6621 Thirlane Road N.W., Roanoke, VA 24019, United States of America

눉The door stuck--had to put my shoulder into it to get it open. The interior, while spacious, was spartan--flooring was faux-wood vinyl instead of carpet, which rendered the ambience sterile and echo-ey. The free WiFi did not work as advertised on the property's in-room literature; it required a password that the property did not provide and the front desk did not have--I had to call an outside help number to retrieve it. Soap was provided but no shampoo or even Kleenex--I admit it's been some years since I've patronized a Motel 6 (though I'm old enough to remember when their rooms actually cost $6) but I'm practically positive that these usual amenities were included back in the day. And I've never encountered a motel room sans carpet before--plenty of thin, crummy, stained carpet, sure, but always carpet nonetheless. I mean, I get why they'd see easy-care vinyl as a practical cost-saving alternative, but still. Finally, I was awakened at 5:10 in the morning by an altercation on the balcony/walkway outside, raised voices and banging on things--including a bout of loud, furious banging on *MY* door. I found myself suddenly thankful that the thing had been so difficult to open. Not wishing to get involved (it being 2016 in America, one never knows when gunplay might ensue in any given situation) I hunkered down until the ructions subsided. In the interest of fairness (and assuming, with the benefit of the doubt, that this sort of thing does not occur regularly) I've attempted to divorce my feelings about this incident from my ratings for the property, which come out slightly positive, overall. That does not mean I would ever consider staying here again.
눇It had what I was looking for -- low price and easy access off the interstate. Normally when traveling with family over the past several decades I have gone for the mid-price chains with the free breakfast and so forth, and more recently, as empty nesters, my wife and I have tended to indulge ourselves with more upscale boutique properties and B&Bs. But on solo road trips I revert to my old ways of seeking the quick and cheap. This fit the bill. One pleasant surprise: the room was huge and incorporated the biggest motel bathroom I've ever seen--with tub AND separate stand-up shower. There was a good-sized mini-fridge. The single king bed was adequate. The room was in reasonably good repair, and was clean.
