Wilpattu National Park, 41000 Pahala Maragahawewa, Sri Lanka

눇The setting in the jungle is very relaxing, lunches and dinners are an experience as they are served in the wilderness; at night one can sit around the fire to chill and relax. The food was delicious and the service excellent. Another big asset of the camp is the staff who were extremely nice. We had booked a safari and had our own car, driver and naturalist; we saw a lot of animals and even were lucky to spot a leopard (although from quite a distance). We also went on a (complimentary) mini night safari and were amazed how many animals we saw.

눉Tents, bathroom and mosquito nets could be in better condition...basic ongoing maintenance would raise this score markedly. Mould on canvas may be too picky given these very tropical conditions but staff cleaning floors and bathroom sink need more training. Sadly, within Wilpattu park, there is lots of rubbish and no use-able toilet facilities at the common lunch area. As tourists, we need to keep encouraging all tours and safari camps to pickup/bring rubbish out especially as we all want to benefit from this (currently) beautiful wild park. Note, reason for overall score being below 8, although the previous manager had taken time to greet and brief us, he was just leaving for another Eco Team camp. Unfortunately the new camp manager did not meet us at all, so we were not checked out properly. This left payment issues that could have been easily avoided. Sadly this decreases the staff score who all, bar this person, were wonderfully responsive and helpful. We sincerely hope that the Eco Team senior management (who we only just discovered have multiple Sri Lanka activities) can keep up the good work of those who are staffing this Wilpattu site, especially since trained helpful staff are a valuable resource in a country where tourism is re-building and can benefit the local economy in a good way.
눇The naturalist guide and the driver on safari were excellent...so much depends on their expertise working as a team especially if this is your main reason to come here. If we could have included their rating into the score, the total would have raised above 10! We recommend staying at least 2 nights which permits a full day tour that accesses the park interior whereas half-day tours cannot. This gives time to actually enjoy diverse wildlife and minimises competitive jostling for position around the rarer animals. In our case, Savanganissanka shared his amazing in-depth knowledge AND enthusiasm not only during the safari but also on an early evening walk on our arrival and then the next day after the drive (not to be missed) an amazing night walk joined by 3 other guides all on-site (birds sleeping in trees like christmas ornaments, rare lori and more). The kitchen was also superb with their dishes graded to 'chillie tolerance', tasteful setup of different eating locations under the night sky and even driving into the park with fresh hot dishes for lunch during the day safari (unexpected!). Note, good size bed width even for a tall person (so no need to ask for additional bed, if 2). Good electric fan for heat and functional ensuite toilet with running water so can't complain about lack of hot water.
