Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomLate check in times meant we had to stay an extra night, they are very booked so no chance of an early check in. We also expected a car park on site due to the description, but had to pay for parking in village car park, which was a bit annoying. Would have liked fuller toiletries too we only stayed two nights and shower gel had run out.
Four poster bed was a dream and the bath was a welcome surprise. Gorgeous location and staff were friendly and accommodating. They were really dog friendly and being able to have dinner in the pub made our stay super easy. Very spacious rooms with tonnes of character, you real feel like you’ve stepped into another world.

United KingdomUnfortunately check in was either before 3pm or after 6pm. A message to let us know that beforehand would have been helpful as we arrived at 3.15pm. I'm sure it's written in the blurb and I missed it but it meant we ate and drank in another establishment before checking in and that is money we would have happily spent at the Ye Olde Smuggler's Inn. Unfortunately, after a day's walking and having already eaten, the late check in time meant we spent the evening showering and relaxing upstairs in our room. The bathroom was very luxurious. Unfortunately, the water temperature in the shower seemed to be scalding hot or freezing cold but this was our only other complaint. 14th century buildings can be tricky though and we were understanding of this
Lovely personal welcome to a really charming old English pub with rooms. The landlady couldn't do enough for us. The room was beautiful and very comfortable for 3 people. She was especially accommodating about our early start the following morning and left us out some breakfast to take away with us to eat later which we really appreciated

United KingdomThe breakfast was very disappointing. It was just a help yourself breakfast, laid out the day before and there were no staff to take dirty plates away. We thought it was very poor.
It was a lovely old pub and the room was nice and a decent size with an ensuite.

United KingdomI’m being picky, the bathroom door was squeaky! No more than you would probably expect in a very old building but a bit of oil would have sorted.
Just what we were looking for in a pub location, exceptionally welcoming, a very homely place, nothing was too much trouble. We had a great meal on the Friday night, breakfast was informal and very flexible.

United KingdomThe water temperature in the shower and sink was only luke warm. Breakfast could have been better. There were cereals and toast plus some bananas and apples . It would have been a nice touch if there had been a cloth on the table.
The inn had a lot of interesting history. It was a pub downstairs and accommodation upstairs. The room was lovely and warm and clean and had tea /coffee making facilities available. The room was interesting with a sloping floor and a lovely view of the village decorated for Christmas. The stairs are a little steep and bend round so not suitable if you're unsteady on your feet, however they add to the charm of the place. Also in parts the ceilings and door frames were low so you would need to be careful not to bang your head if you are tall.

United KingdomBreakfast could be better - we found mould on the bread! It was very loud in our room above the bar so I am glad the pub didn't stay open late - but it felt like a genuine olde inn atmosphere.
We loved our bedroom with the sloping floor, and we loved the whole building with all the doors everywhere. Lovely views from our room, and such a feel of genuine history! Had a lovely dinner too.

United KingdomAs with the other reviews, we felt that the breakfast options were a little limited and thought that it wouldn’t take much to make the breakfast more enjoyable. Having said that, it was still perfectly pleasant.
Welcoming and comfortable. The room was spacious and well-equipped and the pub is perfectly situated in the centre of beautiful Alfriston.
