눉The room was much smaller than we expected - part of this was due to a large room divider in the room that took up a lot of space unnecessarily (it did not add much to the ambience and took up much of the little space that there was). With our baggage, a desk, the divider, and the futons laid out there was basically no space left without walking on everything Being an old building the walls were literally paper thin (seeing as the door was paper), and you could hear conversations in the hallway as clearly as if they were in the same room. These two combined meant the room didn't feel very private - our futons (the only place we had any space) was right next to the door and it felt a bit like a school camp - like people could keep an eye and ear on what you were doing if they really wanted to. Also, our room was right by the front of the inn, so cars across the road would occasionally throw their beams directly into the room (the frosting on the windows did not stop the light). The street light lit the room dimly (not enough to keep me awake though), and you could see the shadows of pedestrians as they walked right by the window. When I was getting undressed in the evening, the light in the room threw my shadow onto the window - I don't know if my silhouette was as visible from the outside as the pedestrians' were from the inside, but I did feel a little like I was exposing myself a little to the poor Kyoto populace! Please note that these notes mostly pertain to the one room we were in (ground floor economy room?)- some of the other rooms did look to be larger and nicer (the one we booked was the only one available at the time) and may have been completely fine!
눇The staff (especially Yoshi-san) were extremely helpful and friendly. Yoshi-san took time to make sure we were settled in well. It was also great that they provided tea and a kettle in the room and had no curfew. The shared bathroom was a nice traditional style which was interesting. The building is apparently very old and with a bit of creativity you could almost imagine the place as an inn back-in-the-day! This might be of interest to history enthusiasts who might be looking for a more authentic experience? Despite the thin walls, after closing hours everyone actually stayed very quiet, and sleeping was not an issue.

눇Very friendly and helpful staff. Machiya Inn is of 120 years old but has been maintained in good condition. Bus stop is within walking distance. Highly recommended for visitors that want to experience traditional living culture in Kyoto.
