The room was comfortable, exceptionally clean and with a great view of the walled garden. The staff were courteous and helpful. There is a regular bus service to York from the end of the road and so we were able to travel into the city without a car.

The main building is just stunning and the staff were all lovely without exception. The spa is really nice and it's a lovely walk into York. Also one of the best breakfasts I've ever had.

Timeless and classic. The aesthetics were traditional and in keeping with the property but didn’t feel old if that makes sense! Lovely to have experienced staying in a national trust property.

There was a draft through the gap in the sash windows. It was particularly windy at the time of our stay

Fitness center was a bit small. Room was a bit chilly until we figured out to turn the radiators on.

There was nothing not to like, other than having to leave to come home.

Such a special place to stay as part of only 3 National Trust hotels. Cosy, classy and warm accommodation, professional and friendly staff, superb food and service. Excellent all round.

Beds were too soft, and would prefer duvets to sheets and blankets. TV was too low on the wall.

Our room was quite small (we are big people) and the bed, which was very comfortable, took up most of the space. Next time we’ll spring for a larger room.

The hotel is beautiful with lots of space to sit and relax with a drink and a book. The restaurant is exceptional and good value for money. The wine list also was very comprehensive with a great choice of wines at all prices.

Stunning property, feline wed stepped straight into a Dickensian Christmas story. We were upgraded to the four poster room which had its own Xmas tree & was stunning. It wasn’t great weather & we spent a lot of time in our room enjoying it. The restaurant food was delicious & the service impeccable. We also used the spa facilities & my massage was fantastic.

The only consideration is getting into York. Quite a walk. There is a bus stop outside going both ways, but the outbound to York is across a busy road on a fast bend, so be careful!

Rooms were clean, and in period with the house. Breakfast was amazing and service sterling The staff were kind, helpful and friendly, and the porter very knowledgeable!

This is a very special hotel. The setting is incredible, in a building with a rich and fascinating history. The staff were all wonderful and attentive to everything. Every employee was really concerned about helping us enjoy our stay. There is an excellent in house restaurant, although it is not hard to get a taxi into York centre (~£7) if you want to explore places that are a little less high cuisine.

Although the food was excellent, the vegan option, which was very tasty, (dhal and mushroom risotto) was the same price (62 pounds) as the set menu and we felt this was disproportionate.

We really liked the Spa. And your Ukrainian waiter.

The drinks were very pricey! My bed although comfy & very clean had a dip in the centre of the mattress.

We were given rooms almost next to each other which really helped . The rooms had everything that we needed. The staff were helpful & friendly. The `communal sitting rooms` were calm & classic, like being in a stately home. The spa was quaint with its cottage entrance.
