Each review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

I would say the staff could be a bit more understanding and helpful. There was a bit of a sense of a “school teacher” vibe with them, strict rules with NO alcohol after 8 (I’m 30, I can have a beer after work), no food in the room and didn’t let me back up stairs to the kitchen after checkout (not even for a cup of my own tea!). I think it was due to the guests being more on the younger side, that said you feel private in your own room.
The room was comfy, I had a separate room so can’t comment on the dorms, although they looked tidy when I walked past. The free breakfast was good, I didn’t have any as I had my own to get through. Also had free look but didn’t have time to make use of that (gutted)

Hi ,I’m the Scottish guy who turned up without photo I.D. on Wednesday. Many thanks for allowing me to stay the 2 nights I had booked. I realise that it was unusual for the establishment to allow this so really appreciate accommodating my request. This is the 3rd. time I have used/stayed at the Hostel and would have no hesitation in recommending the establishment [and next time I’ll be sure to bring my photo I.D. Regards. William

fridge could have been a little more "organized" and fresher. Can understand why not but not drinking tea in rooms was very hard. No teapot )-: (used a saucepan) Light activation for the bathroom was so so.
the location very central to most tourist enterprises. The most annoying part of the city was the parking. And for the ON TOP backpackers but you did have parking from6 pm until 9 am. Also little known back entrance/exit that eliminated the use of carrying a heavy suitcase the distance. The kitchen was clean but the fridge could have been a little more "organized" and fresher. When it's raining, in the bathroom it's wet because there is a leak.
The staff is friendly, you are close to the Intercity bus and everything you need.

No hand soap in bathroom for 2 days. A bit of oil, salt and pepper in the kitchen would be nice.
The pool area and bar are amazing and the music selection of Blues and classic rock were sublime. The rooms are modern and well heated. Had a private because the prices are very reasonable.

Breakfast is served a little early so we missed it which was disappointing as was looking forward to it.

The shared facilities were not really clean. It may be kind of noisy at night.
It was well located in the city center, we could go everywhere walking. Room was not quite big but enough for our stay. They have nice common spaces, both outside and inside, although at some times they can be quite crowded.

Boy racers on the street were noisy on Friday night, but there was nothing the backpackers could do about that. I have no other complaints. When you stay in a backpackers, you have to be aware that there are young, enthusiastic people staying there and a boisterous evening of socializing can happen near to your room. Earplugs helped.
The location was very close to my conference and the room was clean and perfect for me. The showers were hot. Having a bar downstairs was nice because I could have a beer and then walk upstairs to my room.

The location is excellent. 5 min walk to the Octagon and main shopping street. Staff friendly and welcoming. Beds comfortable and facilities very good.

The only issue was that one of the plugs in the bedroom didn't work.
Fantastic location! The Octagon is about three minutes away, so you're in the heart of Dunedin. The bedroom was small, but the bed was comfortable. The room was surprisingly quiet, too. The private bathroom was clean and well laid out.

There was no air conditioner or fans in the bedroom so it was very hot during the day. Also no curtains in the high windows so the light would come through
