A gorgeous old castle and pousada with a garden full of orange trees in blossom and giant cypresses and sycamores. Add to that the breathtaking scenery of Portugal’s countryside that you go through to get there and it is a trip that must be made. Absolutely perfect !

The village is worth wandering round with a pretty square with views of the castle. We stayed in January so there were very few guests. The staff were really lovely and breakfast was good.

It was really relaxing and tiny Alvito has a welcoming kiosk which serves drinks in the main square. We had a delicious dinner in the courtyard as swallows swooped overhead in the blue sky. We liked all the local produce and Alentejan specialities - and the wine was good and very reasonable. We'd definitely stay again.

Restaurant had real good food and wine. staff where very attentive. all splendid.
