The Zollverein Mine, Unesco Heritage, worths the visit. I was there on business, but I had a great time visiting the several parks built where once there were mines or steel usines. It is a diverse city, very green. Not the very turistical place, though.

The staff were exceptionally polite and friendly and spoke very good English. As a wheelchair user all aspects of my needs were catered for ie: automatic doors. The bathroom is also very clean and functional. There are also washing machines in the basement (which we didn’t use). It takes about 2 minutes to get to a supermarket and 5 minutes to the railway station. There is also a tram station nearby that gets you right to the Veltins Arena and Essen.

The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. We arrived later than expected due to traffic and we were still able to order dinner although the restaurant was about to close (I’d recommend the lasagne) Both the hotel and restaurant are dog friendly. The location is perfect. Less than 10 min walk to a small park are.
