We booked mainly for the spa faculties and when we arrived the steam room was closed and the pool was closed for 50% of our stay. The reasons were explained to us but no compensation offered. Also after we checked in I tried to book a table in one of the restaurants, I waited for the staff to finish their conversation and the lady who then tried to help me with the request seemed annoyed that I had asked! (Small moan but was very noticeable)

The hotel itself is really pretty and the grounds are lovely. The person who checked us in and gave us a welcome drink was so so lovely!

A lovely hotel for a short break with great food and drink

The room I was in for the first night became unbearably noisy first thing in the morning, as it seemed to be above the power room for the spa. I requested a change of room which was done swiftly and with no hassle at all, which I really appreciated. Personally, I think that a stay in a higher-end hotel should never require you to use ear plugs (especially in the countryside), and so rooms like these which have unfixable problems should not be sold.

The hotel is beautiful, with well-furnished and spacious bedrooms, lovely grounds, and comfortable public areas. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. My friends and I ate in Yu restaurant, which was delicious, and we all used the spa. A couple of us booked treatments, which were great. The breakfasts were also reasonably priced with a good selection. Highly recommended.

We may have missed this due to not booking directly, however I did also call to confirm we could bring our dog after filtering for dog friendly hotels on here, and was not informed of the cost. We paid £30 a night to bring our teacup chihuahua which added up for a 3 night stay. It’s great that we could bring her and she could go in the main restaurant even, but it was a bit of a surprise to hear of the £90 charge on arrival, this should maybe be clearer on booking.com. Our room looked out onto car park also which wasn’t the best, had to be careful with changing when the curtains were open, this might be where the dog friendly rooms are situated as we heard another dog next door. The website mentions options if you are coming by public transport including a taxi company - book this in advance! We arrived in Hungerford (4 miles away) and after calling every taxi company we could find on Google, managed to secure a pick up for 2 hours later. Taxis also cost an absolute bomb, £20-30 a time to go 2/3 miles only, so bare that in mind. The hotel is lovely though and of course part of the appeal is being remote. There are two electric bikes you need a motorcycle licence to use, we would have loved to use them if we had known but didn’t bring licences with us.

The staff, although you could tell a lot of them were new, were really lovely. The outdoors pool was beautiful, the water is tepid but we had good weather for March and really enjoyed outdoors swimming in the morning. The treatments were nice enough, expensive but we were lucky to go when they were offering a free salt float session with every treatment booking, I hadn’t tried this experience before so that was a great touch and helped me justify the expense of a massage! The pantry offering free coke/juices/popcorn is a brilliant touch. We really enjoyed the lunch and dinners we had and they were a reasonable price considering the location. We did not have a car and taxis cost a bomb, if you are in this situation and want other options for meals we had an amazing roast dinner at the five bells in Wickham (45 minute walk), we walked to kintbury where there are two pubs in same time (just had a drink.. check their kitchens are open on weekdays!) and we got a recommendation for the recently reopened halfway house pub which is very close, but unfortunately they were closed on Monday/Tuesday.

I would have preferred a warmer water temperature in the hydro spa pool. There were no slippers/flip flops in the room to wear to walk to the spa from my room in my gown. There was no phone in my room so I had to walk to reception to order room service (in my pyjamas).

Lovely decor, friendly staff, good food, nice personalised touches, boutique luxury feel. The pantries with complimentary drinks and snacks are a very nice service.

The mattress was firm. It’s ok if you like a firm mattress. The windows rattled a bit but easily fixed with some paper. The first room we were allocated was dusty and had the bed spread had a stain. We reported it and the staff were so helpful and relocated us.

The location was excellent. A country getaway with beautiful views. The staff were amazing and the spa was excellent. I had such a lovely relaxing stay.

Nothing really, I wish I could’ve stayed for longer. If I were to change anything I’d say the heated outdoor pool could be hotter for winter days and it would be great if slippers or flip flops could be given out to guests for their stay.

Beautiful, cozy hotel with excellent food, spa and service. I was skeptical of the mixed reviews about service quality at first but I had a positive, speedy check in experience, my room was ready and was given a quick tour of the property. I had the best time here. The rooms were in a quiet area, the pantries were really convenient to get snacks and the beds were really comfortable. The welcome drinks and the complimentary drinks in the room were great too. The food in the restaurant was tasty and fresh, and good service despite some reviews. The spa was everything I was looking for. I had one of the best massages of my life. Would highly recommend the treatments here. The indoor spa area was relaxing and the outdoor pool had a great view - a great escape all around from the city.

We had trouble with the toilet in the room, no maintenance team available, receptionist came along a tried to fix it, but the water ran all night! Not great to have a working loo - in morning at check out reception asked if it was sorted. I said it wasn't but was thanked for notifying them. No recognition of the fact it wasn't working or fix during the evening by them.

Great location, super friendly team. Great with the dog. Early check was great.

A beautiful hotel with lots of excellent extras and good food, but a few bits to improve
    • Leisure trip
    • Solo traveler

    • Stayed 1 night

I did enjoy my stay but there were a few bits that were a little disappointing which would make me rate this 4 rather than 5 stars. 1) noisy room - my room was right by a busy thoroughfare, I completely understand a little noise is reasonable but at night I could clearly hear conversations outside my door and even a dog barking late into the evening. I mentioned this to the receptionist at checkout and was met with little apology or empathy. 2) long wait for cooked breakfast - I do completely understand it was a busy Sunday morning but I waited 40minutes for my eggs benedict; which then was relatively average. The cooked breakfast seemed an afterthought to the amazing buffet. 3) the gym was disappointing - small and pretty hot. In addition, the access to the outdoor pool is through the gym which meant wet people were walking through and leaving puddles. 4) the spa changing rooms were incredibly cold!

    1) beautiful both in and out - clearly a lot of work has been put into the interior design and it is a lovely hotel with some formal spaces and then some cosy nooks for reading. 2) lovely little ideas e.g. a map of local walks, ability to borrow welly boots and small pantries with free snacks such as biscuits, fruit and drinks at all times of the day. 3) the outdoor pool and hydrotherapy pool were clean, had plenty of loungers and were a nice temperature. I'd definitely recommend a morning dip in the outdoor pool - lots of birds including pheasants to be seen. 4) I ate in the Atlas Room for lunch and my club sandwich and mini doughnuts were absolutely delicious. My highlight of the evening meal was the popcorn cauliflower - would recommend. The breakfast buffet was excellent - lots of choice and presented beautifully. 5) staff were mostly incredibly helpful and friendly; especially those working the restaurants. There was a big birthday going on the night I was there and despite this, they maintained an excellent level of service for the other guests. 6) very comfy bed. 7) I was able to book in to one of their yoga classes before I checked in - excellent class with brilliant teacher.

My only small issue was that my room had no wardrobe or full length mirror, but I was only there for one night so it didn’t really matter, it might have been an issue if I was staying longer.

The property was very well presented, warm and welcoming. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the pantry in the corridor outside the rooms was a nice touch, offering complimentary soft drinks, water and snacks.
