The shared toilet was on the floor below and, because I was ill, it made the situation stressful, especially in the middle of the night.

I became ill on my second day. Ai who was in-training was exceptionally helpful and tried to make me as comfortable as possible. I was so appreciative of her efforts. I wish her well in her training. The food was also exceptional.

    Nothing, this ryokan is perfect.

The room was absolutely beautiful with a stunning view of the river. The staff were very helpful and kind. The enjoyed the onsen and the meals were delicious, and they were able to make vegetarian food for us.

No private bathroom. I understood this going in and had no problem with it but mention it because I think a lot of people would not be ok with this.

Just a wonderful visit! Extraordinary service in an historic and beautiful property. Onsen in the building!

The water of the public bath was too hot for me. The food was good but I expected a bit more from it. At some parts the building needs a bit more care. It is a little expensive for what it is.

The view from the room. The yukatas. The staff.

I loved everything about it but would not recommend to visitors seeking luxurious accommodation only and not interested staying at an historic property.

This is a wonderful historic inn, structured as a series of buildings around beautiful gardens and including a series of indoors thermal water pools inside the property. We visited on a weekend and the guests seemed a mix of foreign visitors and Japanese. The location is walking distance from the village and the train station, but Fukuzumiro feels out of this world. You are not just getting a room, you are paying for a full experience and in our case, since this was our first visit to Japan, some much needed instruction on the etiquette of the onsen, the food etc. I recommend getting the dinner too which is delicious and an experience in and of itself (will be served in your room by an attendant) and trying the Japanese breakfast in the morning - if you are just a little bit adventurous food wise it is worth it!

The traditional futon style floor bed was a little hard for me, but I got used to it by night two. You might want to ask for extra layers or padding if its too hard for you. I also wish there was one more seating option inside the room to use during the day as the bedding gets rolled away each morning. but all of this is minute compared to the overall amazing experience I had :)

This was a truly amazing, unforgettable experience! Stayed here two nights as a solo traveler and it was the ultimate R&R with a beautiful room overlooking the river, kind and attentive staff who go above and beyond, five onsens including ones you can book privately, and delicious traditional meals at breakfast and dinner. I was a tad skeptical about the shared bathroom at first, but honestly it was never an issue - i never saw other guests, never had to wait, and most importantly it was always clean. The location is a short convenient walk to the town, and well connected by local buses to Mt Fuji and other nearby areas. I can't wait to come back one day!

The only hiccup was there was no hot water available on the first night stay. They had it fixed by the second night though. And also because of this, they gave us a discount on dinner. Instead of paying 5000Y pp they only charged 3,500Y pp.

The traditional Japanese breakfast was super delicious. And the traditional Japanese dinner even better. We loved the kaiseki experience at Fukuzumiro in a wonderful traditional setting.

Boiler and shower was unfortunately broken during our stay, but it was a minor issue because the hot spring water was still available and plenty warm. The staff generously discounted our room rate as well.

Kaiseki and breakfast were delicious, private onsen was very relaxing, serenity of room, futon and blankets were very comfortable. Our attendant was also very patient with us, communicated well in English, and answered all our questions.

The facility is very quiet - perfect for us, but it could be difficult with small children.

Hakone can be a bit tiring to get to (or it was for us). If you’re arachnophobic this may not be the stay for you as joro spiders are incredibly common in the region and—while not dangerous—once you see one you realize they’re everywhere in the trees outside. It’s a big adjustment from a traditional hotel worth it for one night!

Dinner and breakfast were lovely and the staff were so kind. Loved the onsen experience. Very unique and completely recommend! I found the stay incredibly relaxing and the views were gorgeous.

The dinner and breakfast were very manifold with a lot of variations, but I expected a bit more sophistication. In total a bit of renovation is necessary for the ryokan, some areas are just too old or just too long untouched. You should be prepared that the facilities are shared, you don't have your own one.

Very relaxing ryokan with a beautiful charme, one feels like in old good Japanese days and the time stops - it simply stops - never felt such relaxed.

Our stay at Fukuzumiro was one of the most unique and wonderful experiences of my life. We were in Japan for two weeks on honeymoon and were recommended this traditional ryokan by a friend. I'm so glad we stayed because it was an incredibly special experience - from the moment we arrived and exchanged our shoes for slippers and our travelling clothes for traditional yukata, we felt like we'd stepped into a different time. The room and the whole building are spectacular - all wood and paper panels, tatami mats and screen doors, right beside a beautiful flowing river, up against the mountain - it looks like an old Japanese painting. There are several onsen hot spring baths available and we were able to book a private one (just put your room name onto the list in the foyer, it's really easy). It was so luxurious and relaxing, and after this we went back to our room where our kind and attentive hostess laid out the most incredible multi-course meal for us. Just try everything - each dish is more delicious and exquisite than the last. Our futons were very comfortable and the sound of the river lulled us into a deep sleep. The next day we opted for the Japanese breakfast which was almost as extensive as the dinner, and another onsen session. This is a real VIP experience and a taste of old Japan - worth every penny.
