During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) established several plantations and built a road linking to the capital, becoming the base for future expansions. Even though World War II stopped the Dutch attempt to move the colonial capital to Bandung, buildings like the magnificent ‘Gedung Sate’ remain witnesses of such enterprise. Other must-see landmarks are the ‘Gedung Merdeka’ and the Bandung Institut of Technology. Jalan Asia-Afrika street is still one of the main roads, and remains a popular area to find hotels in Bandung.
