Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

New ZealandThis is a very special and unique place. Not everyday you get to stay in a 150 year old rykokan. Ono is an attentive host who lives in the room next to the accommodation. Keep in mind you will all be sleeping on the floor in one room and you will need to go outside to find the toilet as with the kitchen/ dining area.

United States of AmericaThe bathroom and shower were small and in order to get to these facilities you had to use sliding doors which were very loud. Also the location wasn’t the best, it’s kind of tucked into the middle of a neighborhood at the end of a street.
The gentleman staying at the property was very nice, he gave us some free food for our stay. The sleeping area was pretty nice as well. There was also a garden with an open roof in the middle of the house which was pretty.

United States of AmericaI can't complain about anything, but being such an old house comes with inherent quirks. To use the bathroom, you have to exit the room, and if it's cold, it might be a bit uncomfortable for some.
Staying in a traditional house in Kyoto is truly thrilling. It extends your experience in the area to 24 hours. . Mr. Ono was incredibly attentive and helpful to us. He made sure we lacked nothing each day, even leaving umbrellas at the entrance when rain was forecasted.

FranceHouse well located in the old district of Kyoto (Gion). A large traditional house. Very clean, well-heated, and quiet. For lovers of traditional Japanese houses. You should know that this type of house in terms of noise level is not well insulated and the bathroom, toilet, and kitchen are outside (you have to go out into a small courtyard). But the house has a lot of charm and its owner is very welcoming. You can even try on the beautiful traditional handmade kimono presented at the entrance of the house.

AustraliaOur family (2 adults, 2 kids - aged 11 & 9) loved our experience of staying in a 150+ year old traditional Kyoto home/machiya (traditional Japanese wooden townhouse). Walking distance from Gion sites and Kiyomizu-dera. We had a large bedroom with traditional tatami floor and comfortable futon bedding, a dining/kitchenette room, bathroom, and a small traditional Japanese garden. It was great to have a more authentic experience than the standard hotels, especially for our children. Clean and comfortable stay!

United KingdomThe overall cleanliness was lacking in places and the property could do with a good spring clean. The host can speak very good English, but his understanding is not quite as good. If he laughs that means he doesn't understand...
This is a fantastic window into traditional Japanese living and I cannot recommend it enough. The host was always available to help, provided water and breakfast every day and was very entertaining. Great location and value for money for family of four.

JapanMr. Ono is the most attentive host I have ever had. He made my family feel so comfortable with his generosity, seeing us off with a wave everytime we left. You can tell he takes great pride in hosting people in his beautiful traditional house.

United States of AmericaBathroom was fine and clean, but could use a remodel.
Fresh fruit every morning! Lots of space, beautiful traditional space. Host was gracious and helpful, really went the extra distance to help forward baggage and help us with restaurants. Our rooms were cleaned every day, beds made and he even dried out our shoes overnight after a rainy day! The neighborhood is SILENT. and the location IDEAL.

AustraliaThe bathroom is on the smaller side, if you are a taller person, it is not easy to move around in.
The host was very nice and accommodating. The house has "character", being a kyo-machiya. The room with the futons is also fairly large compared to hotel rooms in Kyoto. The location is close to the Miyagawacho district, there is an opportunity to spot maiko on the streets
