff are excellent, very welcoming, very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. I will mention two that make the time here memorable, Shay who made us so welcome, and Sean the butler, who is a great person to talk to,and eager to please. The rest of the staff are just as good, and the owner, Sally, is a joy. Thanks to you all for a memorable experience, sorry I didn't enjoy the breakfast room, but hey, things can only get better. Would I recommend Appleby Castle as a place to stay? Absolutely. Where else can you stay in a real castle, steeped in history, on its own private estate. Stay in an historic 4 poster bedroom, have drinks served to you by the butler in the Great Hall, enjoy private fishing, walks, a tour, and enjoy the beautiful town of Appleby. All for less than £200 a night. I will definitely return to Appleby Castle, it is a wonderful place.
