Stayed at a hotel 10 minutes walk into Ely, the weather was extremely windy but we enjoyed the walk. We found quite a few quirly shops plus alll the usual high street shops, a few cafes and few places pto have a tea or coffee. We were surprised that the local carparks were free … what a bonus.
We walked around the cathedral and were amazed at the beauty of this truly amazing stricture.
We can recommend the Minster Arms for an evening meal, where they offer good food and ample servings.
We only stayed for a day and night but there will definately be another return visit to Ely

We loved the cathedral, which was at its most mystical when we visited in December. We attended two fantastic events in the cathedral during our stay – but needed a mulled wine afterwards to warm us up!
Another high point was the Farmers' market, which had all sorts of tempting foodstuffs on offer.

One of the most magnificent cathedrals in Europe, which sits in most beautiful parkland, at the centre of a bustling, prosperous, quirky small town on a major river in the heart of the fascinating Fenlands of England

Loved the cathedral and the purpose of the visit was to see a performance of Dickens “A Christmas Carol” in the evening at the cathedral. A lovely way to start Christmas. A very good production of professional actors. Also went to the market and High Street and Oliver Cromwell’s house. All very interesting and enjoyable. Great pubs, good beer and food within walking distance.

Beautiful town, great variety of small shops.
Beautiful town, great variety of small shops. Very pretty down near the river with the canal boats. Stopped off in the morning at the Almonry Tea Rooms right next to the Cathedral, for great cheese scone and coffee. Great photos to be had of the cathedral from the gardens at the back of Tea Rooms. Had a tasty carvery at the Riverside Bar and Kitchen overlooking the river. Every where very well signposted. Found our way easily to the railway station, when we travelled to Cambridge for the day.
Lovely walk through Cherry Hill Park on the way. Sun shining on Cathedral made great photos! A little bit sad that they charged £10 to get into the cathedral. I think a voluntary donation would have been more appropriate to make a magnificent building accessible to all in these tough times.

We were staying as my Wife was selling her beanie hats at the Cathedral Christmas Market (15-18 November 2023).
Ely is lovely, lots to see and do. Like many older places parking can be tight and there were lots of people around.
Very friendly and warm locals, good customer service in pubs and cafes.
Honestly, do yourself a favour and try the pub across the road that doubles up as a hotel. Our trip was very short notice and we booked Ely GH the day before, but we were disappointed to find that double rooms are priced way cheaper at the Pub and they also do a fantastic Sunday roast. I always read reviews before booking but let my guard down here, never again. It was probably one of the worse places I have ever stayed in my life and I’m not young.
BTW, I gave £110, where is my change?
The Boathouse is maintained immaculately and it even has a large private garden as a bonus. The hosts provide all essentials including a bottle of milk, tea/coffee, jams, microwave, iron etc. The property is larger than the photographs portray and is stylishly presented providing for a relaxing and homely stay. A car is essential as the property is in a countryside location. I would definitely recommend this property especially if you are looking for somewhere to relax in peace and quiet.
- very calm and quiet rural area
- private parking next to the house (door to door)
- modern, homely and warm house with live TV
- fully equipped kitchen: table, chairs, cooker, microwave, kettle, fridge, pans, plates, mugs, cutlery etc. - more than I have ;-)
- fresh milk, croissants, biscuits and chocolates + coffee/tea/sugar
- comfortable bed
- towels provided
- friendly owners
For me, the star feature of this hotel was the staff - all of whom were very friendly and helpful. And, as my reason for visiting Ely was to attend an event at the Cathedral, the location could not have been more convenient - it's two minutes walk away. The bed was comfortable. At dinner, I enjoyed the creme brulee dessert.
We've all stayed at the Nyton before, this was the first time we've stayed as a group. As usual we couldn't fault our stay, rooms (and all areas of the hotel we saw) were clean and comfortable and the breakfast set us all up for the day! Staff were friendly and professional, we'll definitely be back!
Lovely hotel, staff were so friendly and helpful, room was spotless and air conditioning made it even better. I can honestly say its the best breakfast I've had. Location was perfect the river was 5 minutes walk away and the town centre 5 minutes the other way. Will definitely be returning.
Room was well equipped and comfortable. Lovely view over the river. Particularly excellent breakfast. Dinner was good but a little limited if staying more than a couple of nights. Fresh vegetable was cabbage every night, fortunately I like cabbage.Staff were helpful and cheerful.
Fantastic breakfast, delicious fruit and pastries, lovely cooked breakfast very tasty. Lovely coffee Nespresso machine. Lovely staff very attentive. Hotel was only minutes away from Ely centre but well away from any noise from Traffic. Beautiful gardens and house.
A beautiful well maintained property is a lovely setting. Our bedroom was large and very comfortable with a very clean modern en-suite. Breakfast was good. The entire property was equivalent to a four star hotel.
A very well appointed house close to the centre of Ely ahd handy for a Cambridge visit. Excellent pub behind the property for food. Recommend the micro-pub towards the bottom of the High Street.
Quaint old building with easy access to the town of Ely. Housekeeper Jose is amazing! Robert is great! Cooked a full English breakfast for us! Luggage stored for the day too!
Host allowed us in early which was very kind as we had bags and only 1 days to see all the wonderful sights of Ely. The location was excellent right in the centre of Ely.
Superb room, friendly welcome, lovely and quiet at night, delicious breakfast with loads of choice, and excellent location in the city Centre with free parking
Everything was so nice and the property was incredible. Lovely views of the cathedral. It was more than we expected for the same cost as a lesser hotel!
