They entrance and reception area are exceptional, but behind the scene our room was very tired and dated, windows let in draughts, room very cold we had to sit with coats on until heating came on late in afternoon, curtains poorly fitting and old, bathroom dirty with stained and marked tiles and dirt around the WC. Food serving cabinet was thick with hard grease around the tiled area, swimming pool had rusting metal steps and rescue hooks and dark stains running down walls from above.

Location was very good slap bang in middle of City Area free parking

Lovely room, our room was looking out over the shops and International food market. Nice big bath, modern smart tv, radiator was nice and warm on a cool evening. Great buffet breakfast, plenty of choice

Nice quiet location, would have loved to find out about the history of the building as the breakfast room was so beautiful. It was good to know my car was behind huge locked gates overnight. Single room was ok, but there always seems to be some compromises in a small space, vis tv at wrong angle for the bed, easy chair a bit threadbare, but it was all fine for an overnight break on a long journey to Scotland.

The shower was a bit cool for my liking.

Great hotel in the heart of Carlisle. Good parking at the hotel. Easy check in and the rooms were comfortable and clean. There was a great choice for breakfast from pastry to a full English. Dietary needs were catered for.

Overall the hotel was cold, our second replacement room even though the heating was working the windows had a terrible draft and we could hear the wind howling all night with very fresh cold air entering our room even after closing the windows.

So we had chosen the Crown & Mitre as our final stop on our Honeymoon, we wanted a central location which this certainly was. On arrival the car park was not the easiest to park in but this is to be expected when at the back of a city centre location but it was free which was brilliant. Our room was very cold and small out dated and after putting the heating on it never warmed up. The tv had no Chanel’s the room wasn’t very clean overall we were very disappointed, after my wife went and spoke to reception they explained they could come and look into the issues in the room whilst we went out for dinner. On arrival back to the hotel later that evening the receptionist gave us a new room key with free upgrade and so we moved rooms. Our new room was spacious, modern, warm and very impressive. The view from the room was very nice looking across the city, the bed was very comfortable and in the morning our breakfast was superb, hot and fresh great choice with very friendly staff. Overall the staff sorted out the original issues and made our stay very welcoming. I would definitely stay again.

The annex I stayed in is under refurbishment and reconstruction. There was no lift - OK for me, but not for others? The room had been nicely refurbished, but the public areas hadn't been done yet and were a bit threadbare and still smelt slightly of stale tobacco. I'm sure that this will improve as the refurbishment proceeds.

Room was clean and comfortable, staff were friendly and really helpful. Other facilities were good. The hotel is in a great location, right in the centre of town and close to most things you'd want to see.

The shower wasn't particularly powerful, making washing longer hair more challenging. There were a few stains on the carpet in the room which were noticeable, but the carpet was clean, so more aesthetics than a problem. Due to the old nature of the windows, which I do love for the charm & character, there was just a bit more dust than I'd have expected around the frames. Although when your curtains are shut, you can't see it. I realise these are nit picking, we really enjoyed our stay & would definitely book again.

The location is fantastic. The very centre of town, gives access to so many opportunities. The building is very grand & beautiful, oozes character. The club rooms were great, nice comfy bed, light & airy room. Lovely bathroom. The breakfast was delightful. Fresh & topped up regularly with the option to order off a menu as well as the buffet. Some tasty vegan sausages too!

This is a grand old hotel with some fantastic architecture, behind the frontage it is a bit tired but honestly does not detract from a gem in the city centre
